Dramatically perched 60 ft. over the calm Caribbean Sea, 'Cliffhanger' presents stunning views across Coral Harbor and into Hurricane Hole. Completely re-modeled and professionally decorated in 2011, this waterfront villa offers everything new; a new modern full kitchen with all the amenities, new bathrooms with stunning detail, and all new furniture, appliances, and electronics. 'Cliffhanger' is ideal for couples and perfect for families, as it comfortably accommodates up to 6 guests with its 3 air conditioned bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. The master bedroom, kitchen, extra bathroom and living space is located on the main level. The other two bedrooms, each with their own entrance off the lower deck, can be reached via an exterior staircase. Having our home set up this way allows us to offer the master bedroom alone or in combination with either one or two of the downstairs bedrooms. Gaze into the mesmerizing blue and watch boats from all parts of the globe as they glide through the turquoise waters of Coral Bay Harbor. Spot turtles and sting rays from the sprawling dramatic deck while mixing drinks at the outdoor bar. Cheer on sailboat races from the comfort of your hammock.
'Cliffhanger' is located waterfront to Coral Bay with surf sounds around the entire property. From the villa you can easily access the Virgin Islands National Park and white sand beaches for hiking, water sports such as sailing, snorkeling, or diving, or just plain lounging on the beach. The Village of Coral Bay is just under 1/2 mile away, with many shops, restaurants, bars, and access to an array of adventurous activities. The still-pristine island of St. John is the smallest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands and lies just 3 miles east of St. Thomas and a mile from the nearest of the British Virgin Islands. Nearly two-thirds of the island is national park, with forests and nature trails for your enjoyment. Nature lovers will be amazed by St. John's ecological diversity.
Conveniently located with paved access to the front door, high speed internet, cable TV, soft linens, spacious decks both in the sun and in the shade, big blue ocean views from every room, and lush outdoor environment; these are but a few of the features that make 'Cliffhanger' the perfect choice for your St. John vacation.

Wow! First time to St. John, or the Caribbean, and by luck and hours of pouring over vacation rentals we found Cliffhanger in Coral Bay and hit the jackpot! What's not to love? Peaceful, breezy, private, wonderful views over Coral Bay, Iguana's in the treetops at eye level from the deck, hummingbird feuds over the nectar in the feeder. Then in the warm night the glorious sounds of creatures all around chirping, shrilling, croaking...wish I knew what they all were! Love the shells in the rockery, and stairs down to the water. Am amazed at how much work went into resurrecting Cliffhanger, and the Vision that Denise and Nick had to do it! Cliffhanger is very unique, classy, and comfortable. You can see the loving care and thoughtfulness everywhere you look. Believe the photos that are posted.
Denise was wonderful to work with, answering my questions promptly and giving us tips about St. John. We hadn't rented through VRBO before, so were a little nervous, but Denise made me feel very comfortable about the process, and about our choice. Their manager Jared who lives locally, met us upon arrival and got us settled in and was available should we have any questions.
We cooked most meals at Cliffhanger, eating on the deck which was lovely. The kitchen was very well equipped and lovely. We ate out a few times: Miss Lucy's (lovely eating outside) and Vie's (Conch Fritter's...Yumm!). Had drinks at High tide in Cruz Bay, sitting in plastic chairs on the beach, feet in the water
Snorkeled at Salt Pond Beach, nice and sandy beach, decent snorkeling, and at Haulover Bay (next to road) rocky beach but otherwise very good.
Rented a Zodiac in Cruz Bay for rather a day and motored around to the North Beaches to swim and snorkel! Very fun. Saw Turtles and Stingrays at Francis Bay. Trunk Bay had great soft sand and beach walking, but snorkeling was a dud for us there.
In conclusion, a massive twoThumbs up for Cliffhanger, and to Denise and Nick for dreaming it, creating it, and allowing us to pretend that it was ours, if only for a week. We will definitely be returning to Cliffhanger, hopefully soon!
1. Wow!....That was the first thing I felt when walking in the door and seeing the view at Cliffhanger. Once I got over that I looked around and immediately started to relax. 2. Nice! was my next feeling. This place was so tastefully and comfortably appointed that we just melted into the vacation mode (no worries). 3. Then, never a dull moment at this place. They have an incredible stone stairway down to the bay. (I'll never figure out how someone managed to build it.) Our kids are 11 and 15. They need lot's of action so trips down the steps to the bay were welcome. Getting in the bay to snorkel was a bit challenging but soooo worth it. 4. Or.....you can also sit on the deck and watch the snorkelers from there if you choose. We saw rays and big fish in the crystal clear water below right off the decks.
We really never wanted to leave the house but the fun restaurants and interesting beaches on this side of the island were calling us. All good!
Thank you Denise!
This is an ideal location for a St John vacation and a wonderful home. It was so nice to be ON THE WATER in St. John. You could hear the waves day and night, watch the wildlife (We saw stingrays from the deck) and from any of the decks watch sail boats fly in or tack out of Coral Bay. The house has all the amenities you need and the layout was great (3 bed rooms with ensuite baths and a full bath off the kitchen). Everyhing was new and in perfect working order. Parking was easy and you are just a short trip to Coral Bay if you need anything. THis would be a great home to share with 2 other couples as all the bedrooms are very private.
Cliffhanger is a great launching pad or destination in its own right! All three bedrooms are clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated, and have to-die-for views and private bathrooms. The common space has a fourth full bathroom. The kitchen has more stuff than any place we've rented before, including a coffee maker, blender, rice cooker, toaster, and plenty of dishes and cookware. The two decks offer a cool breeze and plenty of shade for hanging out together, or apart, and enjoying the sound of the surf and amazing view of the ocean. You could easily spend your days just chilling at the house.
If you want to get out, I would drive. Although the house is very close to a few shops (including Dolphin Market-- which has excellent produce and some items I would expect to see at a high end store on the mainland), the windy road has very little shoulder, and the cars go pretty fast. If you want to go for a run, you likewise should drive someplace. (I enjoyed the rough dirt road and then trails by Great and Little Lameshur beaches.)
Other recommendations: 1) You can't beat a sunrise hike up Ram Head, just beyond Salt Pond Bay. (It's nice any time, but at sunrise you'll have the trail to yourself, and likely won't have to share the beach upon your return.) 2) Rent kayaks at Crabby's and paddle to Hurricane Hole. (Go for the full day. A half day wasn't enough to take it all in.) 3) Most of us got massages by Suki, who was excellent! firstname.lastname@example.org. We set up on the lower deck, which offered total privacy, along with a cool breeze, and the sound of the surf. 4) Getting in the water at the base of the steep wood and stone stairway from the house is challenging, but rewarding. There's decent coral along the edge in the direction of the harbor. 5) Don't miss dinner at Sweet Plaintains! (We went twice.) 6) Keep your eye open for live music opportunities. We caught some on Thursday night at Skinny Legs and wished we'd gone earlier. 7) And, of course, the beaches. In addition to the popular north shore beaches (we really liked Francis Bay, next to Maho Bay), Coral Bay offers its own gems. If you prefer a sandy beach, Salt Pond Bay and Little Lameshur are nice. If you crave solitude, and don't mid a smooth pebble beach, Great Lameshur is appealing.
Denise was attentive before, during and after our trip, and the property manager graciously accommodated our unexpectedly late arrival due to flight snafus. We were well cared for!
Though a Concordia tent cabin kind of guy at heart, I enjoyed our stay at Cliffhanger doing the friend/couples thing in March 2015, two different couples each of our two weeks. The three bedroom/bathroom combinations are very nicely appointed, so none of the couples feels the poor cousins stuck in the attic. The decks up and down allow privacy and the up deck is the morning and evening eating and socializing space. Cliffhanger has a well equipped and functional kitchen that I would be happy to have in my own home. The open kitchen and lounge area allows the cooks to schmooze with the others while doing their preps. Then it is dinner on the deck with the electric candles provided and a pleasant breeze from across the bay.
Cliffhanger’s location on the main Coral Bay road is convenient, about midway between some of the best snorkeling spots on the East End. It is also within easy walking distance of one of our favorite restaurants, Shipwreck Landing. Parking on the East End can be iffy, so being able to walk to a good restaurant was a huge bonus for us.
The view over Coral Bay is amazing, especially in the morning. From our upper deck we saw turtles, Eagle Rays and, one time, a Nurse Shark cruising the waters below. Cliffhanger provides a hummingbird feeder and we brought two others plus a sugar feeder for Banana Quits; lots of action for quiet viewing from the decks. The neighborhood iguanas (in the trees to the left of the upper deck) were non-intrusive and photogenic.
We never used the satellite TV once, so can’t speak to that. The Internet connection was strong and important to those in our number who were still gainfully employed and needed to connect back home. Extras included beach chairs, coolers of varying sizes, a small washer/dryer combo which was handy for those of us staying two weeks and a cleaning person who did a great job preparing for a new week of guests.
One of the co-owners, Denise, was an excellent person to deal with right from our first enquiry. She answered all questions promptly and I think could be very helpful to first-timers (this was our sixteenth year on St. John). Her agent on island, Jared, was always available and got us settled in with no fuss, despite the fact that we arrived at different times.
Two thumbs up for Cliffhanger.
Our return once again to Cliffhanger was as special as was our first experience. All the glowing reviews of this fabulous property remain absolutely true! I have especially enjoyed working with Denise; I consider her my friend, even though we have yet to meet in person. This year, we appreciated the addition of the hummingbird feeder on the upper deck that attracted two species of hummingbirds and bananaquits, as well. We also enjoyed the NPS bird watchers' Friday morning walk around Francis Bay. Thanks to Jared's recommendation, we had a thoroughly enjoyable day with Fly Away Charters where Colin guided us to secret snorkeling spots we could never have found on our own. We will most certainly return to Cliffhanger and St. John!
