Highlands Cabin Rental Photos and Description
2 Bedroom, 2 BA Cabin, Sleeper-Sofa; Secluded, 5 Minutes to Downtown Highlands
Your own tranquil Treehouse is secluded on 2.5 acres of mountain laurel and hardwoods only 3 miles from downtown Highlands. The charm here is magical for a perfect romantic getaway or to just get away. Authors have written books here. It is the perfect place from which to hike nearby Whiteside Mountain or enjoy the waterfalls, trout streams, restaurants, shopping and seasonal festivals, concerts and theatre of the Highlands region.
When you first arrive, you will enter the Treehouse from the long, high back porch running the width of the house with its swing, recliners and rockers overlooking wooded grandeur as the land falls away beneath you. You will enter the Great Room with its 20-foot high cathedral ceiling that gives a wonderful feeling of spaciousness and windows that let in an abundance of natural light and the forest outside. You will view the beautiful dining and living room areas, the rock fireplace, the entertainment center with wireless Internet and Direct TV and a very comfortable sleeper sofa in front of a unique coffee table filled with information on things to see and do. You will be standing on thick hardwood floors that run throughout the house.
As you walk toward the front door and front porch, you will notice the dark granite counters and wood cabinets in the full kitchen. On the front porch, you will see the Weber grill, firewood and a swing. (The front porch is close to the ground and best for off-loading luggage and groceries.)
Walk toward the back door and you can turn into the master bedroom with its comfy, king size bed and full bath. All linens and towels are provided and the beds will be made when you arrive. Go back to the Great Room and you can go up the stairs to the high, open loft bedroom with its queen size, sleigh bed, writing desk, full bath with shower, double closets and dark wood furniture and desk. On the way up or once there, you may notice the window at the apex of the cathedral ceiling that lets in natural light, making the loft bedroom light and airy.
The Treehouse is fully furnished. Free long distance calling in the United States on a land line is provided. (Mobile reception in the mountains can be spotty.)
Day or evening, you may want to swing or rock on the back porch. Enjoy a beverage and the ultimate peace and tranquility of deliciously cool days and crisp nights of summer and early fall. In the late fall and winter months, a warm and cozy fire in the rock fireplace will beckon.
Highlands and Cashiers have incredible restaurants, unique shops, golf, hiking, waterfalls, and trout streams, all nearby. The hiking trails and the many waterfalls have beautiful views. In the winter, skiing in Sapphire Valley is 20-25 minutes away.
For me, being in the Treehouse and Highlands is a transcendent experience. All the problems and worries of everyday life seem to fall away to the valleys below. I hope you can share that Treehouse experience with me.

About The Owner
I am a professional in Houston, TX who grew up and attended college in Georgia. I miss the mountains and woodlands of the east coast. I am close to retirement and bought the Treehouse both as a place to get away and as an investment. My wife is a yoga teacher. I am a former Marine officer, a partner in a professional firm and do some acting in film. I have a wonderful housekeeper who has immaculately maintained the Treehouse for number of years and people in Highlands who look after the building and the grounds.
Why The Owner chose Highlands
I was on vacation in Sapphire Valley and fell in love with both Highlands and the Treehouse. Something about the topography, the waterfalls and the town, as well as the Treehouse itself, is unique. The feeling in the Treehouse with its huge back porch that runs the width of the house and overlooks hardwoods, mountain laurel and blackberries is indescribable.
I have learned that Highlands attracts a very high quality group of people both as renters and owners and is brimming with fine restaurants, shopping and live theater and concerts in the summer, both in town and nearby. The fall provides many great events and festivals in the area. Also, being on 2.53 acres of mountain laurel and hardwoods, the Treehouse is secluded but is only about 3 miles and five minutes from downtown Highlands. This combination was very appealing. It is also within walking distance of Whiteside Mountain with its beautiful hiking trails and views, including the Shadow Bear. There is easy access to many wonders of nature, Cashiers and Sapphire Valley in addition to Highlands.
The Treehouse was built around 2001 and is of high quality construction with wonderful amenities: central air and heat, a beautiful fireplace, thick hardwood floors and granite counters in the kitchen. There are two large porches on the front and back of the house that run the width of the house. In warm and cool weather, one could spend most of one's time on the swings or rockers on the back porch where the ground falls away into the forest, giving a great view and a feeling of peace.
What makes this cabin unique
What made me fall in love with the Treehouse was the utter tranquility of the place. From the 20-foot high cathedral ceiling in the Great Room to being surrounded by hardwoods and mountain laurel, to sitting on the high back porch in one of the rockers or the swing viewing the land and forest falling away beneath you , there is a feeling that whatever you are looking for, you have found it. It is very attractive that it is so close to the activities and restaurants in Highlands and Cashiers - five minutes in one direction and 15 in the other. The 20-25 minutes drive to skiing in Sapphire Valley is also attractive. Photographs cannot truly capture the charm of the place and upon going back to close the sale two months after making an offer, it was even more charming than I remembered. It did not hurt that I drove from a stifling July summer in Durham to the delicious coolness of Highlands in the course of a day. The Treehouse is also extremely well-built and seemed solid in its construction with its 6' walls. It still does.
