This historic 'art studio' was built around 1906 by Judge Batts and Mrs. Batts as a weekend retreat. He was a Texas Supreme Court Justice and famous for creating the immensely powerful Texas Railroad Commission. She was an artist and the first director of the University of Texas Art Department. This is a three story structure that has a roof top deck over-looking Lake Austin located very centrally in Tarrytown about four blocks north of Wash Landing and the Hula Hut. It is a romantic escape for two and has a large jacuzzi tub under clear skylights (added by the current owner/architect), and a stone fireplace and recently upgraded kitchen.

Beautiful Courtyard: A magnificent ancient live-oak tree shades what may be Austin's finest courtyard/party space. There is an outdoor fireplace, enormous charcoal grill, and water pond.

Once a B&B: In the late 90's Linda and Philip experimented with the B&B business. The 'Studio' quickly became a favored honey-moon retreat and was voted 'Austin's most Romantic Retreat'. In those days many movies were being made in the Austin area and some of the guests stayed for extended periods. For example, Producer Linda Obst while filming 'Hope Floats' , Luke Wilson while filming 'The Wendell Baker Story', and Peter Berg while writing the screen play for 'Friday Night Lights'.

Old Austin: The 'Studio' exemplifies what many people associate with old Austin stone architecture. When the rubble filled dam broke on Lake Austin around 1900 the shores were lined with large chunks of limestone. Many of the houses on the eastern side of Lake Austin were built with this material. All of the building's at 'River Oaks Farm' are built with stone interiors and exteriors and heavy hand-hewn timbers. Now the studio is totally upgraded, with a beautiful large kitchen, a large jacuzzi tub under sky lights, and a roof top terrace with a gorgeous wide open view of Lake Austin. Very romantic!

LOOKS LIKE IT CAME OUT OF A BOOK OR MOVIE

As a getaway, this cozy and conveniently located stone cottage has it all. Romance, gorgeous scenery, history, seclusion, all packaged in the kind of picturesque abide you only see in movies or read about in books.
Thank you Philip and Linda for providing the perfect escape for my boyfriend and I to relax and share some much needed alone time while enjoying ourselves, away from concerns of work, stresses, etc. The rooftop terrace and double jacuzzi tub definitely helped us forget about the outside world for awhile.
I cannot rave enough about this place and trust I have already recommended it to some family and friends!
Thank you so much again for the warm welcome, the beautiful yellow roses, and the lovely old world ambience. with luck, we definitely hope to visit again in the not so distant future!

We loved the roof top deck overlooking the river and all the sky lights. It was "wicked awesome" to be so close to the city for the music and shopping and relaxing to sit among the trees with a drink to relax for sunset. We'll definitely be back!

Unique Romance In Excellent Location

My husband and I chose to spend our 10th wedding anniversary here. It is a very unique and memorable cottage in an excellent location. The cottage is very comfortable, and the roof-top terrace and jacuzzi tub were very romantic. The location couldn't be beat. The neighborhood is beautiful and the drive into anywhere downtown is quick and easy. Our only real complaint was that the front door wasn't locking or latching properly. However, we did not feel unsecured because of the gated wall and private location. Linda and Philip responded to our request promptly and were very sweet and easy to work with. We loved our stay and hope to stay again in the future!
