An amazing retreat

We just spent a long weekend at Pop Castle, after I had spent some time there last fall with a group of college friends. We had 4 adults and 6 kids, ages 12-17, and we could have housed several more comfortably. There have been some recent bathroom renovations and the results are beautiful. The house is furnished in a way that makes you feel as though you are living in a beautiful plantation house, but it's all very comfortable. The grounds and outbuildings, with rope swings, a basketball court, ping-pong, and the dock and beach, are enough to keep children entertained for days.
We were concerned that the chilly weather would dampen the experience, but we sat around the fire pit at night and watched the sun set over the river...the view is simply unbelievable. The kitchen is well-stocked and we were able to eat most of our meals at the house, although we did enjoy a dinner at nearby Bentley's Grille in White Stone.
For runners, there are plenty of beautiful country lanes around, and the kids enjoyed biking on the almost traffic-free roads. On my first morning run, I spotted a bald eagle's nest (gigantic!) just down the road, and we returned daily to watch the eagle roaming overhead.
For those who like inside activities, there is an amazing book collection that goes far beyond the usual rental-cottage paperbacks, plus a large DVD selection. There are two large TVs with full access to cable, which pleased my husband who was anxious about watching the Final Four, and we were able to watch a new movie On Demand as well. The owners were also kind enough to let us bring our dog when, at the last minute, we couldn't find a dog-sitter.
We're all anxious to return to Pop Castle are hoping to book a fall visit. It's really an unbelievable place that, upon reflection, really seems too good to be true. But it's even better than it looks in the website pictures.
