Don't Be Late!

I cannot comment much upon the grounds as I experienced little of them. This is true because I stayed in the confines of my rental, the Key West Cottage, because I wanted to avoid the proprietor. The reason? My first 15 minutes for a week’s stay here proved to be that unwelcoming. At the time of my reservation, I had requested an early check-in. However, I never received a response, except a confirmation of my total amount due that indicated check-in was at 3 p.m. So when I arrived at 3:30 p.m., imagine my surprise when I was chastised for “being late” and she had “waited around” for the 1:30 p.m. requested check-in. Even after I apologized for the misunderstanding (??), the proprietor reminded me repeatedly that I was tardy and had inconvenienced her. This, as she discussed her many rules (she told my mother not to use a white washcloth to wipe her make-up off & told me I had parked in the wrong spot even though I was legally parked on the street). The next day, when I phoned her about the TV/DVD combination in my bedroom (a specific reason I had selected this particular space as I was told there was a TV in the bedroom and they had “Premium Satellite Service With Movie Channels”), the proprietor didn’t say, “I’m sorry for the TV confusion” but instead said, “I told you at check-in that the TV in the bedroom was with the DVD player only.” The pattern was clear that she would consistently be speaking to me as if I was a child rather than the middle-aged educator, paying customer, and patron that I was. I was so off-put by her condescending tone that I chose not to walk the grounds, never visited the “complimentary DVD library” for my DVD-only TV (why is there satellite service in the cottage but only for the living room television?), never reported the well-sized cockroach in our unit, and I never inquired where our absent spa robes were. To enhance my disappointment, neither of the proprietors checked in with us even once during our 7-day stay to inquire about how our visit was going. I’m not accustomed to spending my hard-earned money to receive such uncongenial service. In the B & B business, hospitality is key. I didn’t think it too much to expect warmth, appreciation, and a welcoming greeting. While our overall space was mostly comfortable, the host made me feel quite uncomfortable. I cannot recommend Casa Grandview to anyone who’s trying to rest and unwind because they may, instead, find tension and unease.
