We now also provide 250g of Coffee for all guests staying Dec - Aug so that you can arrive and immediately enjoy a cup of delicious, hot Costa Rican coffee! We also provide a cel phone for you comfort while here in Manuel Antonio! We have installed some important numbers in the phone to make life a bit easier for you!

This newly remodeled home has all the amenities to make your trip delightful, stress-free, exotic, and comfortable, while hosting a very tropical, open, bright design that will surely erase all winter blues! Jungle, ocean, sunsets, monkeys, butterflies, mapaches, iguanas - and virtually no neighbors!

This house has plenty of indoor space and plenty of outdoor space as well, both covered and open-air deck s. There is a roofed outdoor area above the pool deck that measures 600sq.ft. and the pool and pool-deck roughly measure 800 sq. ft. Hop in the pool, get some sun, feel better about life and then relax on one of our lounge chairs or sit back in the shade of our covered deck. See the monkeys go by while losing yourself into the deep green/blue ocean of the quiet/peaceful/gorgeous Bisanz Bay. Relax, sit back, unwind, de-stress and enjoy one of the magnificent ocean views on the planet according to the Ottawa Citizen, which calls the Barba Roja Restaurant (100 meters from the Barba Roja House) 'One of the Top 5 places in the world to watch water.' We are here to help make your vacation stress-free! Ask us about a private chef to dine in, tours and activities in the area, transportation to and from San Jose or other parts of Costa Rica.

Centrally located next to Tulemar Gardens and the Barba Roja Restaurant, everything you will need for your stay is within walking distance: International grocer - 5 minute walk, 8 of the area's top restaurants are within a 5 minute walk, the top four bars on Manuel Antonio are with a 3 minute walk. And the absolute best part, while this house is located close to all of these locals, there is virtually no noise of any sort due to jungle on four sides of the house. Even the beach is only 12 minute-downhill walk (the uphill is NOT 12 minutes).

This house is centrally located at the halfway point between the beaches of Manuel Antonio and the town of Quepos. This house is only 130 meters off of the main road, yet is nestled into the jungles of Costa Rica so that all you hear are the sounds of nature. This recently remodeled home is fully furnished and extremely comfortable, and filled with top of the line appliances, as well as teak wood furniture and ceilings, plus a brand new pool and loft to make the house more livable. The pool and outdoor deck and shower were built in Sept of 2011.

There are 2 full bedrooms and a loft. In the largest bedroom, there are 2 queen-size beds, a full-size bed in the master bedroom and two twin beds in the loft. The bathrooms are reasonably large and comfortable.

The beaches of Manuel Antonio are a 3 minute drive or a 12 minute downhill walk. there is an international grocer just a 5 minute walk away, and there are activities and tours of all kinds and excitement levels that will complete your jungle adventure.

About Heather Burt

I moved to Manuel Antonio in Aug of 2004 because I simply fell in love with the delightful Costa Rican people and the convergence of powerful elements all meeting in one place - the mighty Pacific Ocean, the strong sun, the wildness of the jungle, the tropical animals and foods, the strong winds and rains . . . We lived there with our two girls until April of 2012 when we moved back to Florida - and we now long for the days when we get to go and visit Manuel Antonio ourselves. We hope you love Costa Rica as much as we do!

Heather Burt purchased this house in 2004

Why Heather Burt chose Manuel Antonio

Because it is awesome! Centrally located, beautiful, comfortable, easy walking distances, no need for a rental car, plus this house is private and quiet and has an awe-inspiring view!

This house is truly in the middle of it all, yet just enough removed to make it a quiet, heavenly getaway where you can walk to everything including 10 restaurants, a bank, a few bars, a sports bar with pool tables, a car rental agency, two grocery stores, etc. . .

Perfect location and we felt

  • 5 of 5
The house is beautiful and the location was very convenient. The description was very accurate but there is no way to describe the complete beauty you see when you sit on the deck or swim in the pool.
There is complete flexibility. If you want to have a week on your own, the grocery store and several restaurants are within easy walking distance and the local bus is just a few steps away. However, Josue was available to arrange any day trips we wanted to take. All we needed to do was tell him what we wanted and he arranged everything. He is knowledgeable and honest and we felt well taken care of without feeling any pressure to use his services if we didn't need them. Roxanna takes good care of the house and was also very flexible. We did have one issue with keys breaking but it was more a result of the heat, humidity and aluminum material used in Costa Rica to make keys. They are "soft" but since we were given two sets of keys we were able to get into the house easily and a replacement key arrived the next day with no hassle on our part.
Our three daughters loved the place and we were able to enjoy a full week of peace and happiness.

Owner's Response: Hey there Susan!

We are so very happy that you all enjoyed your week at the Casa Barba Roja!!! The key issue is something we will have to fine tune since it has now happened twice, although I think you are correct about he keys being made of a "soft" material. I am not sure what remedy we will find but there is one out there!! It was wonderful having you all as guests in our house and we hope you will come back again soon and visit us!

Stop hunting, just rent this villa for your trip.

We (three guys & two girls) traveled from Wisconsin for a wedding and were overwhelmed by the kindness of the locals and the perfection of Casa Barba Roja. We enjoyed the company of several lizards, including Iggy and Lizzy (the boys fed Lizzy a beetle and excitement ensued); we didn't know iguanas could climb trees! We also met a sloth at the house, but he was shy. The pool was a huge highlight in our downtime, with the incredible view and perfect temperature. Josue and Roxana were wonderful and on hand whenever needed. The house is in walking distance of several restaurants/bars and a happy downhill hike to the beach. Cabs are easy to catch, and incredibly quick if you call them. The grocery store delivers! Don't look any further; just rent this house.

Great location for family vacation

  • 3 of 5
There were plenty transportation options early AM at San Jose airport. Our reserved private transfer wasn't to be found. Fortunately, a taxi driver named Eric (so kind, helpful and a great introduction to the people of Costa Rica), helped us. He used his cell to reach Josue, who arranges tours and is caretaker for the house. Even though he had our flite # and time, our driver supposedly went to the wrong airport. Eric made several calls, offered transport for the same price, and waited with us until our driver showed up 1.5 hours later. This was reassuring as nothing was open around the airport at this early hour. Once we were in our van, the trip went smoothly.
Josue met us at the house and let us check in early even though the housekeeper was still cleaning. He went over everything in detail including the security, house cell phone, and list of phone contacts if we needed anything. The house is surrounded by a small fence, barred windows, doors, several locks, and a security system. Using the security was a chore. Twice, people from neighboring houses complained about the alarm. Apparently, previous guests have had problems with the system and the alarm is very loud and disruptive. We didn't set off the alarm or feel unsafe in the house or anywhere; the better houses have security systems. We walked, took the bus, or were picked up at the house by the tour companies. No rental car was needed and I'm glad we didn't have one. The bus stop was close to house, took $ or colones, and gave change. We never had to wait long for a bus. Many restaurants, shops, and a couple of markets were walking distance but we took the bus to and from the beach. Sidewalks are rare, roads hilly, curvy, narrow. After dark, we carried a flash lite.
Pros: Josue! Location! View,Pool, beautiful landscaping around house, lots of space, lots of chairs in and out of house. Well stocked kitchen. No wifi problems. Incredible view of thunder and lightning storms.
Cons: Beds were very hard and uncomfortable. Music from nearby restaurants was loud and frequently went on until after midnite. No bath soap etc. Bring your own.
Maid service was about every other day. Not allowed to use washer/dryer but maid did laundry for included fee. Sheets were never washed, we stayed 9 nites. AC was loud & rattled but efficient.
Tours etc : white water rafted, ADR 10:1, MA park tour with Josue, mangrove kayak, surfing, massage.
Communication with owner and Josue was easy and prompt.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review of the Casa Barba Roja. We are sorry that there were some items of your stay that you did not agree with. I can do nothing but apologize for the tardy arrival of the private shuttle van from the San Jose Airprt to Quepos. Typically the transportation company we use is prompt and reliable, although in this case clearly there was a serious mistake. However, according to the concierge, Josue, the van was upstairs at the airport and simply had to drive downstairs to where the arrivals exit and then the driver found the guests and drove them without issue to Quepos. He said the delay was no more than 10 minutes and that he had already complained to our transfer agency about the problem.
As for the cons you mention about the house, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. We have never had a previous guest complain about the "hard" mattresses. All beds in the house are no more that two years old and none of them were less than $700 new. What type of mattresses should we have? Obviously we do not want soft mattresses.
As for the maid never washing the sheets during the 9-night stay, she says otherwise. Also, since we have multiple sheet sets of each color we use on the beds, it is possible that the sheets were in fact changed but they were just not changed to another color so maybe it did not look like they had been changed? And as for Roxana, the maid, coming every other day, that is also incorrect (this is an absolute fact since I, the owner, am in town right now and staying at our other house in Manuel Antonio) since I drove her to the house every single day (except for Wed and Sun which are her days off) on our way to th beach.
We have complained to Salsipuedes about the music but are hesitant to push any further since we do not want to create neighborly drama. The alarm is loud and yes it might not be pleasing to our neighbors, but a soft alarm no one can hear does not help protect the house.
True Manuel Antonio does not have sidewalks making it inherently more dangerous to walk around, but this is part of a third world country where there simply is not enough money to take care of what should be necessary details.

Beautiful with caveats

  • 2 of 5
The main reason to stay at Casa Barba Roja is the spectacular view from the patio toward the ocean. The kitchen is newly renovated but house itself just adequate. The problem we encountered upon arrival were dirty sheets and coverlets (sand at the bottom of the sheets from previous guests' feet. . . yuk!). A considerable drawback is the security system, evidently necessary because of the high rate of theft in Manuel Antonio. One has to lock the front and back iron gates as well as interior doors from the INSIDE as well as the outside with a key, creating a fire hazard. The locks themselves gave us unending trouble (the locksmith had to come and fix a faulty doorknob that prevented our egress to the patio). Another day the key broke in the lock, the security alarm went off but the button on the keyring would not turn it off, the security guard came but could not help. So we waited, tired, sandy and irritated, for an hour outside for the concierge (who by the way is absolutely wonderful) to let us in. (No fault of his for the delay; he had to leave his day job to rescue us!) DVD player would only play movies in black and white. Would look for lodgings elsewhere next time.

Owner's Response: I must admit I am totally confused by this review. The guest complains about how the house was dirty, but then tips the maid very well when she leaves (I, the owner, was NEVER informed of this during her actual stay). She complains that the concierge took too long to resolve their issues with the keys (how do you break three keys in a 6-night stay???) but then tips the concierge very well when she leaves. She complains about Manuel Antonio being so dangerous (not that she herself nor her family had ANY issues at all with items being stolen or going missing nor any issues or feelings of being unsafe). Yes, the house has bars on the windows and doors and a heavy-duty alarm system because one cannot count on the police here like one can in the USA or Canada.
I will have to give her the DVD thing. I was completely unaware that the DVD player played only in black and white - although when the concierge and I tried it after they left with DVD's bought here in Costa Rica it worked just fine. I know for some reason the DVD players distinguish between countries and areas and sometimes the DVD players will not play, or not play correctly DVDs from another country.
I wish this guest had contacted me or the concierge during her 6-night stay in order to voice some of these concerns to see if we could have done SOMETHING to make her and her family happy.

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5
We are a family of 5 with 3 boys ages 6-12. We were hoping the property would be as comfortable and beautiful as it appeared in the pictures and we were not disappointed! It is a gorgeous view with comfortable and up to date amenities. We could not have been happier with the location either. The kitchen is up to date and we cooked there a few times, but there are multiple restaurants within a very short walking distance to the house. Josue and Roxanna were also amazing and extremely helpful. We have recommended the house to friends of ours and if we travel back to Manuel Antonio, we would definitely stay there again. My children didn't want to leave! We loved it. Thank you for helping us have a terrific stay.

A great place to stay in MA

  • 5 of 5
Our family of three stayed at Casa Barba Roja in late Feb/early March 2014 but our review starts well before that because the manager and concierge were involved in our planning almost a year before we arrived. The value in the ability to use the knowledge of these two people cannot be overstated when it comes to preparing for your CR vacation. I was in frequent contact with both and they were always super helpful. The house is centrally located and we walked on several occasions to grocery stores, restaurants, the bus stop, and the bank that is right across the street. The location is a huge draw for this property, it is tucked neatly into the jungle of MA after a short walk down a paved lighted path from the main road. We spent countless hours enjoying the sunsets, pool and surroundings and were often visited by jungle dwellers. During the 10 days we were there we saw capuchin & squirrel monkeys, sloths, 2 types of toucan, halloween jungle crab, gladiator frogs, iguanas, a poisonous cane toad, and lots of other birds / wildlife . To wake up early and have a cup of coffee while watching the jungle come alive was worth the trip alone. The house itself is very nice, comfortable, and mostly well maintained but there were some small issues with the house that didn't quite live up to the expectations we had from the other reviews. The ice maker didn't work but they did have ice trays, the shower head for the second bedroom is too long so it sprays directly on the door making a huge watery mess outside the shower, the A/C in the main bedroom never did get cold enough for us so we all slept in the second bedroom, and lastly the railing outside could use a few repairs, it's loose in places and starting to break off in others, I even ripped my shirt on one of the broken corners. I read about TV problems, but I can honestly say we never even thought about turning it on while we were there! I hesitate to mention these small issues because I would have a hard time staying anywhere else if I were to return to MA but I do want to leave as honest & thorough review as possible.
Lastly, our concierge Josue was greatness during our stay. He was always ready to help with anything we needed along the way from tour advice to transportation arrangements and I can't compliment him enough. We liked him so much we requested him for our Midworld Tours where he also works and he was really great at that too. My son still talks about Mr. Josue and how much he liked him!

Owner's Response: Hello Wendy and Louis!

Thank you all so much for taking the time to write such a wonderful review!! As per the issues, the railing has been fixed and will be replaced entirely in Sept and Oct (we would do it earlier but the has solid rentals through August). This is first time I have heard mention of the AC unit in the Master bedroom not being cold enough, but this will be dealt with IMMEDIATELY!!!

And yes, Josue is a great, great guy - and a wonderful concierge!!!!
