Onancock Estate Rental Photos and Description

Farmhouse 3 bedrooms, Cottage 3 bedrooms, 6 Bathrooms, Sleeps 12+

Sitting at the end of a long white clam shell driveway, this idyllic retreat nestles close to the Chesapeake Shore.

A classic Eastern Shore farmhouse, first mentioned in historical records of 1654 as part of the original Jamestown colony, it has been well maintained over the centuries and lovingly restored in recent years.

The accommodation comprises the Farmhouse and the Cottage - fifty yards apart - together they provide six bedrooms with six bathrooms and can very comfortably accommodate twelve plus.

The Farmhouse features two spacious living rooms winged with a screened porch opening to the long vistas of the Onancock River and Finney's Creek. There are three bedrooms arranged as a master suite with king size bed, a middle room with two twins and the over-kitchen bedroom with two doubles. There is a total of four bathrooms plus outside shower. A fully equipped kitchen opens onto the deck and features a picture window seat dining area and center island and bar stools.

The cozy Cottage has it's own sun porch and a lovely deck that overlooks the creek, along with a comfortable living room and three bedrooms - arranged as a master double bedroom and two twins upstairs with shared bathroom, and another two twin bedroom downstairs with it's own bathroom. The cottage also has a fully equipped kitchen which opens onto the deck.

In this tranquil location there is an endless range of activities to be enjoyed. Swimming, kayaking, boating, fishing or try your hand at crabbing off the thirty foot dock.

It is an area of outstanding natural beauty where wildlife abounds and there are always flowers in bloom whatever the season - the grounds are carefully maintained and include vegetable, herb and flower gardens.

The Farmhouse and Cottage offer a vacation that gives the very best that the Eastern Shore has to offer. Modern facilities in a landscape that has not changed in hundreds of years and in which you can truly relax and enjoy your life.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a lovely time at your place. It is a gracious and interesting place both inside and out. I still have visions of the beach trees framing the river, the river often dotted with swimmers and kayakers from our group. I have a memory of my 90 year old mother swinging in the rope swing. The swing in itself brought back memories, the give and tug of a rope swing on a tree branch has a rhythm unmatched by metal contrivances. I can say so much more. For one thing, your kitchen worked so well for our large group and the massive amount of cooking and baking that went on. And the crepe myrtle drive! We biked, kayaked, swam went to Tangiers Island and Assateague, celebrated a 90th birthday, a 20th birthday, a former wedding that still needed a cake and just general being alive in beauty.

New Year's Stay

  • of 5

The house was chilly when we arrived but warmed up when the caretaker brought us more electric heaters for the big house. Beautiful views and interesting books, family pictures and "what nots" around the house. We had a delicious dinner our first night at Mallards in Onancock. We cooked in for the rest of our stay and the kitchen has all the things we needed. The wind was favorable for a bon fire on two nights. Saw lots of stars in the winter sky! Very beautiful.

We lucked out with the weather. Beautiful days and chilly nights.

We absolutely fell in love with Onancock. The town has gourmet restaurants and stores, a Saturday fresh air market, a great theater, a wonderful marina and the friendliest folks. Everywhere we went in town people would say hello. Even the police officer in town stopped to talk and tell us about the town. I felt like we were in Mayberry on the water.

This home is a historic gem. We played on the water every day, all day and in the evenings we sat and enjoyed the amazing breezes and sunset over the water. I took my morning coffee to the dock every day and watched the sunrise.

The owner really worked with us. We had a challenge with air conditioners and 2 new ones were delivered the same day. We really appreciated this. Thank you!

All we would say is that you understand that this is an historic home dating to the 1700's Treat it with great care and understand that on the bay there will be some mosquitos. Bring your bug spray. If you can visit when planning that is great. :)

We couldn't have asked for a more wonderfully equipped, comfortable and charming getaway home on the Eastern Shore. We went as a group of 10 friends looking to get away from busy DC living for Memorial Day weekend and found just what we wanted at Tucker's property. We passed the days swimming off the dock, kayaking and sailboating, tossing in crab cages (we only caught two but still fun), reading in the shade or lounge chairs on the screened in porch, etc. In the evenings we cooked big meals in the fully equipped kitchen/on the small charcoal grill, star gazed, went for night swims or browsed the immense family library. We were so fully entertained on site that no one wanted to leave for outside adventures. Town is about 15 minutes away which made food runs to the grocery store easy. A few things to note for anyone considering renting. As other reviewers have pointed out, the water in the house runs a bit rusty, however, the fridge has a water filter so no one in our group was bothered. The water off the dock was pretty shallow (about waist deep) and there is a muddy bottom, some people found it icky, but no problem in my book. The larger electric grill has died so only the charcoal was available. Fishing poles weren't in the best condition but we got one working alright. Otherwise the property lacks nothing and you'll lose yourself in this idyllic historical family home.

An idyllic spot on the Onancock Creek

We selected this property for the water and privacy and were not disappointed. We appreciated the limited access to technology and the slower pace of the eastern shore. The house is comfortable and relaxed but we spent most of our time outdoors where the night sky is magnificent. Take your bug spray as the ticks, flies and mosquitoes are abundant. The creek is perfect for kayaking and bird watching and there are plenty of charming small towns to explore.

We would recommend!

History-filled, Secluded & Picturesque Memorial Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We rented Tucker's family property for the long Memorial Day weekend in 2012. We were a group of 12 young professionals in the DC area.

Mattapany simply exudes history as you approach the house from the long, tree lined driveway. It's a spectacular piece of land and you feel like you've traveled back in time as you approach the house.

The house itself is a relic of history. It's by no means "luxurious", but it's filled to the brim with interesting artwork, antiques, a library of old books, tchotchkes, games, and sentimental items from Tucker's family. It's the type of house that you could get lost in for days, as you explore it's nooks and crannies. Tucker was more than happy to encourage us to explore the property and regale with stories about particular items and his family's history with the property.

We found the house to be furnished quite comfortably. Lots of blankets, towels, pillows, and a fully stocked kitchen. The covered outdoor porch was great for big group dinners at sunset. We also had a bonfire one night in the waterfront field next to the house.

In terms of activities, we spent a lot of time on the wonderful dock that extends from the property. The house comes with a kayak and other after toys, which we made us of. There are also crab traps; unfortunately we didn't cach much but you migh have more success at other times of year.

In all, Mattapany is one of the best properties I've ever rented. It had everything I want: an interesting house, lots of privacy, easy access to swimming and a very good value for my money. I will definitely be renting this property again at some point in the future and think its a great property for groups of friends, families with kids, or a family reunion.

The downsides to the property: (1.) there are lots of mosquitoes here on the Chespeake. Be prepared with plenty of bug spray, citronella candles, etc.(2.) The water from the house is well water. It can be a little smelly and it will also cause some discoloration of your clothing, if you rinse out a bathing suit in the sink or use a dark towel to dry off after showering. Be sure to use the towels provided with the property, instead of your own from home.

In all, the downsides are those to be expected when renting a historic, secluded property on the waterfront. The views and historic character of he estate more than make up for the downsides!!!

Stayed here several times and loved it. Great house for entertaining. Beautiful setting and classic eastern shore house, functional but not fancy. Private and quiet. Hope to come back again soon. Eric and Charlene
