If your destination is Western North Carolina, or if you just want a peaceful mountain get-a-way, then the High Rock Cabin is the perfect base camp, whether your goal is to get out and explore or just rest, relax and unwind. Just minutes from the town of Black Mountain, it's an easy drive to any supplies you may need to complete your stay, or just for a quick trip into town for a meal or shopping. The cabin is easy to find and easy to get to. There is a one mile gravel road, well maintained from highway to driveway, but other than a light coat of dust, gave my VW Beetle no problems.
The cabin is one bed, one bath with a spacious living/kitchen area (about 600 sq. ft. total). Constructed in 2001, it was the owners' primary residence until they and their kids outgrew it and built their new home next door. So this is no "afterthought" rental unit. Modern, very comfortable and, for two people, spacious enough not to get in each other's way. For the adventurous or those toting kids, a sofa bed is also available. Judging by the guest book, I'd say over half the guests also brought their pets - though that is not evident to non-pet owners.
The cabin is well stocked with basic supplies - we brought food and entertainment and found everything else we needed. We may have "wanted" a dishwasher, but we discovered we could actually live without one for a week.
The owners are right next door and are immediately available if you need them - by phone or just by knocking on the door (I recommend the latter - they are great folks!). If you don't need them, however, you have as much privacy as you desire. I daresay you could check in and out without ever shaking hands, but it might be your loss.
It was just beginning to get cool in mid-October and I can assure you, this solid log cabin is very cozy. It doesn't take much for the electric heat to make the place toasty warm. And the insulation is sonic as well - the music from my Bose speaker inside was barely audible on the porch or the deck.
Speaking of deck, the natural landscaping affords you some privacy there as well. Had it been warmer/sunnier during our stay I could have spent a lot of time there.
Rather than own a mountain cabin, beach house or houseboat, I personally prefer instead to know people that do. I have rented from many properties around the country. The High Rock Cabin is clean, inviting, comfortable and so convenient while still offering the seclusion and privacy we like to have. Try it!
