Best Vacation Ever

  • 5 of 5
I am not sure where to start- this was by far the best vacation ever! This home is over the top!!! We were not sure what to expect, but it far exceeded our expectations. Monica was fantastic, Gloria and Gino could not have been nicer and more helpful, the home was cozy, beautiful, incredible breeze off the ocean every night! The stars- oh my we have never seen so many stars, the beach was beautiful, cleaned and groomed everyday by Gino and Joe, and very private we only saw 6 people the whole trip walk past us! Gino, Gloria and Joe took us fishing and when we caught one Gloria prepared it for us- Yummy- the master bedroom and bath was soooo nice, the sunsets were incredible! Next year is a big birthday for me, so my husband and I are going back for two weeks this time! The best part was spending time with my husband just the two of us- we had all the private time we needed but also were able to take a quick drive to town for dinner and cocktails and not worry about the trip back- the area was filled with things to do, the grocery store was great with so many thing to choice from! The home was beyond perfect!!!! I am afraid to say to much for fear that the word will get out and Casa Houston will be booked up!! See you in 2015 Gino, Gloria and Monica & the dogies

Exceptional Vacation House

  • 5 of 5
We've rented houses throughout the islands and the Caribbean and this was the most esthetically pleasing, thought-out and appointed that we've had the pleasure to be in. You can actually cook in the kitchen. The knives are sharp enough. Though the fridge and freezer are small, the house has a nice size cooler. There's a big water dispenser and a supply of water jugs. I know this sounds picky and weird, but those things can really affect how and what you can do in a beach house, and are why I like to rent houses instead of stay in hotels.

The house itself is beautiful and stylish, the pictures of the inside and patio areas are accurate, but don't really convey the beauty and "feel" of the house. It's even better in person. The two bedrooms are good sizes, both face the beach and have good closets and storage.

The downstairs patios offer sun or plenty of shade no matter what the time of day -- we basically shuttled between there and the beach. There's an outside shower that's private and has hot water too!

Having the kitchen so well-appointed is important for one other reason -- at this time, the road really is pretty rough. We did venture out most days, but it was great to know that we could stay at the casa and not have to. Usually, if we were out for the day, we'd pick up a couple chickens and sides at El Pollo Bronco in town and use the stove and oven to warm it later. Or we'd venture out for dinner and have breakfast and dinner in.

Gloria and Gino are a real pleasure to have nearby, if you don't need their help, you'll barely notice they're there, but when you do need them, they take care of it quick. We did have the great chance to have Gloria cook dinner and it was truly delicious.

Monica was easy to deal with and visited us early in the week to make sure all was well.

If you want to be a little remote, but still have a beautiful place to live for a vacation, and have a tolerance for about 15 mins of potholes, you won't find a better spot!

In the Sian Kaaaaaaahhhn!

  • 5 of 5
The pictures on the site show Casa Houston a few years past. The trees and shrubs have matured and created a lush secluded environment. The house and gardens are now enveloped by a manicured jungle that is private and cozy. There are many areas to sit/sleep/read/ponder and enjoy different vantage points of the beautiful surroundings. The property was clean and had everything necessary: adequate towels, pillows, bathroom supplies, kitchen accoutrements and beach accessories. The beach palapa shown in the photograph is no longer there. However, there is a a large beach umbrella in its place.

Our favorite spot at Casa Houston was the balcony off the master bedroom. The breeze was delicious and the views indescribably beautiful.

Gloria and Gino were wonderful caretakers and their children were quiet and respectful. I would not of even known there were children there except for the fact they introduced them to us. Don't hesitate to have Gloria cook for you. It was delicious, fresh and she cleans up the mess (remember you're on vacation). Cesiak is also another easy dining option as it is only a minutes walk north on the beach.

The beach was spectacular and private. No water shoes required here. The sand was soft and free of rocks. Please note that there are a few steps to get down to the beach and the last one is a big one. It did require a big "heave hoe" to get up onto from the deep sand.

Monica made a trip to Casa Houston to introduce herself and asked if she could be of assistance and offered suggestions for tours, etc. Thanks!

I have nothing but great things to say about Casa Houston. The only negative is the ROAD. If you are planning on leaving the property on a daily basis to go to restaurants on the beach road or in town, you need to have a good 4-wheel drive vehicle with a good suspension and lift. We rented a Jeep Patriot thinking this would be sufficient. Unfortunately, it was NOT 4-wheel drive and the undercarriage was higher than most vehicles, but still a bit low for this road. It made it through the week. I'd suggest one of the 4-door Wranglers with the larger tires and lift if available or a Suburban. I called the jungle road past the arches my daily 15 minutes of hell.

Please don't let the mention of the road stop you from visiting this spectacular place. I just felt it was necessary to warn you of that part of your drive.

Casa Houston is a great vacation rental. You won't be disappointed!

Highs and Lows

  • 3 of 5
My time at Casa Houston was during August and I had booked the house for a family vacation. The good: house is beautiful and exceeded expectation in condition, decoration, and amenities, Everything a family could need to enjoy their time was available. The beach was perfect, white, powdery sand, blue green water that was cool enough to refresh but not cold enough to freeze. The area was private. I saw 5 people on the beach the whole week of our stay. Nature surrounded us and we were blessed to see nesting turtles right outside our back door and experience babies returning to see from their nests-amazing! Finally, Gina and Gloria, the Casa caretakers are exceptional hosts. They stay in the bungalow next door and are wonderful hosts and good people.
The bad: the drive from tulum hotel are to the Casa is basically a 5 mile off road adventure along a pot holed, dirt, jungle road. A 4 wheel drive car is a good idea, and if you are concerned about your tires, axles or shocks, than this trek is not for you. No central AC in the house might be ok in cooler seasons, but in the sweltering August heat it can be pretty uncomfortable. For what the Casa rents for I was surprised that the home did not have AC at least in the sleeping areas. Bugs and critters are part of the deal being that the home is well into a jungle preserve. We're talking spiders, lizards, and biting mosqitoes and horseflies! The bug problem is exacerbated by the heat and the need to keep the doors and windows open to catch the ocean breeze. The window screens did very little to keep out the bugs so if you are squeemish about this sort of thing, think again about this location. Your left with the horrible choice of getting eaten by bigs or dripping sweat in the heat. Not fun.
I have rented beach homes in europe and throughout Mexico and the US, and I found the experience at Casa Houston troubling in it's extreme positives and negatives. For this reason I can only rate it as average, and I hope that the managers if this beautiful spot address the weaknesses as it could be one of the very best in the world!

Wonderful location, great staff...bad architecture...horrible management!

  • 1 of 5
It is undeniable that Sian Ka'an is a gem; the flora fauna and secluded beaches are to die for. The location of Casa Houston is ideal - far enough from the entrance to avoid crowds, yet close enough to enjoy Tulum. On the positive side, the caretaker and his wife are also great. However, the house design and architecture leaves a lot to be desired - interrupted views, columns in strange places, views of washing machine instead of lagoon, etc. - which is not a huge issue, but an unfortunate circonstance.

However, in over 6 years of renting with VRBO have I ever come across such rude and cheap management: the simple request of missing kitchen items was unbearable, with pans taking a week, and a simple water pitcher (yes, there were no such) never arrived; borrowing hammocks was like pulling teeth; getting the internet to work took 10 phone calls, since she was "busy"; and so the list goes on...too painful to recount.

Yes, there is another plus side - it is cheap - but, you get what you pay for...sad.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately these Guests got upset with Management, after pointing them out that bringing two unannounced guests for a total of 6 adults was exceeding the maximum occupancy of 4 guests stated in the Rental Agreement. Not only did they violated the contract but also abused the sustainable property in a National Reserve.

Wonderful Rental!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at Casa Houston for nearly 10 days and had a wonderful time. The location is truly special. Being in the Sian Kaan reserve means you are not in the crowded boutique hotel strip. You have privacy, spectacular beach and incredible views. We loved staying at the house--it's charming, relaxing and fits very elegantly with the landscape. The house is very well maintained and stocked. Gino and Gloria were very attentive. And Monica was extremely professional and helpful. We are a family with 2 children and our kids fell in love with Casa Houston and would love to go back!
