L'Escala offers a great diversity of landscapes and settlements: modern centers near the sea, the old town (Cascade antic), the medieval village of St. Marti d'Empuries and other fortified hamlets such as Cinc claus, the hamlet of Les Corts, Vilanera and Els Recs.
