GROTTO BAY -- AFFORDABLE LUXURY WITH A PRIVATE BEACH

Long Island Studio Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms; sleeps 4

This exotic island getaway overlooking Salt Pond's Regatta course sits at the edge of a serene cove with views of fishing vessels and uninhabited offshore islands.

Guests of our two studio units (each sleeping 2) are only steps away from their own private sandy beach where they can swim, snorkel, kayak, paddle board and even fish at their leisure. A regulation horseshoe pit is on the beach, as well as beach palapas for shade and hammocks for relaxing. Turtles reside just offshore, and a little cay is within easy kayaking distance and great for bonefishing. Sunsets are magnificent!

Our new open-air kitchen is now available exclusively for our guests and is fully equipped for easy meals or snacks. We provide all the essentials, including coolers for your picnics. A grocery store, liquor store and restaurants are less than a mile away.

Beneath the property's tropical gardens of banana, avocado, papaya and citrus trees, lies a three-chambered cave system with five species of bats and still-forming stalactites and stalagmites.

Grotto Bay's owners, Kris Newman and Jean Pierce (PADI-certified instructor and divemaster), can set up diving guides and also provide snorkeling equipment.

Every visit receives personalized attention to ensure the best vacation possible. Both the Turtle Room and the Triggerfish Room have ocean views, high-quality linens, air-conditioning and ceiling fans. The fully-equipped guest kitchen is adjacent to the guest units.

Ocean kayaks, both single and double, are available for guests at any time, as are some new paddle boards! A couple of uninhabited offshore cays are within easy kayaking or paddle-boarding distance.

We will provide snorkeling equipment, and there is nice snorkeling right off of our own beach. A family of turtles can frequently be seen and dolphins also visit occasionally.

We provide beach towels, coolers for your island touring, and complimentary shorty wetsuits if the water is chilly. Fishing handlines, hooks, sinkers and bait are also complimentary. Throw out a line, hook your fish, then throw it right on our beach barbecue -- yum!

We provide a complete restaurant list, suggestions for island touring, maps, etc., and we can arrange a rental car to be waiting at the airport. We can also arrange for scuba diving and fishing excursions.

Grotto Bay is located on the calm side of the island, which is perfect for all sorts of water sports. However, those so inclined can trek less than a mile to see waves crashing on the other side of the island! Restaurants and grocery stores are within very easy walking distance. Long Island's annual Regatta (the first weekend in June) takes place literally off of Grotto Bay's beach.

Beautiful and private getaway

  • 5 of 5
For our honeymoon, we sought a destination that was private, beautiful, and had areas to explore. Long Island was definitely all three! Jeanie was a helpful and kind host. She provided advice and a list of all the best places to visit on the island. Grotto Bay itself is quiet and enjoyable. We happily cooked breakfast every morning in the outdoor kitchen... we had fun paddle-boating and kayaking (Jeanie's provides very nice equipment) and throwing horseshoes right on the beach just steps from our room. From what we saw during our week stay, we believe Grotto Bay is the best place to stay on Long Island for couples (rooms only have one bed).

We could not have asked for a better experience at Grotto Bay! Jean and Kris were amazing hosts and people. The property itself is beyond beautiful and is equipped with everything you need and more! Having access to paddle boards, kayaks, snorkeling gear, and your own private beach was truly unbeatable. If you are looking for an authentic bohemian experience away from the touristy areas this is definitely the spot. The property and the island have a great low-key vibe. Jean and Kris are great about telling you the best places to go and see. They also just recently built an awesome fire pit that is handmade from local stone and serves as a great grill! I know we will now never stay anywhere else and are looking forward to get back as soon as possible!

another serene vacation

  • 5 of 5
Jean & Kris, thank you for another serene vacation.
What could be better than dry (for Bahamas) 80is. You are on the deck; the water splashes 10 yards away; 6 pack is by; a spy novel in your hands; I supplement Billie Holiday quite tune on my iTune. Don’t miss the green ray from the sunset on the top deck.
There are miles of hiking of deserted beaches like from the Planets of the Apes. Go lazy canoeing throw the keys (complements of Kris) or snorkeling (complementary of the same) .

Tranquil, beautiful, perfect, want to go back soon

  • 5 of 5
Wow, wow, wow. We loved it. Lovely room, nice kitchen next to the rooms outside under the roof. A great extra to just having a room. Microwave in the room as well though and fridge with a bigger fridge outside in the kitchen too. Also a safe in the room and wifi. Shops nearby and petrol station too. The property is very private. The beach is really just for the 2 rooms so even when full probaly only 4 or 5 of you max. Its a small beach with lovely sand, plenty of chairs and a lovely big straw and wood type shade umbrella with built-in wooden table around the middle of it. I spent time just sat there with the great view and a cocktail ( self made in the kitchen )
The water is great, there is a small pebble line at the base of the beach as you walk into the water but that is no problem to get past and only at low tide. There is some snorkelling around some rocks immediately as you get in the water which was fantastic for training my 7 year old daughter to snorkel with confidence. The deck area around the 2 rooms is one of the nicest deck areas I have ever seen and it is in the shade so it is perfect for relaxing if you do not want to be in the beach sun ( 10 metres from beach only ) The area around the deck to the drive and to the beach is very nicely planted. There is a cave about 30 metres away which is really exciting, I only went a third of the way in as the bats where active although harmless. I guess it is a hundred metres or so deep or maybe much more?
The owners Jean and Kris where the perfect hosts. They checked on us in the morning and the pm to see if we wanted anything, they put together a great info pack in the rooms with restaurant, beach info, all tel numbers you may want. Great info and directions for all things.
If you take the time to speak to them you will find out that they are so nice, completely customer dedicated and so interesting. They have such great stories if you are interested. We spent the last 3 days of December and the 1st and 2nd of January there. New years eve next door in a fantastic restaurant called Island breeze ( approx 400 metres away ) and then on the beach before midnight to see a few fireworks. It is a dream place and myself, my wife and daughter came away from our holiday including staying at a total of 4 hotels in the Bahamas wishing we could buy this place and go there all time. The beaches on this island are a dream by the way.
Such a shame that as we live in Vienna we need 2 days to get there.

Owner's Response: Thanks, John, for your really nice review. We love the way you and your family embraced the island, appreciating the people, the culture and our beautiful natural environment. So different from Vienna, Austria, but you seemed to fit right in! You made it easy for us to want to make your holiday as nice as we possibly could.

Can't wait to go back!

Can't wait to go back!

We recently returned from a week at Grotto Bay and it exceeded our expectations in every way - great accommodations, ideal location for exploring, private beach and recreation right at your front door, and everything you need nearby.

This was our first trip to the Bahamas and my main goal was to find some self-guided/do-it-yourself bonefishing. We booked a day with a local fishing guide on our own before heading down to the Bahamas, but the owners can arrange one for you too. After this we fished on our own and found great flats within an easy five minute kayak paddle from Grotto Bay. There's another accessible flat a five minute drive away (the owners have our notes and maps) and we saw enough fish on these two nearby spots to keep us busy. There are many other accessible flats on the island too, but we ran out of time to fish them all.

Grotto Bay itself is about 100 yards off the main “highway” – it’s convenient to two grocery stores, liquor store, gas station, etc. (all less than a mile away), and yet the lodging is on a quiet and peaceful waterfront that feels remote and private. The accommodations are clean, comfortable, and well maintained. The full outdoor kitchen had everything we could need so it was perfect for self-catering. The nearby grocery stores are small but fully stocked with everything from meat and vegetables to sunblock and shampoo. Prices were comparable to those in a large U.S. metropolitan area with the exception of beer, which was about double what we normally pay, but it's good!

The beach out front is great for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying a drink under the palapa. The owners provide high quality water toys (stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, and snorkeling gear). We also explored the length of the island by car and found the location to be perfectly situated so everything is a reasonable drive.

I can’t say enough about how welcoming and helpful the owners of Grotto Bay are. They helped us make car arrangements in advance, and were always willing to answer questions or provide directions to beaches, restaurants, and attractions on the island. Any time we needed anything (cooler, fish for dinner, flashlights to explore the cave), they were extremely accommodating.

We spent a week there and it wasn’t nearly enough time to explore this beautiful island. Frankly, you could spend a week right on the grounds of Grotto Bay and have a wonderful time. We are already planning our next trip, and will definitely stay there again.

Best Vacation Ever

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at Grotto Bay for almost a week and had an amazing time exploring the island. Jean and Kris are very helpful and gave us great advice on places to explore and things to do, and even provided us with snorkeling gear and kayaks to explore with. The rooms are very nice and clean and look out right over the water, we woke up every morning and walked down the front steps and had breakfast and coffee on the beach. Cooked food on the grill or in the outdoor kitchen and watched the sunset in the afternoon. There is so much to do and see on this island. If you're looking to get away from the resorts and tourist attractions and really relax this is the place to go. Some of the places that we really enjoyed: Deans Blue Hole, Gordon's Beach, Seaside Village, Bonnacord Beach... Kris and Jean also set us up with a local fisherman/tour guide named Locksley who brought us to some great beaches and fishing spots, it was a lot of fun and we would highly recommend it. We would definitely come back to Grotto Bay again, couldn't ask for a better vacation.

Grotto Bay is on the calm side of the island, facing west -- perfect for boating, snorkeling & swimming. Sunsets are sensational! It takes only a few minutes for visitors to hop over to the opposite side of the island where the wind blows & waves crash.

Anglers can kayak out to nearby uninhabited cays and cast a line to fighting bonefish or bring something tasty back to throw on the grill. A beachfront fire pit is perfect for socializing and cooking your catch!

Although very secluded and serene, Grotto Bay is within easy walking distance to restaurants and the best grocery stores on the island.

Grotto Bay is the primo spot for watching the Long Island Regatta (every June). The races start right off of our own beach. Just grab a beach chair, a pair of binoculars and a libation & you'll have the best seat on the island. An unusual feature on the property is the 3-chambered Salt Pond Cave, one of the largest in the Bahamas, featuring beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.
