Photos and Description of the Plantage vacation house boat rental
1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, sleeps 2-4

This houseboat will give you the special and authentic Amsterdam experience regardless of your purpose of visit.

Just around the corner of all the nice places, red lights and fine restaurants but not the noise of the drunk people on Dam Square and Leidse square... This location beats everything!

The sundeck affords spectacular views of the Entrepotdok with the warehouses that Amsterdam is famous for on one side and boats passing on the other. The people passing by envy those sitting on the sun deck of the Medicijnman.

Over a hundred years old and once a sailing boat (a Tjalk) the Medicijnman (Medicine Man) was transformed in the late 1950s into a characterful houseboat. With many old features left in place, it gives you an enchanting feel of what it was like to live on the water back then.

It is located in the old centre of Amsterdam in an oasis of tranquillity with central station, the Dam Square, well known theatres (Theater Carré), famous museums (e.g. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum), great restaurants, and other cultural attractions at walking distance. You are less than 2 minutes’ walk from Kadijk square, where there are many great restaurants, such as A Tavola, one of the best Italian restaurants in Amsterdam. The highest wooden windmill in The Netherlands, named ‘De Gooyer’, is situated next to the famous brewery Het IJ (website hidden) which is just around the corner and a must-see when in Amsterdam.

The inside is light, spacious and is well equipped with modern facilities. The bedroom has a double bed and four authentic portholes. The living room has panoramic windows, which let in a lot of light and give beautiful views just above water level. There is a sofa bed which allows room for two extra guests to sleep here, a big dining table and a charming open kitchen. The bathroom consists of a sink and bathtub with a shower plus a washing machine and dryer.

The position of the boat ensures that you will be able to enjoy both sunny breakfasts on the deck in the early morning and spectacular sunsets in the evening.

The Medicine Man is the prescription for a great stay!

We arrived in Amsterdam during a chilly April, but we still had a lovely time. Martyn, Caty, and Carolien were all extremely helpful in making the reservation, answering my questions, and helping us to settle in. This was our first trip to Amsterdam, and they were all able to give us some recommendations on what to see and where to go. The boat had everything that we could have needed and more. Our group was 4 adults, so the boat was a little cozy for the 4 us, but it's definitely doable as long as you all still like each other by this part of the trip.

The location of the boat is great. Definitely eat a meal at Bloom Cafe which is just at the end of the block from the house boat. Also in a 10 minute walking radius are many restaurants, a grocery store, and a brewery! Just about everything in Amsterdam is a walkable distance from the boat.

Our group has come to rely more on VRBO rentals while traveling abroad vs. hotels, and I can definitely say that this was one of our favorite places to stay so far!

We booked this houseboat for a city trip to Amsterdam and enjoyed every day on deck. The houseboat is fully equipped and leaves nothing to be desired. The location is hardly to beat: very quiet and nevertheless the centre of Amsterdam is reached quite fast ... also by foot! At this point we also want to thank for the warm welcome and the many, very useful tips . We had a very nice time on the houseboat, which gives exactly the right feeling of Amsterdam.

Kind Regards,
Martin and friends.

Fabulous place, enthusiastic recommendation

This is an ideal place for a stay in Amsterdam. It is really and truly an outstanding place and an excellent value. It is spacious, attractive, and well-appointed. It has the feel of a boat and all the amenities of a private home. The location is very quiet but very close to all the action. Note that the boat does move when the wind blows, and the loud animals in the zoo early in the morning--I LOVED both of these elements but others might not. :) The place is more homey than a sterile hotel, not quite as polished, but a much better value and with a lot more amenities (entertaining space, cellphone for local calls, laundry, full kitchen with staples (not only dishes and utensils but also things like coffee and oil and vinegar and jam)). The views and light on the canal are wonderful. I agree with the previous review, that it would be nice to include the bikes in the price, and/or they could be maintained just a bit better (the bike lights didn't work), but I must also say that it is very convenient for a short stay to have the bikes handy without the extra chore of going to a local bike rental place. Channels on the TV are limited but that isn't important to me--basic news in Dutch, English, German, etcetera is available. Everything works well--WIFI, kitchen appliances, laundry, hot water, heat. The decor is nice, tasteful and understated with some humorous touches. Great to have a bookcase full of stuff and I left some additional maps as a thank-you to those responsible for building up the map collection before my arrival. The owner, Martyn, and the person in the neighborhood who helps him out, were both great to deal with in English. I cannot give a higher recommendation to their level of service and to this wonderful houseboat. One final note--if you stay here, even your Dutch friends will be impressed.

The Most Perfect Place To Stay in Amsterdam!

  • 5 of 5
  • Submitted: Jan 18, 2013

Our stay was perfect....in every way! Caty, the manager and mother of the owner was so organized in all of our emails prior to arrival and on board to greet us when we arrived. She coordinated our private taxi transport to/from the airport and our driver was the best with a very clean and beautiful car! Check in was efficient and Caty had maps, brochures and contacts organized and ready. The boat is perfect for coming and going with Tram 9 just a few short blocks away and very central to all that we wanted to do...museums, ballet, theater, galleries, we even took the high speed train to Brugge early one morning and back the same night! A perfect day trip and fast! We loved our time on the boat and wished we could have stayed several more days - it is clean, well maintained, comfortable with all of the ammenities you could possibly want or need - a shower, washer/dryer with a fully stocked kitchen, everything perfect. There are (2) bikes available and a local grocery close by....and if I was going to comment on only one down element to our stay is that they charge an additional 8 euros to use the bikes on the honor system. Considering the rates, I would think the bikes would/should be included. We left 7 euros which is what we had left and (2) museum pass cards worth about $100.00 in free admissions for the next guests to enjoy. Our pleasure! If you have the chance and want a great Amsterdam experience - stay here - you will love it!

Owner's Response: Dear Vincent,
Thank you for your review, the museum cards and your feedback.
We charge the 8 euro per day for the bikes to maintain them. We bring them very often to the shop to make sure they're in top condition. So the 8 euro's is the way to keep the bikes in shape and to make sure there are bikes at the boat so you don't need to go to a bike rental company with all the hassle...
If I would include the bikes in the price per night the price would go up and that wouldn't be fair for the guests who don't use the bikes...

Anyway, hope to see you again!
Regards,
Martyn

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on the houseboat. It was as described in the listing and more.
The photos are accurate. The boat was cosy, clean and in a great location. Caty answered our questions and provided excellent advice on museums, shopping and restaurants. She also left us a well stocked pantry, wine and flowers.
We enjoyed good meals at Cafe Kadijk, T'Avola and Koffiehuis van den Volksbond all with a 10 minute stroll.
Looking out the window and seeing zebra, giraffe and swans added to the enjoyment.

Owner's Response: Thank you Jean, it was a pleasure to have you and James staying on our boat. I hope you will have the opportunity to return in the future. I also take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Greetings, Caty
