Location: Bahías de Huatulco, State of Oaxaca, on the Mexican Southern Pacific Coast, in southeast Mexico (20 min from Huatulco International Airport) Huatulco was Mexico’s main port and gate to South America since 1620, before Acapulco usurped that fame in a later century.
Staying in Santa Cruz means being close to all vibrant areas, Arts and Craft markets and the Santa Cruz Park Café (which plays classical music and sells coffee from the region), the Santa Cruz Marina, 1 block away, where one can charter fishing boats or diving excursions, Chahue Beach with the new modern marina is a 15 minute walk away, La Crucecita (the downtown) with it’s beauteous cathedral (Guinness Book of Records recognizes the ceiling painting of the Virgin Guadalupe, highly worshiped in Mexico, painted by local artist Jose Luis “Pepe” DelSigno) and the Zoccalò (Main Plaza), with the numerous shops and restaurants, are all 20 minutes walking distance, and most of the banks are 3 minutes away from Ocean Park Condominiums.
Numerous (Mom & Pop style) grocery stores and souvenir shops are just a few steps away. Santa Cruz is the oldest bay, where its harbor superseded the original fisherman’s village and all the other Bays in this 9 bay system can be easily reached by a short taxi ride or leisurely boat ride. The Chapel of Santa Cruz has its own story to tell.
Why Huatulco? In addition to the benevolent nature of the local people, this resort remains a pristine and barely discovered Touristic Destination, developed by Fonatur, Mexico’s government real estate developer. Integral in the Huatulco Bays, land and sea are part of the National Park of Hautulco. The preservation of the flora and fauna and weaving it in with eco tourism is the major focus of this wondrous place, one of the rare semi-tropical rain forests to be found worldwide. Diverse species of plants and animals found nowhere else on this planet make Huatulco their home.
The Deltas of the Coyul and Copalita Rivers, enveloping the Huatulco Bays, lend a unique culmination of salt and sweet water, resulting in a fascinating impact on this semi dry rain forest with it’s wide variety of fish, insects, birds, reptiles, mammals and plants. (These wetlands are declared RAMSAR sites, sites of international importance for protection.) You will hear and read the expression Mexico’s best kept secret referring to Huatulco (wa-tool-co) a word from the Nahuatl language, which means who adores the woods.
We visited Huatulco for new years and we had a wonderful time. To stay at Ocean Park was the best choice, nice comfy condos with all you may need, the pool was great for our little girl and the beach was just a few steps away. Kitchen is fully equipped but we only used it 1/2 the time, cause since we were on vacations we also wanted to enjoy all the restaurants that are no more than a couple of meters away and for desert we had fruit Popsicle's from the "paletas" guy. It was just a perfect!!! We will for sure try to escape to Ocean Park on the next holidays!!!
