Photos and Description of the White Stone Beach vacation house rental
House, 6 Bedrooms, 5 Baths (Sleeps 12-16)

Crossing the bridge into the town of White Stone you arrive at this magnificent estate on the Rappahannock River. ''Pop Castle'' is a property entrenched in civil war history. It is on the National Registry of Historic Homes and a registered Virginia Historic Landmark.

This 1855 house, flanked by two majestic Oak trees overlooking the two-mile wide Rappahannock River, offers expansive lawns, towering trees and a long sandy beach. Sit out on the screened porch and watch the osprey and the resident eagle go after their daily catch while the dolphins swim by. Relax in the hammock on the sandy shores of the river or go swimming, fishing, or crabbing off the 30 foot deck (two crab pots are available). This five bedroom historic home on twelve exquisite acres with hundred year old magnolias and oaks is fully furnished and equipped with WiFi, cable, bikes, outdoor games and a ping pong table.

With the wood paneled living room with fireplace, comfortable TV room with fireplace, formal dining room with fireplace, sunroom with a large bay window overlooking the river, a large and bright kitchen with adjoining windowed garden/laundry room, and a spectacular 50 foot long porch opening directly to the wide treed lawn and the river, your family and friends will have plenty of space to share your valued time together. On the second floor, five bedrooms, three with fireplaces, offer ample sleeping space (although if more is needed, the first floor sunroom and TV room with adjoining full bathrooms can easily be converted into bedrooms using our queen airbeds).

Vacation homes abound, but none other offers such serenity and natural beauty, while allowing you to stay in a house shelled by Union gunboats in 1861 or on the land raided by the British fleet during the War of 1812.

The property includes historic outbuildings, including a smoke house and granary from the 1850s and an enormous work shed housing some of the cannonballs uncovered on the property.

Come take off your shoes and relax in this historic estate on the Rappahannock River, one mile from the Chesapeake Bay. Above all, come sit on the deck and experience a sunset as you have never seen it before, and be a part of history.

An amazing retreat

Submitted: April 7, 2013 Stayed: April 2013
We just spent a long weekend at Pop Castle, after I had spent some time there last fall with a group of college friends. We had 4 adults and 6 kids, ages 12-17, and we could have housed several more comfortably. There have been some recent bathroom renovations and the results are beautiful. The house is furnished in a way that makes you feel as though you are living in a beautiful plantation house, but it's all very comfortable. The grounds and outbuildings, with rope swings, a basketball court, ping-pong, and the dock and beach, are enough to keep children entertained for days.

We were concerned that the chilly weather would dampen the experience, but we sat around the fire pit at night and watched the sun set over the river...the view is simply unbelievable. The kitchen is well-stocked and we were able to eat most of our meals at the house, although we did enjoy a dinner at nearby Bentley's Grille in White Stone.

For runners, there are plenty of beautiful country lanes around, and the kids enjoyed biking on the almost traffic-free roads. On my first morning run, I spotted a bald eagle's nest (gigantic!) just down the road, and we returned daily to watch the eagle roaming overhead.

For those who like inside activities, there is an amazing book collection that goes far beyond the usual rental-cottage paperbacks, plus a large DVD selection. There are two large TVs with full access to cable, which pleased my husband who was anxious about watching the Final Four, and we were able to watch a new movie On Demand as well. The owners were also kind enough to let us bring our dog when, at the last minute, we couldn't find a dog-sitter.

We're all anxious to return to Pop Castle are hoping to book a fall visit. It's really an unbelievable place that, upon reflection, really seems too good to be true. But it's even better than it looks in the website pictures.

An experience you will never forget

This is a must visit property. Listing is accurate, photos are good but not representative of the wonderful charm and comfort that this home affords its visitors. The home and grounds are meticulously maintained and the owner is engaging, honest helpful and genuinely interested in your experience. If you are considering this home for a week or weekend, you absolutely must choose it. The bedrooms are spacious, linens are high quality, kitchen wonderfully stocked with dishes appliances and utensils, dining room spacious and inviting, and family living room and den well furnished and truly comfortable. The ambiance and atmosphere can be anything you want it to be from a vibrant, bustling family and friend filled home to a genteel, inviting, quiet, comfortable and comforting getaway. If you're getting married, trying to reconnect or celebrating life, this is the right place. Do not be deceived by its location. In every direction there are charming towns just a short drive away with delectable dining opportunities. The spacious grounds afford any outdoor opportunity you wish. The home has a long river frontage and private dock, so if you want to be part of the river or admire it from an easy chair, it is your choice. I cannot say enough good things about our experience at Pop Castle. Don't just rely on vrbo. You can google this property and learn much about its history and charm. Oh, and I should have mentioned that the owner was very friendly toward our dog when we inquired about bringing him with us. That being said, there is absolutely no evidence of pet damage or accidents, so this owner must be selective in their consideration of pets. One more thing - wifi connection and television usage are reliable. When you are making your vacationing decision, one thing is certain. You will never be sorry you chose this place. Conversely, you certainly could be sorry you didn't. I know you will love the place as much as we did.

Amazing Stay

It was a beautiful drive entering through the property gates...so amazing - the property is a real gem. Our children had a wonderful time swimming off the beach. Everything is clean and well maintained. The pictures provide an accurate representation. We used the "River Market" in White Stone and their service and catered food was fantastic. We also enjoyed going by "The Farm" Boutique also located in White Stone and picking up some unique and beautiful items. The property owners were great to work with and immediately available if needed. We hope we can return again some day.

Magical wedding on the river

5 of 5
Submitted: October 3, 2012 Stayed: September 2012
My husband and I got married at Pop Castle only 3 weeks ago, and we look back and can't believe how lucky we were to have the most beautiful place in the world to start our life together and enjoy our family and friends.

Every memory we have was enhanced by the amazing setting of Pop Castle. Memories of brunch on the dock, splashing in the water with friends and family, or looking out from one of the many windows onto the beautiful view just moments before I walked down the aisle. And then collapsing in exhaused happiness on the comfortable porch the morning after! We saw dolphins in the morning, and Bald Eagles flying over in the afternoons. Our guests to the wedding event told us it was the best wedding they had ever been to because there were so many things to do and places to explore, most of which were just provided by the property and its wonderful owners: cornhole in the yard, swinging on the tree swing underneath the most magnificant oaks, or watching the sunset from the beach area and enjoying s'mores over the fire pit.

Pop Castle was a magical place for us to get married, and for our friends and family to see why we love the Northern Neck. It catches the essence of the place so well, and creates a place where you can be active, or relax and enjoy your surroundings.

The owners of Pop Castle were so helpful and communicative throughout the whole process, answering all our questions quickly and kindly. THe house was extremely well-kept and maintained, yet always felt homey and comfortable. We felt like the minute we walked through the door, it felt like "home" just for us, for the weekend.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful home and its history with others so that everyone can gain the same appreciation and love for it that we have! We cannot wait to plan a stay again in the future!

We had a wonderful time. The view of the river from the back porch was beautiful. The house is very comfortable, well equipped, easily accommodated all 7 of us. And the setting, overlooking the river and surrounded by beautiful, huge old oak trees, can't be beat.
