Numerous (Mom & Pop style) grocery stores and souvenir shops are just a few steps away. Santa Cruz is the oldest bay, where its harbor superseded the original fisherman’s village and all the other Bays in this 9 bay system can be easily reached by a short taxi ride or leisurely boat ride. The Chapel of Santa Cruz has its own story to tell.
Why Huatulco? In addition to the benevolent nature of the local people, this resort remains a pristine and barely discovered Touristic Destination, developed by Fonatur, Mexico’s government real estate developer. Integral in the Huatulco Bays, land and sea are part of the National Park of Hautulco. The preservation of the flora and fauna and weaving it in with eco tourism is the major focus of this wondrous place, one of the rare semi-tropical rain forests to be found worldwide. Diverse species of plants and animals found nowhere else on this planet make Huatulco their home.
The Deltas of the Coyul and Copalita Rivers, enveloping the Huatulco Bays, lend a unique culmination of salt and sweet water, resulting in a fascinating impact on this semi dry rain forest with it’s wide variety of fish, insects, birds, reptiles, mammals and plants. (These wetlands are declared RAMSAR sites, sites of international importance for protection.) You will hear and read the expression Mexico’s best kept secret referring to Huatulco (wa-tool-co) a word from the Nahuatl language, which means who adores the woods.
