White Stone Beach House Rental Photos and Description

House, 6 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 5 Baths, (Sleeps 12-16)

Crossing the bridge into the town of White Stone you arrive at this magnificent estate on the Rappahannock River. 'Pop Castle' is a property entrenched in civil war history. It is on the National Registry of Historic Homes and a registered Virginia Historic Landmark.

This 1855 house, flanked by two majestic Oak trees overlooking the two-mile wide Rappahannock River, offers expansive lawns, towering trees and a long sandy beach. Sit out on the screened porch and watch the osprey and the resident eagle go after their daily catch while the dolphins swim by. Relax in the hammock on the sandy shores of the river or go swimming, fishing, or crabbing off the 30 foot deck (two crab pots are available). This five bedroom historic home on twelve exquisite acres with hundred year old magnolias and oaks is fully furnished and equipped with WiFi, cable, bikes, outdoor games and a ping pong table.

With the wood paneled living room with fireplace, comfortable TV room with fireplace, formal dining room with fireplace, sunroom with a large bay window overlooking the river, a large and bright kitchen with adjoining windowed garden/laundry room, and a spectacular 50 foot long porch opening directly to the wide treed lawn and the river, your family and friends will have plenty of space to share your valued time together. On the second floor, five bedrooms, three with fireplaces, offer ample sleeping space (although if more is needed, the first floor sunroom and TV room with adjoining full bathrooms can easily be converted into bedrooms using our queen airbeds).

Vacation homes abound, but none other offers such serenity and natural beauty, while allowing you to stay in a house shelled by Union gunboats in 1861 or on the land raided by the British fleet during the War of 1812. The property includes historic outbuildings, including a smoke house and granary from the 1850s and an enormous work shed housing some of the cannonballs uncovered on the property.

Come take off your shoes and relax in this historic estate on the Rappahannock River, one mile from the Chesapeake Bay. Above all, come sit on the deck and experience a sunset as you have never seen it before, and be a part of history.

Best house rental ever

  • 5 of 5

We were a party from England of 6 adults and 5 children visiting Virginia for my nieces wedding at Tides Inn.

Pop Castle was perfect for us all . It was just like a visit to a friends house with everything you want in place.

We hosted an English tea party for the wedding guests , many of whom had come from Portland Oregon.

All of us have taken away wonderful memories of a comfortable family house with great views.

The swing will be remembered by children of all ages .

Thank you for sharing your home and making these memories possible

A Unique Opportunity

  • 5 of 5

It is truly a unique opportunity to be able to stay at historic and beautiful Pop Castle. Our family of seven adults and 5 children under age 5 stayed here for a week in June. The first night, as I tucked one of the little grandchildren into her bed, she whispered in my ear, "I love this house". Two months later, back in her hometown, hardly a day goes by when she doesn't talk about the "River House". We were guests in a private home, without the owners hovering nearby! The kitchen was fully stocked with every pot, pan, spice, condiment, basket, bowl, utensil you could possibly need. As a family of cooks, we found there was everything we needed to create a feast or a picnic. Here's a rundown of all that we did and used on-site, in one week's stay: kayaked, cooked oysters out on grill, played croquet, swung from tree swing, caught crabs in pot off of dock, watched fireworks on July 4 from the dock, played games and cards, read, swam in river, dug in sand, played ball on the thick, lush lawn, walked, rode bikes, cooked out 3 lb. sirloin steak which we bought at market 5 min. from house, basketball, ping pong, drinks every evening under the huge oak trees, watched sunrises and sunsets, heard the rain on the roof, lived on the screened porch, watched movies, used instant and fast wifi, walked 2-3 miles safely on private roads, fished, played with doll house in kids' room, puzzles, ate well and slept soundly. The history of the house is fascinating and I highly recommend that you read everything you can find onsite about the house and property; let your imagination run free. While the house is old, it is beautifully restored, furnished, landscaped and well maintained. Bring very little as the property has everything you'll need, including hundreds of books and games for adults and children. The three villages of White Stone, Kilmarnock and Irvington are 5-20 min. drive and offer groceries, gas, propane, butcher, market, shops, and restaurants, but we didn't want to leave the property. As a change of pace, one family with kids found the nearby schools and churchyards that had climbing and swinging apparatus and took off for those a few mornings. Granddad, son and 5 yr. old grandson rented a fishing boat with captain and enjoyed a successful fishing expedition. The owner is responsive, personable, and thoughtful. I can testify to a fantastic family vacation and wholeheartedly recommend Pop Castle for any reunion, wedding, party, or family vacation.

Our Perfect Wedding at Pop Castle

  • 5 of 5

When we decided to get married on the river, I immediately started searching for a venue on the Northern Neck that was large enough to host a sizable wedding (150+) and that would allow lots of friends/family to stay on site with us. As soon as I stumbled across this listing on VRBO, we knew that Pop Castle was special. After visiting the property - we were firm believers that there was no where else we could picture our wedding day.

The owners (Walid and his wife) are incredibly responsive, reassuring, and generous. They were very supportive about us hosting our wedding at their home and answered all questions within hours, allowed us multiple last minute visits to the site to plan details, and even rescheduled the lawn care to occur in order to best meet our needs the weekend of the wedding.

The property is immaculately landscaped and the interior has beautiful details and expansive rooms. There are lots of bedrooms and sleeping spaces, we were able to host both sides of our family for several days leading up to the event and almost our entire large bridal party Friday and Saturday night. The screened in porch was even able to accommodate our 48 person rehearsal dinner! By the day of the wedding, the house felt like home.

Highlights: watching all of our guests enjoy the tree swing and taking strolls down along the dock, the 2 monumental oak trees which framed our vows, the MAGNOLIA TREES which were in spectacular bloom, watching dolphins play from the dock, having so many friends and family in the kitchen cooking and preparing large meals together, introducing our loved ones to this place which we've fallen in love with.

We had so many guests at the wedding complement the house, the yard, the view, and ask where we found such a great venue. I would (and WILL!) recommend Pop Castle to anyone interested in vacationing - or better yet, getting married! - in this area. Additionally, our guests had some good options for restaurants (we liked Nate's Trick Dog Cafe, Willabys, and the Local) and wineries to explore during the weekend. Personally, however, I was in such paradise at Pop Castle I was perfectly content not leaving the property the entire 5 days I was there. We hope to return to Pop Castle with groups of friends and family again over the years!

Best river house ever!

  • 5 of 5

My family of four has just returned from a spring break trip to Pop Castle. We had our two children plus 5 of their friends...7 teenagers in all, and we could have fit more, as my daughter pointed out.

This was my third trip to Pop Castle, after first having visited with college girlfriends. The house itself is amazing, both historic and yet comfortable at the same time, with all modern conveniences. There was plenty of space for all of us to spread out, from a sunny sitting room to a comfortable TV area, plus spacious bedrooms for all (and more than enough full bathrooms, which is something you don't always find, especially in old homes). Of course we spent much of our time on the huge glassed-in porch, eating all of our meals there as we took in the spectacular view.

The kids were never bored, despite our requirement that they leave all gaming systems at home. They played croquet and cornhole, sat on the dock, swam in the river, pushed each other on the swing, played ping-pong and basketball, watched a movie or two from the extensive DVD collection, and roasted marshmallows at the fire-pit overlooking the river. The grounds are so extensive that they really never wanted to leave except for the occasional run or bike ride. The kitchen was well stocked, and we ate all meals except one at the house.

I've always thought that "going to the river" was for boat people, but we don't have a boat, nor did we need one at Pop Castle. It was just the right blend of entertaining and relaxing; I think my blood pressure dropped 10 points as I had the first glass of wine while gazing at the river. Staying there is a truly unique experience, and one that can't truly be appreciated until you're gazing at that beautiful river view with the one-of-a-kind house at your back. We'll be back again for sure.

Wonderful Family Gathering

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful family gathering at Pop Castle - Pop Castle was a magnificent setting for all of us to gather and spend time together as we are living in an arc from Atlanta to Ocean City, MD. It was even more special for our family as our grandparents lived here for ten years and our mothers were both married here. The home was impeccable, the kitchen was well stocked, and there were many different rooms and spaces where we could gather, catch up, eat, drink and tell stories. The home was very comfortable for our 12 adults and 4 children ranging in age from 2 to 13. We visited White Stone and Kilmarnock to poke around the shops, golfed at Golden Eagle and visited Christ Church (highly recommended). Plenty of activities at Pop Castle and even more if you want to venture out. We took morning walks, had coffee on the porch and looked at the ever-changing Rappahannock River. On the last night we ate at Merroir, a seafood restaurant in Topping, across the river. Exquisite food (although small plates, so not enough for growing teen-aged boys!) . We thank the Ramadans for being responsive, answering our questions and making it possible for us to enjoy a wonderful weekend together. We hope to return in the coming years and recommend Pop Castle to anyone who enjoys a beautiful setting, gracious surroundings and a peaceful atmosphere.

Cuddling up with history!

  • 5 of 5

Our family reunion at Pop Castle last week included adults, teens and children 9yrs and up. The estate was beautiful, comfortable, historic and fun. Lots of room for our party of 12 to stretch out, go bicycling, fishing or exploring. Well supplied with necessities, great linens, reliable WiFi and a generally kid-proof setup. It was a reasonable commute to Busch Gardens (great coasters!) and Jamestown/Yorktown. Our only disappoinment was to be rained out of our fishing charter with Captain Billy at the Ingram Bay Marina, but its a good excuse to return to Pop Castle. Thanks to the Ramadans for their outstanding management and maintenance of this unique home of comfortable- living-history.
