Overview

Pepeekeo Estate Rental Photos and Description

Grand and spacious 4 bdrm home with 2 streams and ocean views

Experience the beauty: Expansive views of the beautiful Hamakua coast and the ocean from the spacious veranda.

Experience elegance: Grand, architect-designed home, with marble and hardwood floors, wainscoting and fine details.

Experience nature: 2 streams and a private waterfall, fruit trees, 20 lush landscaped acres.

Experience serenity: No city lights or noise - only the gentle music of the flowing waters.

Experience unparalleled privacy: no neighbors in sight.

Experience relaxation: soak in the hot tub. Or our property manager will schedule you with a visiting massage therapist for a nominal fee.

Breathe the fresh air: Vog is very rare in this particular spot in East Hawaii, because the volcano is south-west of Kapehu, and the wind usually blows in off the ocean from the north-east. (Vog is the volcanic smoke and sulfuric acid fumes that plague the Kona side of Hawaii.)

Convenient location: 'Out in the country' feeling, yet only 10 miles from downtown Hilo and 20 minutes from the Hilo airport.

Near swimming/surfing beaches, National Parks, volcano watching, snorkeling reefs, botanical gardens, mountains, hiking - everything wonderful about the Big Island.

The climate at Kapehu Retreat House is perfect. Situated at 800-900 feet elevation, the air is cooler than at the beach or in Hilo town: upper 70's F to low 80's during the day, and upper 60's F at night, nearly all times of the year. In the winter it can get down to 60 at night and may not get above 75 during the day.

Despite being on the rainy side of the island, mosquitoes are rare at Kapehu Retreat House, because the eucalyptus groves on either side of the property emit a fragrance that is a natural mosquito repellent.

Amenities provided: The spacious home is fully furnished. The fully equipped kitchen has ocean views, granite counters, gas range, large refrigerator with ice maker and cold water, microwave, blender, toaster, coffee maker - everything you need to cook your gourmet meals. The indoor dining room has a beautiful mango wood table and 8 mango wood chairs, and on the grand lanai the large outdoor dining table has 8 chairs. The living room has a fireplace for those rare chilly evenings. The marble-floored laundry room is equipped with a front-loading washer and dryer. You can park two cars on the carport to keep out of the sun and rain.

The large house has 4 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms and a half-bath, plus an outdoor shower, and sleeps up to 10 maximum.

NO EVENTS: Because of zoning restrictions (the house is located on a 1-lane farm road), the owners are not allowed to authorize any events, receptions, commercial activities, or large gatherings on the property. Maximum number of people using the house: 10. Maximum number of vehicles at the house: 3.

WARNING! There are fraudsters who pose as owners of vacation rentals, who find ways to intercept email inquiries on sites such as VRBO and HomeAway. They typically ask you to electronically transfer money to their bank. For this reason, we do not accept electronic bank transfers. Thus, if anyone asks you to send an 'EBT' or 'EFT' to them as a deposit on the Kapehu Retreat House, don't trust them; report them to the police. Never send credit card information via email. You can give your credit card information over the phone to the actual owner, or go to the secure payment link the owner will email to you, or you can book it online through VRBO and enter the information into the VRBO secure site. Finally, never give a payment to someone who refuses to tell you the tax ID# of their rental business. Our Hawaii tax ID# is W48882576-01.

About Marcy Matasick

Most of the time we live in New Mexico at 7,000 feet in the mountains, though we spend as much time in Hawaii as possible. Our wonderful local Hawaiian caretaker, Kealani, will be the one to greet you and see that you have everything you need to feel at home when renting our house.

Our plan is to retire to the Big Island, and we purchased the Kapehu Retreat to be our retirement home. But even though we're in our 60's we can't afford to retire yet. Nor can we afford to keep both the Kapehu home AND our New Mexico home and pay 2 mortgages. So we're renting out the Kapehu home to help us afford to keep it. The expenses are much higher than we imagined, and the rental income does not come close to paying the expenses (so in essence we are subsidizing your stay). But the rental income we do receive helps keep us out of foreclosure until we reach our retirement goal. So, thank you! May you be blessed by your visit to our slice of paradise.

Marcy Matasick purchased this estate in 2011

Why Marcy Matasick chose Pepeekeo

We chose to purchase property in this area is because the Hamakua Coast is as beautiful as Hawaii gets, and this particular location is ideal for it's close proximity to the volcano, the snorkeling tide pools, the spectacular waterfalls and canyons, and all the things we love to do and see. We also greatly prefer the Hilo side of Hawaii over the touristy Kona side, which is a barren desert swarming with traffic and overpriced tourist traps. We've been vacationing in Hawaii for decades, and when we saw this estate we fell head over heals for it:

We love the flowing waters.

We love the lush beauty of nature all around.

We love the privacy. (No need for curtains on the windows!)

We love the quiet (we dislike traffic noise).

We love the enormous sweeping views from every room in the house.

We love being able to grow papayas, pineapples, lilikoi, bananas, citrus trees, etc.

We love the moisture (being from the desert of New Mexico).

We love being so close to our favorite snorkel reefs and hiking trails.

We love everything Hawaiian.

What makes this estate unique

What is so unique about this place is that it's only 15 minutes from downtown Hilo and all the shops and restaurants and medical facilities and museums, etc., yet it's so quiet and rural you feel like you're far out in the boondocks.

Gorgeous! - ideal location, great value

  • 5 of 5
We are now totally sold on vacation rental homes, we will forever avoid hotels and resorts. (We visited Big Island a few years ago and had a nice trip, except that we spent too much $$ on a mere room in a basic beach-side inn.) Now we know we can have a far better vacation for less money in a vacation rental. And Kapehu Retreat House is way beyond your usual vac rental - so classy & elegant & tasteful & gracious & comfy & homey.
There were 6 of us: my husband, myself, my parents, and our 2 teenage sons. We could really spread out in the spacious home and each of the boys had his own room. We let my parents have the master suite, which has no blinds, because they don’t mind waking with the sun. Mom said she felt pampered, “cradled” by the pillow-top king mattress. My husband and I took the wailele bedroom above the stream, and loved listening to the rainforest sounds at night - gurgling water, crickets, coqui frogs. I slept so well. The wailele room’s mattress is not pillow-top but firm support which I need for my back, yet with a cushy layer of memory foam on top, one of the best beds I ever slept on.
The extraordinarily beautiful home surrounded by huge sweeping views made us feel like lords of a royal manor. The location is great: everything we wanted to do was nearby. Of course the boys had to go to BOTH of the nearby zip line tours. We joined them for the one that zips across 400-ft Akaka Falls: thrilling, gorgeous, terrifying, wonderful. We swam at a black sand beach with giant turtles. Snorkeled at Kapoho Tide Pools among spectacular reef fishes. Hired a bird guide to show us incredible native birds in the nearby Hakalau Forest Reserve. Rode horseback through Waipio Canyon beside twin 1,000-ft waterfalls. Spent a couple of days (not enough) exploring Volcanoes National Park and its hiking trails, craters, steaming vents, lava tubes, etc. Most evenings we got “home” early enough to cook dinner in the beautiful well-outfitted kitchen & ate our meals on the lanai overlooking expanses of green valley and sparkling ocean. Talk about paradise!
You'll adore the caretaker Kealani, a “kanaka maoli” (real Hawaiian native) - we sure enjoyed “talking story” with her. And before your trip, look at the list of sights to see on the Kapehu website.

Excellent stay

  • 5 of 5
Me and my family (7 people from 70+ year old parents to 6 and 8 year old kids) loved the place. They all raved about it the whole time. There were a few minor issues which I discussed with the owner, but nothing that ruined the stay. Having such a huge living room and kitchen were very convenient for our family. My mom (who doesn't walk very well) didn't have any problem with this property which was great.

I had a few conversations with Marcy and she was great to work with. You can tell she really cares about the place and wants you to have a nice stay. We have stayed at a few places, but she had the most interest by far in our stay.

We had a great time. It was a beautiful house in a great location. Highly recommended.

Oh my, words fail!

Our jaws did drop upon arrival! The pictures are right on; this is such an exquisite home, with the grounds being beauty and balm. Having breakfast or dinner on the lanai looking over beautifully manicured acres at the ocean view--couldn't be better. We loved the sound of the stream and having the darling little waterfall to visit. Be sure and check out the owner's website complete with even more beautiful pictures and interesting information. We really do recommend the Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Garden which is right nearby, and the beautiful parks on the ocean as you drive north, particularly the park with the monument to tsunami victims. As a bonus, the owner and her lovely manager who welcome you with such an aloha spirit make the experience even better. One warning: you may really be wanting to remodel after your visit! Mahalo for a lovely stay.

An unforgetable vacation at this beautiful place

  • 5 of 5
This is the second time that we visited the Big Island. The first time, like most tourists, we only stayed on the west side of the island, and had two days of long drive to visit the east side. This time, my husband insisted on staying for two weeks, with one week on the east side and one week on the west. I thought it'd be too long of a vacation on one island. But I'm so happy that he insisted on it, and even happier that he found the Kapehu house! The place is just amazing, inside and outside. The house itself is very spacious, and beautifully built. I even told my husband that if we built our own house one day, I'd like to copy some of the interior design. The lanai is very large with a serene view of the hills and ocean. The kids were very interested by the papaya trees and pineapple plants growing on the property. Since the place is on large parcel, it feels so special to take a stroll on the backyard, go to the waterfall and walk through the Eucalyptus forest with no one else around.

I think the only problem with this experience is that I'm spoiled by it. Now I have a high expectation of vacation homes that we'll rent for our next trip elsewhere!

And last but not the least, Marci is a wonderful owner to deal with. She's very nice.

Thank you for the wondering experience.

Owner's Response: Thank you for capturing the feel of this wondrous place. I've long thought the magic of East Hawaii (Hilo side) is a well-kept secret. We traveled to Hawaii many times over many years and stayed at many different places, before purchasing a home on the Big Island - and we chose this particular location because it's the best location on the island to be! All the best sights and activities are within a short drive of the Kapehu Retreat.

I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay on our estate. Yes, we chose this particular home because of its extraordinary beauty and serenity (even though we can't quite afford it). Once we saw Kapehu, we knew we'd never settle for a less beautiful home. Our property manager Kealani is awesome, too.

And yes, 2 weeks is not too long on one island - if the island is the Big Island. Of course, Maui is beautiful, so is Kauai, and so are parts of Oahu, but you can explore each of them in a few days. The Big Island, though, is BIG. If you add up the square feet of all the other 7 Hawaiian islands, then multiply that total by 3, you can fit it all into the Big Island and have many square miles left over. Plus the Big Island is fantastically varied: from snowy mountains, to desert wilderness, to sunny beaches, to tropical rain forests, to an active volcano!

I'm sure you'll return. Mahalo and malama pono.

Absolute Magic

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed here in November 2011 for a week, and I have to say that it was the best place I have ever stayed (and I have stayed in some pretty nice places around the world). Yet here I am almost 14 months after we stayed, and if I close my eyes I can still feel the breezes, see the lush landscape, hear the sound of the waterfalls and the nightly frog chorus - just utter perfection. Each day I had to be dragged away to explore the island because I just wanted to stay in my own personal paradise. Picking fresh fruit every day and wandering down the lawn to lie in the hammock with the ocean in the distance was just spectacular. Mere words cannot do this place justice -- Kapehu House is truly a piece of heaven on earth. The sunken hot tub on the wrap-around lanai was the perfect remedy for muscles tired from day-tripping. The kitchen (with its spectacular view down the slope to the Pacific) made it difficult to decide whether to go out or dine in! Marcy was lovely to deal with -- she answered all questions promptly and accommodated each request.
I wish I was there right now! I truly cannot express just how in love we fell with this property! Thank you!

More lovely than advertised

  • 5 of 5
We first fell in love with this beautiful home from the pictures. When we finally arrived, we were happy to discover it's far lovelier than the pictures expressed. It really has to be experienced to be appreciated -- the elegance of the home, the lush beauty of the surroundings, the quiet serenity like a temple, the immaculate cleanliness.
We're city kids, so we were shocked to find there were no curtains in the master bedroom or master bath! It took us two days to understand why the owners didn't put up curtains -- there is no one around. No one. No roads, no houses, no neighbors, no lights. From the master bath you have views in two directions of green rolling hills and pastures. From the master bedroom you have green hills in one direction and the stunning ocean view in the other. Btw, if you like to sleep late, choose one of the west-facing bedrooms, because in the master bedroom when the sun rises over the ocean it hits you right in the face. But we loved that.
The location couldn't be better - it's central to all the sights in East Hawaii. We had a great time at the zipline a couple of miles away in Honomu, and the Onomea botanical gardens, and snorkeling at the tide pools in Kapoho, and spent two full days exploring Hawaii Volcanoes Park. Our sons went surfing at a nearby beach I think was called Honolii and said the surfing was as good as any in CA. We did make one day-trip over to the Kona side, and decided we like the Hilo side much better.
The owner pleasantly answered all our many questions before we booked. The manager Chris met us at the house when we arrived and showed around and answered more questions.
We'd definitely recommend the kapehu house, and we hope to return.

The setting is utterly private. (In fact, in our hot tub, bathing suits are optional because no one is around to see you.) No city noises, just the sound of flowing waters, breezes through the trees, and bird songs. No roads or city lights are visible from the house, and the house is not visible from the roads, because there is a eucalyptus forest between the house and the nearest road. The scenery is gorgeous in all directions, especially the lush green valley sloping down to the ocean. It's located on the beautiful Hamakua Coast, which is filled with canyons, waterfalls, rivers, beaches, and botanical gardens. There are 3 zip lines through spectacular scenery within a few minutes drive.

Hilo town is only 15 minutes away. There are several beautiful clear-blue swimming beaches right near downtown Hilo: Keaukaha Beach Park, Kealoha Beach Park, Richardson Ocean Park, Onekahakaha Beach Park, Leleiwi Beach Park, Lehia Beach Park - to name a few. Huge (people-sized) friendly sea turtles will swim with you at these beaches.

Other Activities: Volcano viewing, adventure sightseeing, Zip lining, diving, snorkeling, surfing, swimming, hiking, backpacking - everything you can ask for in a tropical vacation, plus a live volcano, is close by. In fact, the Kapehu Retreat House is located in the absolute most convenient spot on the island for accessing all the sights.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, of course, is a must-see. It's a good reason to stay on the east or Hilo side: the volcano and all the amazing sights in the National Park are much easier to get to from the Hilo side. (From the Kona side it's more than two hours to the volcano). In addition to spending several days sightseeing within the National Park, you'll definitely want to visit the Park at night to see the Hale MauMau crater glowing!

If you are an outdoor adventurer, the National Park is filled with wonderful hikes: short hikes, day-hikes, and overnight trips. One of our favorite hikes is a 3-day/2-night wilderness backpack trip to Halape Beach (with ruins and totems from an old Hawaiian fishing village, snorkel reefs and pristine sandy beaches) for the 1st night, and Keauhou Point for the second night, for pristine snorkeling pools and beaches. You'll need a permit from the Park Service, and they will provide directions and maps.
