Bergerac on the River Dordogne, is a 20 minute cross-country drive and has a huge range of shops and L'Imparfait is one of the best restaurants in the region. The cobbled quays beside the river were once used for loading wine casks onto sailing barques for their journey downstream to Bordeaux, behind which are beautiful narrow streets and ancient houses.
The vineyards of the Bergerac area, which produce both excellent white and red wines, are close to the town and include the well-known sweet white wine of Monbazillac, akin to Sauterne, so there are lots of opportunities to taste. St Emilion is 45 minutes drive.
Other lovely villages, such as Issigeac and Monpazier, with their arcaded market squares and old fortified village "bastides" such as Domme, perch spectacularly on the limestone cliffs overlooking the river, the old town of Sarlat, the famous caves at Les Eyzies and their prehistoric paintings, and the spectacular river panorama at Beynac, are all about 30 minutes to an hour’s drive away. Périgueux, the ancient capital, is 30 minutes drive.
