Your hosts, the McKusick Family.
Your hosts, Sarah and Mark
We have lived in the area since 1980 and run a farm down the road where we raise goats and manage a small herd of horses. Our three daughters are recently now 'out of the nest' either in college or working. Mark is currently farming full time, spending any free time clearing trails and maintaining the old ones. Sarah is getting back into her photography, and trying her hand at travel writing whenever they get away on adventures, which happen annually.
Mark or Sarah purchased this farmhouse in 1998
'We live in Paradise' is a recent phrase coined by a local friend of ours. No matter where we travel, we always love coming home to these old hills covered in a blend of hardwood and pine forests, just out of the way of development and the clamour of too many people! We are surrounded by Nature and the wildlife that flourish here.
We searched and searched for a place to stay for the Thanksgiving holiday until we found this idyllic home. It meant so much to us to be able to have an experience as close to home as possible since we were having our boys stay in the area while at school, instead of making the trek back to Ca. Mark and Sarah made all of our requests come true. The kitchen was well equiped for the big meal; there was plenty of firewood for the 4 days; the hot tub was awesome, even in the falling snow; the grounds around the home were perfect for light hikes and exploring. My greatest pleasure was being outside and hearing nothing but the sound of the breeze through the trees. In short, it was all that we hoped for.
High Pocket is the perfect destination if you are looking to stay in a place far from the madding crowd.
We've been spending a week here each summer for years. We enjoy the country roads and trails for long walks with fabulous views. I like to observe the goats, especially if the herd includes kids. If we need a diversion, we head into Shelburne Falls or drive to Northampton. Our daughters have on occasion gone to Six Flags for the day.
The kitchen is well equipped, and there's nothing better than a barbecue, a glass of wine, and sitting out on the deck.
The bedrooms are spacious, each with a full bath. Sarah always has fresh flowers on the dining room table, and rainy days find us in the big living room, reading a book.
Thanks Mark and Sarah for making us so comfortable with such last minute arrangements. We are so happy that we landed at your house rather than Lake George. Our 3 adults and 2 kids (3, 7) were very comfortable and I particularly enjoyed the barred owl serenade in the hot tub. It was fun to be able to meet you and enjoy your breakfast, but also pleasant to feel alone after that. The kids had fun with your ping pong game room and the tether ball. All in all, I suspect we will be back when visiting family in Greenfield and Amherst, and we look forward to it!
High Pockets is a warm, comfortable, gorgeous farm with panoramic views perfect for relaxing. The meals are always delicious and Mark and Sarah's hospitality thoughtful and gracious. This has been about the fifth time for me. It is wonderful for our families reunions. The surronding towns activities and shopping provide plenty to do and see like ziplining, yoga, etc... The horseback riding has always been enjoyable and the mounts are superb. Love this place and would highly reccomend it.
This has been a perfect place for my daughter and I to meet to relax and enjoy special times together. She can ride one of several trail horses while I ride my own. The trails are beautiful and the panoramic mountain views are spectacular. it's peaceful and comfortable with all the amenities anyone could need. My horse back riding friends and I also come here for our girls get-a-ways. The home cooked breakfasts and warm hospitality have kept me coming back two to three times a year. The hot tub and swedish massages are an indulgent ending to our visits. I cherish every moment I'm here.
We (a group of 6 of us) rented this great farm house for a fabulous fall weekend. The house is perfect for a group - it's a B&B, so each of the 3 rooms has its own bathroom (there's also a small 4th room without its own bathroom), and the living / dining / kitchen areas are beautiful and comfortable. There are no neighbors in sight and hiking / riding trails leave right from the back of the property, so once we arrived we stayed put for the whole weekend and just explored the grounds, cooked, enjoyed the hot tub and fireplace, and generally relaxed. There are horses here but we chose not to ride - we definitely will next time! Mark was great - answered questions, came by to welcome us, and was around and available, but not over-bearing at all. Great place for a super relaxing and quaint weekend. We will definitely be coming back!
