This log home has been used by our family and also rented as a vacation rental since 1997 and which is described on HomeAway, FlipKey, and our own VermontLogHome.com web site. Typically the cabin is rented almost every week from June through October and then one weekend and one week per month for the remainder of the year.
My plan was to continue to rent the cabin as a vacation rental to help fund my retirement.
Happily, I met a lovely woman and we are making plans elsewhere, including _lots_ of ballroom dancing so we are selling this property.
Tom - Please use email if possible. purchased this house in 1994
When I found the property in 1994, I walked the property in the rain and saw the stream, the waterfall and glacial pothole, and the pond. Arriving back at the cabin, I turned to the realtor and said 'I'll take it!' and he asked 'Don't you want to see the inside?' The property felt that good that I knew I could take care of anything needed in the inside. (Note: It did take 3 years to repair the inside and we have been renting it as a vacation rental since 1997). The cabin has comfortable charming interiors which include spacious living room with large fireplace, fully equipped kitchen, dining area, master suite, sleeping loft, and screened in porch. Every window gives a view of trees, pond, and pasture. The living room with cathedral ceiling has a large 4 foot wide fireplace which offers a great view of the fire.
Peace and quiet is what you will find here punctuated with visits from the flock of turkeys and the blue heron that returns each year.
We did our ski trip with total of six people and two dogs. The cabin is big enough for six people. The living room with double height space is nice and cozy, especially with the fireplace lighten up. My dogs love running in the woods and refused to come into the car for ski. We enjoyed the extremely beautiful night view of clear sky and stars. Haven't seen this for years since we live in NYC for too long. I wish we could stay longer. A whole week would be nice. The only down side is this place is a bit far from good downhill ski resorts. We traveled around 1 hr for Stratton Mountain Ski Area. But giving the price, I say it's completely worth the time. There is a pretty good Chinese restaurant "Panda North" nearby.
We chose this log home because we were looking for an affordable place set away from neighbors, with some land around it for exploring, for our family and our dog. We also wanted to be near places that we were interested in for hiking. The owner is great about e mailing and answering any questions, and we left for our trip feeling that we new exactly what to expect. We received an e mail packet with tons of information, and even a map from our house to the cabin!
We made use of all of the sleeping spaces, and everyone slept comfortably. We enjoyed the choice of being able to eat at the kitchen table or outside at the picnic table and we found everything we needed for cooking. The notebook and bulletin board shared ideas for places to eat out, but we only had lunch out on the way back from The Crowley Cheese Factory (don’t drive all the way there unless your name is Crowley and you need the T shirt!) We ate at Bryant’s in Weston, which is at one of the Vermont Country Stores. It was excellent, but the grocery store was so convenient, the kitchen was great, and there’s a BBQ, so we chose to eat at the log home the rest of the time.
For day trips, we enjoyed the State Park in Brattleboro, Mount Manadnock and Chesterfield Gorge Geological Park, which is really nearby, and we just happened upon it-very pretty little hike! We also spent nice, relaxing time reading and talking in the beautiful yard, hanging out at the fire pit (so nice to see tons of stars!!), playing some of the games that were there, and enjoying the breezy view from the sun porch (a nice, quiet spot away from the rest of the house.).
The boys enjoyed the hammock, wandering around the surrounding land, checking out the bullfrogs at night and cooling off in the waterfall and pond. We didn’t have time to check out any of the cute little shops, but there seem to be many to choose from!
We were so happy to find such a great place to get away from it all, and keeping the price down by cleaning up after ourselves was an added plus-very manageable. For the first time ever, I wasn’t in a hurry to get home to my dog-we were so glad that he was able to enjoy this time with us!
Tranquil is how I would describe this rental. Between the frogs and birds singing, and the babbling brook, you really can get away from it all. My husband and I chose to sleep in the loft, which is clean and well-lit with many windows and a skylight. We woke up every morning to sunlight and big bees bumping up against the windows, and ended each evening sitting on the sun porch overlooking the pond, glass of wine in hand. The owner seems to have everything you need on hand: wi-fi, DVD player, spices for cooking, coffee, a hammock.
Prior to my stay I received detailed and accurate information about the rental and surrounding amenities and attractions. Our favorite restaurants (we love to eat) were Three Stones (Mayan food - do not miss the chance to try this), Brattleboro Cheese Shop and Cafe, and in Keene NH, Fritz's Frites. There's a really fun second-hand store in town that you could lose hours in, I know we did.
We had absolutely no issues and did not need to contact the owner once. This is what I think is known as a housekeeping cottage - rental rates are kept down by each renter cleaning up when they go. All supplies are on hand and there's a checklist (see if you can find the joke inside the list!) - a very reasonable list of things to do. My husband and I went in 2012 for our honeymoon and came back in 2013 for our anniversary. We look forward to going again and again in the years to come.
We are located only 2 hours from Boston, 4 hours from New York City, 15 minutes from Brattleboro, 60 minutes from Mt. Snow/Haystack, and 70 minutes from Bennington.
