Allen and Rhonda Sanders love living in East Texas. Married for 42 years with 2 incredible daughters and 6 grandkids, we're still crazy in love with each other and love to see families slow down and reconnect with each other and sometimes that means getting out of town and getting away from it all. Technically, we're 'retired', but stay busy with our 3 vacation rentals - but it really is a labor of love. We love opening our hearts and homes to folks who need to just need to chill for a while. In her spare time, Rhonda enjoys all kinds of crafts, quilting and almost anything creative. Allen enjoys fishing and riding his Harley. They are both very active in leadership in their local church.
Allen/Rhonda Sanders purchased this chalet in 2006
We actually bought this home for our daughter and her 3 children, who recently moved away to Colorado. We loved the house so decided to make it a vacation rental.
Fabulous, there were 20 of us, all in our 60's 1965 graduates. So relaxing, everyone did their own thing, rested, read, watched movies, went shopping in Mineola - we cooked, played Bunco, had movie night, just thoroughly enjoyed bing there. Rooms pretty, beds comfortable, huge pantry. Trundle bed and full bathroom downstairs for those who can't tackle stairs. Mr Sanders was very helpful and close if we needed anything. A GREAT place.
The house worked very well for vacationing with our adult children, our six young children, and my elderly mother during the week of Thanksgiving. Just behind the backyard is a fun trail that leads to a great park with two playgrounds, a boating area, shuffle board, disc golf course, etc. As for the house, the open den and kitchen area accommodated us well for eating and socializing. Young children, of course, have to be watched carefully if they are near the staircase leading to the bedrooms. There are a few updates that would make the stay even more enjoyable, but the Sanders proved to be wonderful renters who were very responsive and helpful! We had a great time!
This is a great place to get away from it all. You can wifi but no cell phone service. I recommend that you bring any food that you may want for the visit. Also, this is more of a summer retreat if you are looking for activities outside the home. The house was clean with large bedrooms and adequate baths. The central heat was great as the nights were cold. There was a large wood heater but we decided to not to use it because of the young children. We did enjoy the Barbecue located down the road. My wife was surprised that she was required to clean the house and put the garbage on the street then charged a 100 dollar cleaning fee. I would recommend the residence to my family. The owner was cooperative and always answered my calls and questions.
House was wonderful for a large gathering. Fully equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay. Well maintain and clean. The only negative is it is not handicapped friendly. The drive way has such a large sloop getting into the house, makes it extremely dangers for our senior and handicapped quest in our party (5 people out of 19). Limited sleeping space down stairs for our Senior guest. Upstairs bed rooms plenty of space, just our quest could not get up the stairs very well. All this said, I would strongly recommend this home as a wonderful home away from home
I live here in Holly Lake Ranch so I knew this was the perfect place for our celebration! We have 12 ladies 65 plus, a few with disabilities and this home worked perfectly for everyone. Plenty of room for everyone! Coffee on the deck, games and just enjoying the beauty of the area. We enjoyed the afternoon at Lake Hawkins, A Taste of Italy, great lunch and then wine on the deck. We hope for a return in the spring!
Our stay at the Holly Lake Retreat was fantastic! My parents were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and many of us had to travel from out of state to the ceremony. The house was perfect for two of the families to stay. With four bedrooms and tons of beds, it was easy for the 13 of us to find a place to crash. And with 3 bathrooms and showers, we didn't have to wait in line.
The spacious living room allowed us to spread out and relax in front of the wood stove and watch TV or talk the night away.
The pool table was an instant hit with the kids as they practiced their shooting ability (or lack thereof) at all hours of the day and night. And with the wifi, they were able to get their daily dose of internet and keep them out of the adults' hair.
The well-equipped kitchen was excellent for cooking regular meals or just popping snacks into the microwave. And the outdoor grill helped to provide some variety in the cooking. We were able to save money on food, but still enjoy home cooking.
The biggest complaint - that we had to leave. After staying several days, the kids would have definitely called that place home if we gave them the chance.
I would definitely recommend this home for anyone who is planning on staying in the Hawkins area for a few days. But, be sure to stay for a while and enjoy the place. Otherwise you'd be missing out.
Thanks again Allen and Rhonda for opening your place to us. We hope to be back there again soon!
