For those that are looking for a tranquil vacation off the beaten path and far from the commercialized world then Curacao and Lagun are for you. The unit was great, the views and location were unbeatable. We cooked several dinners at home, ate breakfast on the patio each morning and ate out at the fantastic local resturants the rest of the time. By concensus of our kids (13 & 9) and my wife and I our favorite beaches were, in order: PortaMari, Cas Abou, Grote Knip, Seaquarium & Playa Lagun. You can't beat snorkling in Playa Lagun where we saw schools of fish, sea turtles, eels and stingrays. We do not dive, yet, but did snorkle every day. Our youngest is looking forward to the day when he can get his junior dive certification. For dining out our favorites, in order: Landhuis Mishi (a fantasitic locally owned restaurant), Daniel & Kura Hulanda Lodge.
If you are trying to decide between staying in Willemstad and up North, in our opinion, it is a no brainer to stay in Lagun or Westpunt near the best beaches, diving and restaurants. You definately need a car. Roads in the country are easy to navigate but Willemstad is a bit more of a challenge. Get a map from Hertz, even if you rent from somewhere else, as it has all the KFC, Pizza Hut, Subway and Gas Stations marked. They make great landmarks in the absence of road signs.
The summary, of the 50 or so countries I have visited for work or play over the years Curacao easily ranks in the top 5. We will be back and Lagun is where we will stay.
