Hello, I am a retired health care professional and will travel if and when my home is rented.
BRENDA BURKE purchased this house in 1998
Because it is in a most desirable area, and is absolutely breathtaking.
It is a very peaceful spot and yet is close enough to urban centers if one wishes to partake of theatre, concerts, etc.
My wife, 2 young girls, parents and I had a wonderful week at this beautiful spot on the Westport River. The long dirt driveway with a "green tunnel" of trees builds the suspense as one approaches... then a crisp, well-designed shingled house greets you with glimpses of the wide River right behind. Our girls loved picking raspberries and blackberries in the yard, splashing in the little beach looking for shells, and playing with the crab trap at the end of the dock. The place was clean, well maintained, well equipped
The owner has chosen top quality appliances, furniture, landscaping and even a handsome new dock to make sure it's a great experience all around... the grill and lawn furniture are great, we took advantage of all of it. Westport's a charming town with lots of natural attractions. Thanks for a great week, wish we could have stayed longer ! See you next year ...
Words cannot describe what an exquisite property this is - the location, the view, the accomodations - all were wonderful - very clean, beautifully decorated, comfortable. The owner was very accommodating. We entertained some friends for dinner one evening - they couldn't believe my good fortune in finding such a great place. Dining on the back patio overlooking the river - great evening!
My family and I just returned from our week long stay at this beautiful home on the river. All of the comments in the reviews are true. The home and property exceeded our expectations. As you go down the long driveway for the first time and see the picturesque and lovely cottage before you, you will be delighted. You will be even more pleased when you see the artistically appointed interior and the magnificent view of the river out of the back of the house. The owner clearly has put an extraordinary amount of effort into making this home a comfortable and lovely vacation spot.
In addition to the sheer beauty of the property and the cottage, the home is also kid-friendly! My husband and I stayed the week with our seven year old triplets and had everything we could need or want to make them comfortable and keep them entertained. The small private beach delighted my kids for hours. They endlessly searched for hermit and horseshoe crabs and swam in the shallow water. We kayaked along the river which the children loved, and they also enjoyed watching all of the chipmunks, birds, and small bunnies.
I asked each of my children what their favorite thing was about the house and their responses were: it was AWESOME, I loved the backyard; it was really fun, I loved the beach; and I loved the beach and the glass room! My husband added that he loved the whirlpool bath. And I loved the fact that everyone was so happy and busy that I actually read an entire book!
We were able to do a variety of activities from Westport. One day, we made the hour drive into Boston and visited the aquarium. Another day, we drove to Plymouth for whale watching which was incredible. We were not disappointed. The rest of the time, we stayed occupied with activities in and around Westport.
The owner has provided all of the amenities necessary to make your stay comfortable. There is an outdoor grill and hammock, and we enjoyed grilling and eating outside while taking in the view. We never tired of the beautiful scenery. Really, this home is an ideal getaway for just about anyone.
I don't think there is enough time, nor will I be allotted enough "characters" to adequately describe this gorgeous getaway retreat, but I will certainly try!
My husband, two little boys (ages 5 and 7) and I had the most idyllic vacation at this beautifully-appointed, well maintained home--and it rained most of the week we were there! There is just something about this charming place that leaves you feeling at once "away from it all" and yet as if you are somewhere that offers all the comforts of home. The owner has put an incredible amount of attention into the finest details--from the general decor to the bed linens to the two-person whirlpool bath to the brand-new dock to the champagne left for us to enjoy during our stay (etc. etc.)...we felt as if we were staying at a luxurious resort but without the excessive price tag!
Our boys couldn't get enough time out on the small private beach area and dock, where we went crabbing as often as we could. They swung on the hammock and played happily in the front and back yards and with the virtual isolation afforded by the trees and fences, we neither heard nor seemed to disturb our nearest neighbors for the duration of the trip. Horseneck Beach is just minutes away and on the days it didn't rain, we went there and to Demarest Lloyd Beach, which is better for the kids (virtually no waves and you can walk out into the water for hundreds of yards). When it did rain, we took a trip up to Boston for a day, went to see a movie in nearby Dartmouth, went bowling 15 minutes away--Westport may seem a sleepy little town but there is much to do in the area and for the most part, local shops are very welcoming and the people quite kind.
Ironically, this WAS going to be our final "annual" trip to Westport. My husband had summered there as a child and in recent years we had vacationed there with his extended family. It was always lovely but we had never left from our trips feeling rested and we thought perhaps it was time to look at other areas of the country for our annual vacations. This trip changed all that. We have found a place where, if the owner is so inclined, we will gladly rent for as many years as we can. I love the idea that when they grow up our children will potentially have the same kind of happy memories my husband had from his childhood times in Westport.
To sum up: I can't recommend this rental enough! If you're on the fence about renting, do it. You won't regret it!
I spent a week at this lovely house with my brother and his family of three college age children. We had a great time both at the rental property and in Westport. The descriptions on the site for this place are accurate - it's just splendid, both the house and the gardens. For a renter, you will be pleased at how well the kitchen is equipped and linens are provided, which is really helpful if you are travelling out of a suitcase. The gardens are beautiful - with a variety of seating and lounging spaces. We saw a hawk. Westport itself is amazing - beautiful beach and marsh land and so unspoiled and serene. Perfect.
This is a special spot to enjoy peace and quiet, kayak out your front door, and watch the wildlife (particularly the birds) from the docks, the decks and even the living room couch. The gardens surrounding this home are just beautiful with flowers, paths, and patches left wild for the many birds and bunnies that come and go. The furnishings are all lovely, clean, and comfortable enough for the discriminating. Many artistic, romantic touches.
Westport is a wonderful location without the hassles or downsides of the Cape and Islands.
