Overview

Portola Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5)

The Buzzard's Loft Apartment is an awesome one bedroom second level apartment with deck overlooking the Feather River, just outside of town. Landing bridge through the pine trees leads to the apartment. Has a very comfortable thick memory foam bed for your enjoyment and relaxation, and two Satellite flat-screen TVs. Also, free Wi-Fi available. The Buzzard's Loft is part of our old family home built by our parents over 60 years ago from lumber they salvaged as young adults dismantling Walker Mine, which was located north of Lake Davis.

***Newly finished (September 26, 2014) beautiful terrace for your enjoyment. Includes huge custom-built bench, above ground fire pit, picnic tables, chairs, sitting walls, and newly planted miniature, partially fenced, grove. Enjoy this beautiful terrace, which overlooks the Feather River with a view of Mount Elwell in the distance.***

The Buzzard's Roost Vacation Rentals sit on the Feather River; a great place for kids and dogs to explore. There are no fences between you and the river, so you have the ability to roam wherever you want!

If you're a train buff, the railroad tracks are up on the hill across the river. You have front row seats to watch the excitement that the trains bring to this area. As kids we grew up watching the trains and waving to them. The Railroad Museum is just a short drive into town.

Very easy access from the top of the driveway to the bike/walking path that leads into town. It is an easy walk or ride for anyone.

The Buzzard's Loft Apartment is clean and furnished with everything you need to enjoy your stay. ***July 15, 2014 I lowered the nightly rate by $29. I provide all the bedding (sheets, blankets, bedspread, pillows) and towels, but my customers make the beds***

The Buzzard's Roost Vacation Rentals are conveniently located, giving easy access to the many desirable destinations in this area while offering you the privacy and relaxation that you just can't get in a motel room, bed and breakfast, campsite, or RV space. We also have a very cute cabin available see #314548, and new for 2014 The Buzzard's House #562206, which is absolutely wonderful! Contact us for details.

About Glenda Herbert

I was born in Portola and raised with my two older brothers and sister on the property which is now 'The Buzzard's Roost.' I have been married to a great guy for almost 32 years and have two 'perfect' kids, a great son-in-law, and two wonderful granddaughters.

Glenda Herbert purchased this apartment in 2009

Why Glenda Herbert chose Portola

Years ago, my mom originally started and named 'The Buzzard's Roost' and after my parent's deaths we decided to purchase the family home and remodel 'The Buzzard's Roost' and get it going again.

What makes this apartment unique

'The Buzzard's Roost' is close to Highway 70 for easy access to all your destinations, but is also private with all the benefits of being on the Feather River.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Full blown apartment. Nice living room, full kitchen, large bedroom (comfy bed) window a/c in the bedroom, walk in closet and a store room. It has a deck with table and chair and a BBQ. Satellite TV in the living room and a in the bedroom. I can go on but you can't beat the price either.

Great people!

  • 5 of 5
Arriving the end of November, I had the bad luck to come into CA the same time as a nasty bit of winter weather. Glenda, the owner, kept me updated as to the state of the two roads into their property, and when it became clear we were not going to be able to get there due to ice and snow, very kindly refunded my check. With two daughters and grandchildren out that way, I will definitely keep them in mind for future trips. Good, honest folk!

Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at the Buzzards Roost for a few days after Christmas to relax and decompress- it was perfect. Glenda and her family keep the apartment very clean and orderly and were very easy to communicate with. We can't wait to visit again!

Best Birthday/Almost Christmas Get Away!!

  • 5 of 5
Thanks Glenda 4 being amazing accommodating & very easy to work with. Thank U for quick responses & making renting the Roost a breeze. Well worth it we loved it & CANT WAIT TO COME BACK!

The Buzzards Roost is amazing in & out. It has privacy but also very attentive hosts! We were greeted by Kelsha & Bill even though it was late snowin & freezin but there they were with great big smiles waiting to greet us upon our late arrival!

The Roost is beautiful! Well stocked kitchen, BBQ outside. Ample blankets towels pillows (The towels & bedding are better then any 5 star hotel any day any time & they dont smell like nasty bleach #justsayin). The bed is memory foam & the pillows are so comfy. Everything is comfortable handy clean & nicely decorated. We got lucky & got the X-Mas treatment with a fresh cut decorated X-Mas Tree in the living room. It was beautiful!

We arrived on the 21st for a My 25 Bday/PreChristmas get away. On SAT/22 (my Bday) upon waking up I found a text from Kelsha inviting my BF/Conan & I to breakfast which was great! We were joined by the guest of Grandpas Cabin (their other rental) & some missionary's & Bill & Kelshas children & their awesome pets. What a wonderful way to spend my birthday morning. My BF was convinced to play guitar, that was delightful! BF & I needed coffee so we left for a bit & upon our return Kelsha & her Daughter greeted me at our door cupcakes in hand to wish me a Happy Birthday. I was so touched. Thank you for making my b-day perfect!

The rest of our stay was great, got a chance to shovel snow, (Thank u for the loaner snow boots) There were snow ball fights snow bird/thing man & We just had a nice relaxing time together away from the city life. It was perfect! I HIGHLY recommend the BR & cant wait to return, but next time can we borrow a cat, we missed ours alot!! :D

If I could suggest anything, it would be coat hooks on doors, walls hooks above the heater in the BD, LR, in the winter its hard to dry wet clothes, so being able to hang things above the heater, or on doors would be nice! No other complaints at all! Maybe scissors too!

Thank you Glenda & Paul for the rental. Thank you Kelsha & Bill, kids, & pets for going above & beyond and making our vacation b-day something to always remember, everything was perfect, lots of snow and all! Kelsha and Bill are very helpful and nice!

FYI Bring your own ground coffee, there is a maker, no grinder! No oven either just convection oven, but thats ok it works great!

Not for the average sleeper

  • 2 of 5
Buzzard's roost is a very charming little apartment. It was perfect for our two small children and our golden retriever.....until night time. I read all the reviews before renting this place and no one mentioned that the train tracks are so close that it was impossible for both my husband and I to sleep. Both nights we were there were so loud. Everything was great the river, the apartment the kind service, but I think the trains need to be mentioned. They run all night long and the horns blow so loud it is startling. Portola is a major hub for trains to run through. So, yes if you are a train enthusiast and can sleep though a anything, the Buzzards Roost is great.

Owner's Response: Wow! You must have been upset to post a review a year later... (Your stay was August 5, 2011.) I guess none of my customers mentioned the trains because they weren't bothered by them. Someone mentioned a refrigerator that they felt was running too much during the night, but no train. Ha! Ha! I do mention in my advertising that The Roost is a perfect place to sit and watch the trains go by. (In fact, one of my customers said I should talk more of that for the train buffs...) Portola is a railroad town and anywhere you are you will hear the trains. And, unfortunately there is no schedule that I can give my customers to let them know when the trains will be going through. When you're waiting for one to come through it seems like forever before one actually does. At night, most of us sleep right through the sound of the passing trains. I'm glad you liked the apartment, sorry that the trains weren't your thing. Even though I do have it in my advertising, I will try to be more diligent about verbally mentioning the trains to my pending customers. --- Glenda

Amazing Vacation Rental and very affordable!!

  • 5 of 5
I just stopped in last minute without a reservation and the very nice owner was able to accomodate me, my son and my 2 dogs right on the spot!!! This place was simply amazing!! Well stocked with everything you need and very comfortable!! Bed is memory foam, blankets are soft fleece and pillows are feather! hardwood floors, 2 TVs with cable, internet, nice BBQ and huge patio, firepit, hammock on river, trails along river to enjoy with no people around!! very private, and clean!!! AC works great and if you bring your dogs the huge patio has a locking gate so your dogs cannot get out and can get plenty of room to roam around!!
I'd recommend this place to anybody wanting to go on a lil vacation without spending much!! and you still get all the amenities a more expensive place would offer!! I cant say enough good about this rental!! Thank you so much Glenda for your hospitality and accomodating us last minute, I really enjoyed my stay!!!:)
