I'm sorry it took me this long to realize this is the place to share accolades about this property and the owners! We had a lot of requirements for a vacation rental and Jeff & Loretta exceeded them all. We needed a place where my brother, who is disabled, could access not only the cabin, but direct water front with a stable dock because he wanted to fish. He also wanted some privacy from other vacationers as he struggles to get around. As if that weren't enough, I have a big ol' Labrador who wants to come with. Upon arrival we found Jeff & Loretta had made a lakefront vacation wonderland. We had not rented a "cabin" but a home. It was warm & inviting with every amenity I have at home and then some. We had a HUGE private yard with 200 feet of lakefront to ourselves flanked by wooded lots on either side of us. But don't let all the privacy fool you. The neighbors and the owners are friendly and accessible. And Jeff & Loretta thought of everything for you! The grill is ready and waiting for you, with a spare tank waiting in the wings. Firewood, kindling, and lighting materials are ready and waiting for the firepit. There are comfy chairs for hanging out and a picnic bench for outdoor dining, and a bench by the water for quiet reflection with breathtaking views to enjoy. The boat motor was charged and ready for us and I clearly overpacked, because the owners had a garage on site with everything for summer lake enjoyment...from fishing gear to games to pfd's to fun floaties and much more. There was a swing set for kids and kayaks for bigger kids...oh and let's not forget the private swim dock. If all this wasn't enough there were fabulous trails and reservoirs nearby, a 175 acre leash free Dog Park, and Mt. Washington is a beautiful day trip through country roads.
This is a must see for people looking to relax in a quiet country lake setting. I realize as I am writing this, that my review may increase interest and thereby limit available weeks for me in years to come...but Jeff and Loretta deserve such accolades as their family "cabin" is a lovely lake home that they generously share with the rest of us. Kudos to them!
This was our 2nd year @ the Lake. It was another great time, as we rested, recharged, and felt restored. We brought our shepherd this year, and he had a great time in the Lake and on the spacious property. We had some friends up, and they enjoyed their stays as well. Kayaking, watching the loon family, rabbits, birds, fish in the Lake...sitting on the deck and the dock. Last year we spent time out and about, this year with our dog, it was different - we cooked and ate nearly all of our meals at the house - so easy to work in the kitchen and with the grill. Thank you!
I stayed in the cottage with three other friends and my three dogs. We all had a WONDERFUL time. This cabin was the PERFECT quiet getaway that we all wanted. The view was breathtaking and unforgettable. Loretta provided everything that we needed. She was the perfect host. My dogs loved staying in the cabin so much that when we were leaving, one of them sat on the lawn, not wanting to leave that I had to carry her in the car. Even now that the stay is over, I still think about the wonderful time I had in the cabin that I can not wait to book it again!
My wife and I and our two shelties spent the past week (early May) and had a wonderful time. The entire area and particularly Shadow Lake are gorgeous this time of year, especially looking out the great picture windows facing the lake. The loons and the beaver spent quite a bit of time right at the end of our dock, and there were interesting birds everywhere.
The interior was super clean, attractive, and comfortable. The kitchen area is not large, but it is very well stocked -- in fact, I would say the entire cottage is well stocked with most anything you would need to enjoy yourself.
St. Johnsbury is only a short drive, and we found that it had everything we wanted, and we really liked the atmosphere of the place. Dog Mountain was a fun little trip, and everywhere, the scenery is stunning, but especially from the north end of the lake, looking south towards the White Mountains.
We really enjoyed our stay. The property was just as described, very clean and if you forgot anything, not to worry, it was there. It was so peaceful and we had perfect weather. We hiked the area, kayaked and totally relaxed. Our hosts were the best, they could not have been more helpful. They told us were to eat, let us borrow a kayak and made sure we had everything we needed. We highly recomend this property.
I have stayed at the cottage with two friends and three dogs and we all had a wonderful time. We only came for two full days, but we spend almost entire time at the cottage (had to drive to town for groceries and to visit Bishop's Ice Cream, which I highly recommend). The cottage and surrounding area has everything for a relaxing, fun-filled weekend. We had our breakfasts outside on the deck, relaxed with a good book on the dock, went swimming and kayaking, grilled some meat and veggies, and warmed up in the evening by the fire pit. The place is stocked with everything you need - from life jackets, firewood, games to a small, but excellent DVD library (we watched Caddyshack and Alone in the Wilderness). Loretta was an excellent host. We booked our trip very late (lucky for us there was a last-minute cancellation), and communication from Loretta was very prompt and detailed and she provided many tips once we got to the place (by the way, Mooselook Restaurant in Concord was excellent). The cottage is secluded. All the people we met were very friendly. The best part of our stay for me was relaxing by the lake-side; the worst part - the stay was too short. Definitely worth the long drive from NYC. I will gladly return in the future.
