Casteyre is a traditional stone Gascon farmhouse which comfortably accommodates eight to ten people. It was originally built in the 17th century as three sheep folds, or 'bergeries'. It has been transformed into a large single spacious, sun-filled four-bedroom home, all on ground level which combines the house’s rustic character with all modern comforts. The property enjoys panoramic views over the idyllic Gascon countryside. With its thick honey-coloured stone walls, it stays cool in summer, but is warm and cosy in winter.
Casteyre is situated in ten acres (four hectares) of private land on a hilltop between two sunny valleys, enjoying 360-degree views over the surrounding Gers countryside of valleys, vineyards, woods, sunflower and corn fields, farms, medieval villages, and the Pyrénées mountains. The medieval pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella in Spain runs right past the property.
The house is at the end of a lane among oleander bushes and olive trees. Guests have the use of all of the mature gardens and many terraces, as well as a croquet set, outdoor table tennis, table football and for those who want to be truly french enjoy our newly constructed flood lit petanque court (french boules). There are five different terraces situated around the gardens. All have different views and atmosphere, comfortable garden furniture and suitable lighting. There is a large salt-water swimming pool with a beautiful cascade, situated by the main terrace, overlooking the surrounding landscape (heated upon request). The pool is lined with non-slip crushed marble; at one end is a shallow area with roman steps where children can play safely. The pool is surrounded by a well-stocked border planted with lavenders and cypress trees. It can be floodlit at night, as can the gardens and terraces.
The house is full of light-filled rooms with high ceilings, original oak beams, shuttered windows, and exposed stone walls. The floors are made up with restored old tiles and strewn with antique rugs. The rustic oak front door opens into a large hallway which leads to the open-plan living area, furnished with large comfortable sofas and armchairs and antique sideboards. It also has a large wood burning stove, for those chilly evenings or winter breaks (in addition to underfloor heating throughout the house). The stone walls are adorned with original paintings and beautifully decorated. A dining area easily seats ten. Guests have the use of satellite flat screen television, dvd player, a cupboard full of traditional and current games, and of course wifi internet access.
French doors lead onto the first of many terraces, where guests can dine outside under a pretty canopy or if preferred choose another terrace under the stars. The bright traditional-style kitchen is fully modernised and equipped with a large fridge-freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, oven, microwave, coffee machine etc, and a bone china dinner service. For the gourmet cooks the cupboards have all utensils you would require.
Each of the four finely furnished bedrooms have luxurious en suite bathrooms with power showers, and French doors leading to the terraces.
The Green bedroom (a favourite with children) has twin beds, en suite shower room and opens onto the main communal terrace. The Red bedroom has a traditional French double bed, full en suite, plus an extra double sofa bed and its own door to the gardens.
The Gold bedroom has a queen size bed, full en suite, and patio doors to a smaller terrace shared with the Blue bedroom, which has a Victorian double brass bed., and shower room.
All bedrooms are exquisitely decorated and furnished. An extra toilet is available in the hallway.
In addition to this wonderful property we have a small collection of various farm animals. There is plenty for children to see : the donkeys, miniature goats and Loulou the friendly pig. Fresh eggs are available during your stay from our very own happy chickens. There are also several cats and three small very friendly dogs, including Digley the extra tiny dachshund who loves to play with children if allowed.
Please note as the house and outside access is all on one level, it is also suitable for disabled and elderly guests.
