Belize Cabana Nightmare - SAFETY HAZARD!
Submitted: January 17, 2013

I travel extensively and want to share my opinion regarding our cabana stay in Belize.
Here are the issues related to safety:
1. The shower curtain and liner were filthy with mold and we were forced to remove and leave it outside. Obviously, this much mildew is unacceptable in any rental and a major health risk! We ended up hiring local help to clean the cabana daily.
2. Several of the electrical outlets were not attached to the wall with exposed wires. A major concern was when we plugged in the hot plate, as it sent an electrical current throughout the house. Example; when you touched the sink, you got a major shock of electricity.
3. There is no hot water in the house. In the shower there is a small electrical device that is supposed to heat the shower water. We could not use it, as there was major electrical arching when turned on. We have a video showing how bad it is. Extremely unsafe!!!
4. The front porch sliding door only locks from the outside. When we were sleeping, anyone could walk in on us! We ended up moving furniture in front of the door. Note; when we arrived on January 3rd, we were walking near the property. We ran into a security guard who mentioned that several of the homes had been broken into and we should be very cautious. He was very courteous and stopped by each evening to check on us. When we told him about the door did not lock, he suggested we move out ASAP, due to safety concerns. One additional item: there was no curtain on the door, so again there was no privacy from anyone walking up to the cabana and looking in, very unsafe.
Additional Issue: There is a video camera on premise that points to the front door and the bed. As the bed is not a common area, we were very uncomfortable with the camera pointing towards the bed.
In hindsight, we should have left immediately!
Now the good news! Belize is a wonderful country and everyone was extremely polite and helpful. We were in Belize two weeks and tried to do everything. All activities we did were great! If you’re a diver do the reef dive, beautiful. We also really enjoyed the Zip line and Waterfall Repel at Mayflower. We also did two caves, one with tubing and then the ATM. Both were well worth the effort!
Enjoy your travels in Belize!
Owner's Response: Since you posted this, there are no inquiries and It will be necessary to change companies in the future....due to your posting a camera pointing to the bed....no maid was ever with the house and it was impeccable. The shower curtain liner had a spot on the bottom....the water was hot when I was there just prior.there was no lock inside as shipped from usa but a 2x2 x3 ft. was always used over 12 years to insert on the bottom of the door which kept it secure for all of my renters and never a problem.....it was beside the door so whatever maid she used as a house not a hotel, they showed up 6 hours late and expected my caretaker who waits one hour as called from the airport to communicte...they never bothered.I have never encountered such rude demanding people in my life and all is clearly spelled out and documented.as to what I offer.....I dont know what they did to my hot water as had just put in a new pump in Jan quaranteed.I did replace the showerhead as they broke it trying to use it as my caretaker said the water was warm, not hot as we care not to burn a client as a Belize system,I have sent all to my attorney and they will be in contact with you in regard to this as untrue....they were young people who as per email were going to go to a private resort and sneak swimming early am...she wanted a first class trip and he was paying and chose a more reasonable place to stay.At my cabana, they have privacy ,yet all of the amenities within a short walk...all is upfront on my personal website which brings me more business.Cramer on CNBC does no longer recommend your company..is there a reason?
