Pockets of jungle nearby echo the exotic sounds of myna birds, cardinals, finches and coquie frogs, while the open park affords an ocean view of an ever changing skyline and ocean movements. It's balmy breezes mixing scents of surf and flowers captivate the spirit and encourage both exploration and relaxation. . Dark nights display a star-studded universe enjoyable from inside or outside on the deck or private rear yard.

What to do: Life is slower, but ripe with the diversity of the Big Island. One can enjoy rarely traveled jungle roads, creation in the making with new black sand beaches and varying volcano activity, or view the world from Mauna Kea’s Observatories high above around 13, 700 ’elevation.

Thank you Gary for providing us a beautiful retreat in a beautiful location. The house was elegant, tastefully decorated, and very comfortable.
The bathroom was luxurious with granite countertops and was very spacious. The bed was extremely comfortable and the whole unit was clean and tidy.
Our favorite part was the porch that overlooked the water. We enjoyed our Kona coffee while watching all the beautiful birds eating their breakfast from the bird feeder right in front of the porch. Thank you again for a wonderful stay!
My wife and I stayed at this property for two weeks, everything was as advertised and more. We appreciated how much attention was given to the little things in making us feel right at home. Great customer service, we both could not say enough about our stay. The one suggestion we would make would be a bigger flat pannel TV, while we were not watching TV much, a bigger TV would be a nice upgrade for the place. Beatuiful views, quiet space, walking distance from the ocean a short drive from a jungle like environment, all within your fingertips.
Very well-tended, imaginatively laid-out split-level studio apartment, with high ceilings, and louvered windows to provide an airy ambience. (It is necessary to climb stairs.) No detail overlooked in the furnishings. The bed was so comfy, it was hard to get up in the morning! Hosted by a welcoming, perceptive couple, generous with their presence when wanted, and also all the privacy one could desire. The owner was easy to contact. It was simple to make the the reservation, and pay for it. They provided treats for breakfast, and coffee and tea. The property description sells it a little short, as there are whimsical decorations to enjoy. The lanai with the birdfeeder nearby brought literally hundreds of city birds into close view. I was there for just a few days, and there was rain, but it was easy to access outdoor activities like swimming, snorkeling, and walking nearby, and many indoor activities are available in Hilo, a half-hour away, during rain. I especially enjoyed the Imiloa Astronomy and Hawaiian culture center, the Kapoho tide pools, and MacKenzie Park. I highly recommend Makana Kai for those who need a quiet retreat during their vacation, with a view of the ocean nearby. I even loved the rain, as did the coqui frogs! I would stay again! Again, the hosts are really lovely people.
We had a wonderful stay at the Makana Kai The studio apartment had everything we needed and more. The ocean view was better than we expected and the croqui were louder than expected but we slept very well!! We miss them now back in Michigan, This was a great value, plus we made several meals there with food we purchased at the nearby Makuu Farm Market, and fruit which our host placed outside our door! Wir waren 7 Tage in Makana Kai und es hat uns sehr gut gefallen. Die Wohnung ist sehr schön eingerichtet mit viel Liebe zum Detail. Alles war sauber und sehr gepflegt. Auf dem Balkon mit Meerblick konnte man sehr gut entspannen und die Vögel im Garten beobachten.
Gary und Karen waren sehr nette und hilfsbereite Gastgeber. Vielen Dank für Obst, Kaffee, Kuchen usw. zur Begrüßung.
Für Menschen mit leichtem Schlaf empfehlen wir Ohrstöpsel, da ab Sonnenuntergang das Froschkonzert beginnt.
Wir empfehlen Makana Kai jederzeit.
Wow! What a delight and a pleasure it was to find this humble abode! Loved the location, and the lay out of the unit-- kitchen downstairs, bedroom upstairs-- and the View! Amazing! The place was even better than the pictures depict---- the warmth and comfort, luxurious bedding, towels, and little touches like soft pillows, memory foam, carpeted stairway, bamboo flooring-- I hope to come back again and just stay and relax!
