Kyoto Townhome Rental Photos and Description
2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, 1 half bathroom, sleeps 8
This is a renovated traditional townhouse where you can experience the features and lifestyle of Kyo-Machiya, the original townhouses of Kyoto. The house has been preserved in its original state and now functions as an accommodation. Whilst keeping the traditional appearance of Kyo-Machiya such as lanterns, earth floor and open-timbered ceiling, the house has been converted into a comfortable area decorated with modern Japanese “Wa”-style design. Up to 8 people can stay at one time. Please enjoy the centuries-old taste and the traditional beauty of Kyo-Machiya as long as you would like.
The house is located within a walking distance from the Shijo-Karasuma Station, Kyoto’s new centre of bustle, and it’s in a convenient spot with easy access to all the sightseeing ites such as the Kyoto Station, Gion and Kawaramachi area, the Nijo Castle and the Kinkakuji Golden Temple.
The first floor:
The lighting fixtures give off a modern vibe, while the long, narrow kitchen, high open ceilings, which used to be used to ventilate smoke from the furnace, and Japanese garden offer a glimpse to the Japan of years past.
The second floor:
You can peer down to look at the first floor from the lattice openings, something unique to machiyas. Traditional beams line the ceilings of the bedroom allowing guests to experience an authentic machiya.
The glass paned bathroom is lined with black granite and cypress, allowing guests to relax in luxury.
The Japanese style garden lit by round lanterns harmoniously blend with the modern interior.
Kyoto machiyas illustrate old-fashioned Japanese residences, which appear small from the outside but extend far in the back. Because of their narrow but long design these residences are affectionately nicknamed “unagi no nedoko” or where eels sleep.
