Photos and Description of the Gearhart vacation house rental
House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Deer Hollow is a three bedroom, two bath coastal home on a quiet cul de sac in one of the more laid-back & least commercialized Oregon communities with a spectacular beach and an historic golf course.

The house is freshly furnished in a sophisticated and eclectic style, a warmly comfortable and welcoming fashion that feels much more Portland than Provincetown, more Oregon than Oahu.

It's a coastal home for grownups rather than a cool beach cottage for kids. The furniture and appointments throughout are an eclectic mix of old and new, antique and modern, fine art and fun- chosen to encourage lounging, and lazing around. It's a kind of quiet sanctuary that's great to come back to after a busy day in the surrounding area... or to choose instead of a busy day.

And it's in a great neighborhood, only a block from the eastern edge of the historic Gearhart Golf Links and an easy walk to the beach.

Gearhart...: Gearhart is one of the more laid-back & least commercialized Oregon communities boasting a spectacular stretch of beach. But that's only one of the assets that led Travel & Leisure magazine to name it 'one of America's best little beach towns.' The 'city center' covers all of two blocks but it includes a charming bistro/cafe, one of the better bakeries on the North Coast, a freshly upscale and fairly sophisticated market, a couple of gift shops, and a glorious source of locally made fudge and saltwater taffy. Just a little bit northwest, the access road to Gearhart's amazing beach (on which you can drive) is just across the street from the clubhouse for the town's historic and beautiful 18 hole links. In the other direction is Highway 101 with the town's liquor store, a pretty good Asian restaurant, a very good American diner/cafe, and one of the most fun and an affordable antique/collectible/decorator shops that we never pass up the chance to visit.

Nearby Attractions...: Within a few miles of Gearhart, visitors will find a wide range of potential entertainments. About 8 miles south, the village of Cannon Beach is a busy treasure trove of art galleries, boutiques, and good restaurants. It's also the gateway to Ecola State Park with some of the more spectacular views to be found on the North Coast. Immediately south of us is the even busier quintessential seaside resort town of Seaside which is hugely popular with young people. North of us, is the Old Fort Stevens Park, a remarkable chain/complex of sites on a peninsula that offers beach access on both the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean. Ten minutes north of that is the historic City of Astoria, blessed with an abundance of antique shops and art galleries and not a few good dining spots. Further north, across the spectacular bridge, guests have access to Washington's Long Beach Peninsula with some of the best oyster beds in the world, lots of beautiful parks and marinas, and excellent bird-watching

Owners may come and go...: Guests should be aware that the owners keep an apartment with a separate entrance above the garage and may come and go at reasonable hours and times. They will make every possible and reasonable effort not to intrude or impact on the privacy or pleasure of their guests.

About Larry McDonald

We're a married couple (in California, anyway) who've traveled together from Italy to Indonesia over the past 36 years. At every opportunity we've stayed in vacation rentals - homes, condos, and apartments- to feel more like residents than tourists. We've put everything we learned (and a lot of what we bought) into this house because we want our guests to enjoy their stay here the way we enjoyed the best of our travel experiences.

Larry McDonald purchased this house in 2010
Why Larry McDonald chose Gearhart

Long before we could afford to buy a vacation property we would drive out to Gearhart from Portland for the day. Turning the dogs loose on the beach for hours, exploring the amazing Ft. Stevens State Park a few miles north and the antique shops here and in Astoria. When we came into some money in 2010, the first thing we did was buy and furnish this house. And we've lavished a load of love on furnishing and maintaining it.

Excellent birding in spring and fall; Elk wander through the yard in season and deer are here year round. Wonderful and easily accessible state and national parks and recreation areas, including the Lewis & Clark National Historical Park to the north and Ecola State Park, one of Oregon's most spectacular, to the south.

Deep sea fishing out of Astoria, clamming on the nearby beaches in season. An exciting zipline adventure nearby.

Real fun for foodies. Access to amazing fresh seafood plus lots of regionally grown produce at the Astoria Farmers' Market. Some seriously good and innovative restaurants here, in Seaside, in Cannon Beach and in Astoria.

Antique shopping is a primary activity for lots of visitors to the area for very good reason.

Notes: One of the owners is a talented cook who has worked professional hotel kitchens. He's furnished the kitchen with everything he'd want in a vacation rental, including basic spices, teas, and (for rentals of a week or more) a pretty well-stocked pantry. Guests will find a welcome package of chips & nuts, soft drinks, and beer & wine. We're also proud of the expanding book, CD, and DVD libraries in the house including those of interest to kids. We do allow kids but we want guests to be aware that it is not an especially kid-friendly house since there are a number of places where a normally inquisitive 2-4 year old could get into trouble. That said, we've had several guests with small kids who had a great time with no problems Both TVs are served by DIRECTV with about 80 interesting channels available (and many more less interesting). The living room 42' is HD. We do NOT allow pets other than dogs.

Great Vacation in a Lovely Home

5 of 5
Submitted: September 17, 2012 Stayed: August 2012
Well, I don't know where to begin because everything was perfect. It was in a great location. It was close to the Beach and to the Village. The owners have put a lot of energy and personal touches into making this a lovely home. Each room had its own feel to it and the decorating was superb. The kitchen was truly a gourmet kitchen and had everything one could ask for. The pots and pans were of great quality. You could fix a Thanksgiving dinner and not need a thing. The house was immaculate. The owner could not have been more helpful and accommodating. It is truly a pet friendly home and our Border Collie immediately found her doggie bed. We would definitely recommend this to our friends and family, but we would get first dibs on it. We even saw a family of deer browse through the yard a few times. We will definitely be back.
Now really what more could any ask for!!
Owner's Response: And we could not have asked for better guests. Thank you... we look forward to your return and, yes, you do get dibs.

What a great trip & house!

What a great trip & house!
Submitted: September 14, 2012 Stayed: August 2012
What a great trip & house! Our English Bulldogs (Bentley & Bluto) had a great time sunbathing and enjoying the beach! This was the perfect house for our special weekend. We were able to prepare for our wedding here and hold a lovely brunch for the out-of-state guests, who all loved the home. You two have thought of everything! The welcome email, the welcome book, & tomato juice. (Thankfully we didn't have to use it :-).) Your house is beautiful, as is Gearhart. You have a gem here! We hope to return, maybe for our first anniversary?? Thank you!

A Dumb Luck Story

Submitted: August 25, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
A dumb luck story... We knew it was last minute to snare a house... But what a pleasant surprise to find the details and the comfort, the beautiful appointments in every room of your vacation home! Bravo for the sensitivity, forethought, and attention to detail.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 days here in Gearhart and your home was the foundation of the experience. Thank you for the opportunity.... (Elvis, our Habanese) felt very safe & secure. We'll be back!

Gearhart best beach town - Deer Hollow best beach house

5 of 5
Submitted: June 7, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
Thank you for allowing us to stay in your home. We loved it. Coffee at Pacific Way Bakery, lunch at Pacific Way Cafe, drinks at McMenamins, dinner at Bridgewater Bistro in Astoria, breakfast at the Junction Cafe, movies (you have a great selection!), beach walks, naps, deer (unfortunately, no elk) - it was all wonderful. The welcome goodies were great and the house had everything we needed. Deer hollow is our favorite house on the coast and we will be back.
