Great location!

I took my son to attend Berkeley's overnight stay program for accepted students and I am so glad to have found this place! Being from out of state and totally new to Berkeley, I wanted a safe, clean, quiet, comfortable and convenient place for our 5-night stay. This place met all my needs and exceeded our expectations in terms of convenience. We enjoyed walking to campus and surrounding areas. Had a lot of fun checking out the nearby restaurants and cafes. We even took the BART one day to SFO. James, the owner, is a very kind and gracious person, and gave us a ride to the nearest station so we could take the BART to SFO airport on our check out day. I highly recommend this place. Thank you, James!

Great location!

We just returned from over a week at this property. The house is older, in a charming neighborhood, easily walkable to the shops in Elmwood and less than a mile from the southern end of the UC Berkeley campus. The apartment is a short walk (probably a mile) from the BART station in Rockridge. There are also AC transit busses running along College Ave. We were in Berkeley for our son's graduation and the apartment worked well for our stay. The neighborhood is safe and very quiet at night. The internet in the apartment was reliable and fast. The listing was well described but we were surprised at the layout of the apartment which is train car style. You walk into a small TV room with a couch, then into the bedroom, then into the bathroom and then into the kitchen. So to get to the kitchen you have to go through the bathroom. Overall, this was Ok for us but could be inconvenient. The kitchen and bathroom are adequate, but the tile and grout in the shower are older. The apartment was very clean. The mattress/pillows (firm but comfortable) and bed linens are newer and there were plenty of newer towels. The owner met us at the apartment on arrival and was very personable. We had no issues during our stay but he lives upstairs so we knew he would be easily accessible. There was off street parking available in the driveway, which was great. We recommend the Elmwood Cafe for coffee, breakfast and lunch and also had very nice meals at Rick and Ann's (great breakfast), the Wood Tavern (terrific dinner), Gregoire (the best takeout ever), Julia's (historic Berkeley City Club, good meal, spotty service), Zachary's (odd but delicious pizza), Venus and La Note (for breakfast, but we liked Venus better than La Note!), La Farine (for extraordinary baked goods, especially their fruit tarts and the local favorites - swiss twinkies and morning buns), Great China (fantastic Chinese food), and Chez Panisse, of course! We did not get to Sliver or the Cheeseboard or Artichoke on this trip, but can recommend all for pizza. The Berkeley farmers market (Saturdays) is incredible as is the Berkeley Bowl. In Berkeley, we went to the top of the Campanile on the UC Berkeley campus and heard the bell concert (fantastic), went to the Rose Garden and also drove up Grizzly Peak Road for the views. If we return to the area, we would definitely consider staying at this property again.

visit for Cal graduation

This is a very nice place - quiet and safe part of town, but close to amenities (bakery, etc) and 15-20 minute walk to Cal-Berkeley campus. Furnishings are nice, and the owner provided breakfast fixings so it's essentially a bed and breakfast. Owner lives next door and is quiet but very friendly.

Great place!! You could not have a more strategic location to take in the beauty that is the Elmwood District of Berkeley. The University is within walking/biking distance. The Claremont Hotel is a few blocks east, while the wonderfully scaled commercial district, on College Ave, is right around the corner. Nabolom Bakery,Mediterranean Restaurant, Elmwood Theater, Elmwood Cafe, the list is endless; yet you are far enough away(a minutes walk+/-),from all these wonderful amenities, that serenity, peace & quiet envelop this tranquil setting. A huge old redwood tree marks the unit's ground level entry.Three steps put you on the spacious entry porch. Easy well located off street parking. Once you arrive there is no need to set foot in your car again, until your trip is over. We would definitely stay here again. On top of all this the owner is a very nice guy. The place was very clean, well lit, and tastefully put together. The appliances include W/D, heaters, wifi, expresso machine, blender, microwave the list goes on. Well stocked with fairly recent New Yorker magazines as well, just in case you forgot your reading material.

Location IS Everything!

My daughter and I stayed in this flat a few months ago. We needed a quiet place to stay while in town for a family wedding at the Clairmont Hotel. We stayed 3 days, 2 nights, and had a wonderful time using the flat as our base for shopping in San Francisco, running around on College Avenue for the wedding, and walking to the hotel for the rehearsal dinner and the reception. The ad is correct—you don’t need a car to get around! The flat is perfect for 1 or 2 people, even 3 because there’s a pull out sofa bed in the small entryway “living room”. Doors separate each room from the next, allowing for quiet reading and privacy from one’s party. The kitchen is well equipped (there’s even an Espresso Maker) and I enjoyed the fresh Peet’s Coffee that James left for us in a basket with a good bottle of Wine and other treats. The flat is super cute, old and charming. It was immaculate, inviting, and a pleasure to stay there. Hotel choices in Berkeley, we found, range from awful to super expensive. This was just right for us. I promised James a review, and here it is, as I book the flat for a return visit in early 2013.

Comfortable & sweet in a fabulous location

Comfortable & sweet in a fabulous location

My mom and I stayed here while visiting friends and family in the Bay Area, and it was perfect for us! It's cute, clean, quaint and so much better than a hotel. To give some perspective, the main picture shows the front (Dutch) door to the flat on the left end of the front porch, and the flat itself is arranged in a shotgun manner. The location was amazing - within very easy walking distance of College Ave (great food - Elm Wood Cafe, Shen Hua, Mediternee are fantastic; shopping, coffee, necessities, etc) and a little longer walk to Rockridge. The convertible couch/bed was as comfortable as pull out sofas can be (a little springy, but overall, fine), and the main bedroom bed was super firm, but really comfortable. Plenty of dresser and closet space, nice desk and fast Wifi to boot. The bathroom was spacious for such a small place, and the two of us had plenty of room. I could see 3-4 people staying here for a visit, if they really like each other. The kitchen was just enough, adequately stocked with flat ware, etc. James even provided a small gift basket for our arrival with treats and coffee. We ended up needing to leave a day early, and James was very accommodating. It was a great stay, and we'll certainly be back! Thanks, James!
