If you are looking for the true Vermont experience, a 4 mile scenic bike ride to Kingdom Trails, this place is for you. The property is located on top of 40 acres, with views of Vermont's green mountains in all directions and not a road in sight. The house is a artisan's dream, with built-in cherry cabinets, hardwood floors and concrete counter tops. Everything you could possibly need is here for a perfect Vermont vacation; wood stove, washer and dryer, fire pit, well appointed kitchen, trails to hike and snowshoe and a small cabin in the woods (with it's own woodstove). Bike or drive 5 miles on a scenic dirt road to East Burke Village, surrounded by skiing and mountain biking trails. Or jump in your car and head out on the pavement to beautiful Lake Willoughby. Enjoy some veggies from the organic garden. If you're an artist, or just love beautiful places, there are plenty of gardens and stonewalls to sketch, paint or photograph, and some big trees to dream under.

My husband, and sculptor, David Tanych and I (Meryl Lebowitz) have been working on this property for the past 10 years. We designed and built all of the buildings, which include an art studio, woodworking shop, metal studio and house.

I consider this compound our finest collaboration. We love having people connect with the property and encourage you to feel creative here! Bring cameras, sketch pads, notebooks...or just chill. It's fun to walk the trails and check out David's ponds at the bottom of our hill.

Sorry, no pets allowed.

About Meryl Lebowitz

I am an oil painter, who has been working as an artist for 30 years. David is a woodworker, and metal artist. Together we have collaborated on our property for 11 years. Recently, we have been spending our winters in California, perusing our art careers, returning to Vermont in time to plant the garden.

Why Meryl Lebowitz chose Burke

We bought this property with a vision of making it into a compound that would inspire creativity. It was a blank canvas with an incredible vista, except for the acres of clear-cut forest, which made it look as if a bomb had been dropped. First we cleaned up the land, which took a year, David built a barn to house our equipment on the second year, I started the perennial gardens, and together with our son, we began building the stone walls. The third year, my studio and David's woodshop were built, we then were able to work up here, while we lived off site. We began the house the following year, and David had the opportunity to build a structure with a rounded wall (the front wall of our house)....We lived in my studio for 6 months. Our first project in the house was an apartment, complete with David's beautiful wood cabinets and concrete counter tops. We lived there while we began working on the rest of our home. Hello Meryl,
I write to you with much happiness. We were the fortunate family that stayed in your apartment a few weeks ago. We were the family that got our mini van stuck in your driveway and your husband David and another neighbor helped us out. Many thanks to David as we didn't get a chance to say good bye and thank him in person. I did want to tell you how much my husband and three kids thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your property. The joy in the kids' face when they found the sled to use on your hill was priceless. We went into that weekend having looked at a property for sale down the road closer to Burke mountain on Ridge Road (red post and beam). Trying to decide if we really wanted to invest in a second home was our primary reason for taking the weekend to be up there. Your property and apartment was beyond imaginable. Looking at the views, watching the kids explore the area and driving and running on Ridge Road is what made us decide to put an offer on that house! We now have a signed contract and are really looking forward to this summer and many more seasons in Kirby. I thank you for opening up your place which allowed us to experience the beauty that Kirby has to offer. I look at the photos you have of the property in the summer and can't even believe how beautiful it all is with the flowers and colors. The deep snow was all we saw and I thought that was beautiful! Your art work around the apartment was magnificent and we all had fun finding the sculptures on the property!
My kids (ages 12, 10 and 8) hope to come back and visit this summer and meet back up with a friend they made, Kenai (I think that is his name), the chocolate lab from the neighbors house. He was such a great dog!

the listing said sleeps 6 but pictures showed only 2 bedrooms. When I asked about this I was told there was a 3rd bedroom which didn't happen to be true. In my case I would not have chosen to stay based on our needs. A little awkward....
Also,I think it is important that traveler knows the owners are upstairs not just local or however it was explained.
The owners were lovely and helpful, the place very clean. I would recommend.
Owner's Response: So sorry that there was confusion about having a 3rd bedroom, I'll make sure that it's listed as a 2 bedroom apartment, and that we are occasionally living above. Just perfect

We stayed at this wonderful cottage for 4 quiet and enjoyable days.

The place was just perfect for us (a couple + 3 young kids), beautifully and warmly decorated. We had a wonderful time. The cottage itself is very comfortable, with a beautiful view of the Green Mountains out back; it's extremely tranquil and quiet, yet close to Lake Willoughby. The owners are extremely friendly and accommodating. If you're looking for a restorative Vermont retreat, this is it!

This house is just as beautiful as the pictures. Perfect location, amazing views, beautiful gardens and very nice owners. This house beat all of our expectations! We rented it for a biking getaway with 1 other couple. This house could not have been more perfect. We couldn't be happier and we look forward to going back. Thank you Dave, Meryl and Lyle.

This is truly a majestic place – the peace and solitude that this mountaintop escape provides leaves me wanting to return. The apartment was VERY comfortably furnished, the views of the surrounding mountains/valley were exceptional and the owners were incredibly welcoming (many thanks to Meryl, David and Lyle for their hospitality). There are winding trails to explore during the day, mesmerizing sunsets to enjoy in the evening and incredible stargazing opportunities at night – definitely looking forward to going back!
