Every Sunday morning a local farmers market offering all sorts of local produce from food to gifts takes place 'between the waters' opposite the tourist office and should not be missed. Ballina has many good restaurants and pubs including the exceptional 'Cherrytree restaurant'. Killaloe has a network of charming narrow streets, flanked by old shops & houses, that climb up the steep hillside & look down over the 13th century cathedral. Short tours of the River Shannon and Lough Derg are available from the Ballina side aboard the 50-seater passenger boat Spirit of Killaloe. During July the Brian Boru Festival brings traditional music and a variety of entertainment, inside and outside, to the towns for a week. Towards the end of July the Killaloe International Music Festival centered on the historic cathedral, concentrates on the classics and is growing in reputation around the world. Every September, Killaloe is the venue for the European Pike Angling Championships. The historic towns of Killaloe & Ballina offer an exceptionally beautiful riverside setting and access to Ireland’s greatest waterway. The River Shannon is a popular cruising, boating & angling destination extending from Donegal in the North, with canal extensions to Galway in the west, Dublin in the east and Waterford in the south extends to Limerick where it enters the Atlantic Ocean.

The property is located just 30 minutes from Shannon airport, 20 minutes from Limerick, 1 hour from Galway, 1 hour 45 minutes from Dublin Airport, it is an ideal base for exploring Ireland and it's Celtic heritage.

We look forward to welcoming you to this unique part of beautiful Ireland.

About David Gaughan

We are an Irish family living in the United Arab Emirates. We built this house as our home in 2000 and lived in it for 5 years prior to moving to Dubai where we now live. We decided to keep the house & rent it weekly to foreign visitors because we felt that its unique location and design offered something special and different to the decerning traveller. We have rented property all over the world and know what we like. We have put our experiences into the product that we offer, such as the unique touches you find in a home as opposed to your standard generic holiday rental and we do not charge extra for utilities and linen, it's all included in your quote.

David Gaughan purchased this house in 2000

Why David Gaughan chose County Clare

This property is not just a holiday rental, it is a home. It is fitted out to a 5 star level with all modern conveniences and top quality bedding and linens. Every room has a view, which believe or not is even beautiful in the Irish rain! The property is uniquely positioned within walking distance to great shops, pubs and restaurants but the main attraction is its tranquil location overlooking the beautiful River Shannon.

What makes this house unique

A great homely getaway with stunning views set in a quiet location guaranteed to relax you, yet only minutes walk from all the amenities you could require. The house is well positioned as a relaxing base to see all Ireland has to offer to the traveller.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We found it so easy to book this property. We arrived late in the evening and the directions given took us right to the door. Immediately felt at home, there was games and TV and videos for the kids plus a games room full of toys for the younger ones (4 Kids!). The house was Fabulous, spacious and welcoming. Great sized bedrooms with quality linens and loads of bathrooms. I loved the beautiful fully functioning kitchen and we relaxed outside and watched the sun set on the deck over a glass of wine.

The following days were spent visiting all the wonderful sights and attractions and we thought this property was such a perfect base from which to set off and return to. We had lunch most days on the road, but it was great to arrive home in the evening and prepare dinner as the kids played outside and my older teenagers walked to the local village for ice-cream. All very safe. Loved to sit and watch the boats move up and down the Shannon from the fabulous deck. Worst part was having to leave. We will be back…

Perfect Holiday Home

We rented this fantastic house in October 2009 - 3 generations under one roof & we all had our own 'space'.The property was immaculate & does not want for anything - every requirement is catered for from kitchen equipment to household linens & even a BBQ in the beautiful private garden. The rain didn't matter as the views over the Shannon are breathtaking ( we saw 7 rainbows but were not quick enough to go over the bridge & reach the pot of gold ! ) Killaloe is a must to visit, quaint little shops, each owner willing to chat & pass the time of day - lovely old fashioned values still exist as you are even greeted by people you pass in the street. The Sunday market is well worth a visit followed by coffee in the Ponte Vechio coffee shop where the atmosphere is 'grand & Andrew will make you very welcome. The restaurant in Church Street is excellent especially Pie Night - you will need to book. Crotty's bar is full of character & serves good wholesome food. On the Ballina side Goosers is well worth a visit. We all really enjoyed our holiday & are unanimous that your lovely house must be re-visited as soon as possible - can't wait.

Great stay!

  • 5 of 5
We found this house to in a terrific location amid 2 charming little towns. We chose this site because we wanted to explore much of the south of Ireland and this was a great location to use as our homebase. On our 4th day we took the train to Dublin to experience a bit of Ireland's urban life -- we caught the train less than 2 miles away from the house in Birdhill. Geraldine (the property caretaker) was of great help when we arrived and when we called with a question. Our only suggestion would be to also post a picture of the front of the house. Since the front and back are so dramatically different, we thought we were at the wrong location when we arrived and circled the neighborhood twice looking for the house in the picture (this picture shows the back -- the front has a single-level look).

Owner's Response: Thank you for your positive review. We are happy that the house and location met your needs. We pride ourselves in offering a quality product with a quality service to support it. Regarding your question about there being a picture of the front off the house available there is in fact one there already titled "front of house" but i will move it towards the beginning of the 24 pictures available to make it easier to find. We value your comments and look forward to welcoming you back again next year.

Awesome Visit

My family and I spent a week here in March and it was wonderful. Great location for exploring all of Ireland, the local village, or sitting in the yard and enjoying the beautiful view. The house was very comfortable and we all had a great time.

Seven of us (five adults and two children) stayed here for three nights in late April/early May. The home was clean, well appointed, quiet, and had a wonderful view of the Shannon and the hills beyond. The home was a short walk away from a variety of pubs and restaurants and short drive to attractions such as Bunratty Castle and Folk Park and the Cliffs of Moher. Highly recommended.

Perfect homebase

  • 4 of 5
Our party consisted of 5 adults, all in our 40's. We flew into Dublin, and after an hour or so drive, we pulled into the driveway. The house is as presented online. It has four bedrooms and three baths. a small living room, a dining room, an eat at bar, and table on the patio that seats apx.8-10 people. The playhouse for the kids is rotted out and really should be removed, so I wouldn't choose this house for that aspect.

The upstairs has two bedrooms: King bed/bath/couch in one room; Full with single bed/bath in other room. Downstairs there are two rooms - one has a futon bed and clearly set up for kids with plenty of play things for them.

We used this house as a home base as we drove around and went sight seeing. As this house is centrally located, and only a couple miles away from a major highway, we found it easy to get from place to place. Limerick is only 20 minutes away and was a great day trip. Kilkenney was a bit longer of a drive, but it was easy and enjoyable.

The town has a great farmer's market on Sunday mornings where we stocked up on fresh cheese, other food dishes, and fresh fish. Everything in town is a short walk, and as others said Gooser's Pub was a consistently good place to eat. Ate there twice during our week long stay.

The house is well furbished with dishes, coffee press, serving utentsils etc...We really only used the house early in the morning and late in the evening. We would return in time to watch the sunset over the mountains on the other side of the river, sit out on the deck and enjoy the river.

We had one evening where a rain storm had come in (shocker, I know) and the power must have gone out. We called and were told immediately how to switch the breaker and were back in business. Very friendly and helpful.

While we were there, we had friends drive in to visit and they stayed at the hotel a block up the road.

I would definitely stay here again and enjoyed our visit.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind review. We are glad your stay was enjoyable and that you loved the area as much as we do. Since your visit I have replaced the steps and refloored the playhouse, the Irish winter was beginning to take its toll. We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future.
