About Tara

My husband, my two kids and I love getting out of the city for a mountain escape. We are lucky to live in S. Ca. where you can live in a busy metropolitan area yet be in the mountains in just two hours! (Don't drive during rush hour!) Big Bear has four seasons, clean air, beautiful skies….we love it! The cabin is a labor of love…we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Tara purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Tara chose Big Bear Lake

What a great question! Why did we buy this property….you will know the minute you open the door, : )

What makes this cabin unique

Log, Log, Log, great sunlight in the cabin, wonderful covered front porch with a view of the tree tops. The Spa. The Great Room Mountain Style. The Great Kitchen. No Junk Drawers! The Empty Garage! Steps to the National Forest with a great sled hill and the park in the opposite direction with tennis, basketball and a skate board park!!!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Submitted on our previous website:

"I almost don't want to tell anyone about this because I am kind of selfish about things I love, but being that this is the holiday time of year, one good deed deserves another. The place is fun, great looking / feeling and peaceful. The high ceilings and wood put you at ease right away. I sat at the kitchen bar for hours reading and sipping wine. My two kids were in heaven. Tara has a ton of games, puzzles and toys for them to play with. They didn't touch what we brought up. The kids room is so fun, my son now wants bunk beds. Watched the laker game and all sorts of football on the flat screen and slept like a stone in the master bed. What is really unusual is that everything is where you need it. The toilet backed up once and in the first cabinet I looked...there was a plunger. Problem solved. Needed to make some tea... tea kettle was in the first place I looked. Its like you're at home, with snow. Could go on about the nice hot tub on a snowy night, lounging by the fire or walking to the Natl. Forest, but then YOU might book my next trip here. Tara is nice and easy to deal with and left very clear instructions. We have booked many vacation homes and these were the most easy to decipher. Kudos!"

Well-appointed, cozy and clean!

  • 5 of 5
My family and I just returned from a fall weekend in this lovely cabin. It was perfect for our family of four! It was very clean and organized, modern and every need seemed to anticipated by all of the thoughtful touches. We loved the hot-tub; the cozy sectional leather couch; and the king-size bed. My kids loved that there were two sets of bunk beds in the children's space. No arguing over who got the top bunk! There were books, games, movies, puzzles and toys. We loved the location being a bit quieter and only a short drive to the village. Tara, the owner, was efficient, kind and so easy to work with. She answered any questions I emailed with promptly. We would love to stay here again sometime!

Clean and Cozy!

  • 5 of 5
My family and I stay in Big Bear every winter and have rented many different cabins. Sugarbear is probably the cleanest cabin we have every stayed in! We do have high expectations, so I do not make this claim lightly. The Sugarbear cabin is exactly as it appears in the photos. It is clean and very cozy and comfortable. The gas fireplace is great and keeps the family room nice and toasty. The couch is large and very comfortable. We found the beds to be comfortable as well. The kids really enjoyed sleeping in the bunks too! A spa is a must for us, so we really enjoyed that! The kitchen was amply stocked with pots, pans, and utensils. Tons of toys, movies, and books for kids! This cabin has a very warm and homey feeling. We will definitely be back!

Perfect Mountain Getaway!

  • 5 of 5
To sum it up, Sugar Bear Lodge is perfection on the mountain! Words cannot begin to describe this place. Having never stayed in Big Bear, I didn't know what to expect, but all doubt were put aside as soon as I walked in. We arrived during December and I was so happy to find it decorated for the Christmas season, including a tree!! It made it THAT much more special. The attention to detail is amazing, the care and effort that is put in to making sure your stay is enjoyable is second to none. The kitchen alone was awesome, I couldnt believe there was a crockpot and cookbooks! The king size beds made me not want to leave! I cannot say better things about this place, it was one of the best times! Thank you so much, it really was lovely!

Owner's Response: Such a great review to read and special to me cause I didn't ask for it, : ) This time of year is so busy I don't like to bug my guests with a request. So, thank you very much for noticing my efforts and taking the time to write! The cabin sparkles at Christmas...glad you enjoyed that too!

Comfy, spacious, airy and charming

  • 5 of 5
We are a couple in our mid-fifties from a Boston suburb who spent three nights at Sugar Bear in August with my two young adult sons, the oldest of whom now lives in San Diego. As we drove into the Big Bear resort area past a hodgepodge of cabins, from the tacky and dilapidated to the modern rustic, I admit to some nervousness at booking this unknown over the Internet. But once we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised that Sugar Bear was at the high end of the spectrum, and in fact, the website photos accurately depicted what we saw. Woodsy, spacious and bright with an Adirondack-style décor, the cabin had all the amenities you would expect to find if good friends had left you the keys to their very nice vacation home: a well-stocked kitchen (I’ve rented condos before – most don’t come with this many supplies and spices), just-right cushy bedding and an amass of toys, books and games that we didn’t need, but would more than suffice for families with young children. As an added bonus, the owner helped my cousin and his family rent the next-door cabin with an almost identical layout. And while we did spend a good deal of our time outside during the day, we were very happy to curl up at night on the living room couch or sit and read on the outdoor deck. The kids, in particular, had a good soak in the hot tub every night.

The owner was very thorough on providing details on what to do in the area, how to find items in the cabin. If we had a questions, she responded quickly.

While I occasionally follow the adage that a backwoods retreat doesn’t require more than a place to hang your clothes and sleep, having a cabin with charm and plenty of space upgraded our vacation experience. Would love to come back!

Owner's Response: Wow! Such a beautifully written review...thank you! I loved hearing about your journey to the cabin and of course loved the part at your arrival, : ) These are the kind of reviews that make me look over my kitchen and make sure I continue to receive this kind of response. Thank you so much for taking the time to write!

This place is nicer than my house!!

  • 5 of 5
My wife, 3 kids, and I stayed here for 2 night and enjoyed ourselves completely.
The place was nice and clean. The amenities were great. My kids put the spa to good use as well as the tv in their room. They loved the bunk beds and didn't want to leave. The king size bed was comfortable and clean and kept me nice and warm.
Tara couldn't have been more helpful. She was quick to respond with any questions I had regarding the rental process and gave us more than enough info regarding the area and the cabin. My family and I hope to stay here again in the winter.
