|Minimum Stay||4 nights|
A true log cabin that sits right on the lake and over looks the beautiful Smokey Mountains. Make our house your home for a week or a night. We want you to feel completely at home. The house is completely renovated in 2006. We sit right on the lake and have the most amazing view. This house was the first house to be built on Thunderbird Mountain in 1962. Once you stay here, you will never want to leave. It is a private, secluded lake. Sit on the dock and catch a few trout or just take a relaxing nap. There are only a handful of Lakes left in the country that are rated this clean and we want to keep our lake one of them. This lake is clean and clear, from our deck you can see at least 10 feet down into the water. There is a view of the lake from every window. It is 12 steps to the lake. Everything from the sheets to the large DVD collection is first rate.
At night you can enjoy the huge deck and relax under a blanket of stars. The deck is decorated with Teak Furniture and a Great Big Teak Bar. If you are looking for a place to enjoy quiet, sun and relaxation, this it the home to rent. From our deck you will be looking at a beautiful lake, with the Smokey Mountains in the background. The movie Nell was filmed on this lake, as was The Clearing.

Scott and Katie consider this cabin their Diamond in the Rough. Our cabin was built in 1963 and completely renovated in 2005. It was the very first property developed on Thunderbird Mountain. The builder of the original home lives right across the Lake. We looked for a Lake House for years before discovering the secret of Lake Santeetlah. It was Love at First Site and we love sharing this amazing piece of HEAVEN. We know you will enjoy it as much as we do.
Scott Mitchell purchased this house in 2001
We have never seen a Lake this beautiful. Looking down from our deck you can see at least 10 feet into the water. Our view is Unbeatable, and will never be altered. Only 20% of the lake is able to be built on, the remaining 80% is Natural Forest. When you wake up in the morning, go get a cup of coffee and sit on the huge deck. If your lucky you may see one fishing boat go by, but most likely you will see A Bald Eagle. We love that there is no Movie Theatre, No Mall, and No Walmart.
Don't be surprized if you see a Bald Eagle fly by or a Beaver swim next to your boat.
We love our Raccoon families that come by from time to time. You truly feel transported to a different world. The lake never gets crowded or rough. You can sit on our huge deck in the morning and watch the smoke rise from the water to display a single canoe quietly floating across the lake. It is as close to Heaven as you can get.
Thank you for sharing the world's greatest deck. We had an amazing time. We even ate fish that we caught sitting on your dock. Thank you for making your home available to the rest of us. We love the Mitchell cabin. Best Valentines Day ever.
We had a great time at this house. The house is very comfortable and in fine shape. The pictures of the house/lake/property are all accurate. The only reason i knocked a star off was because the pictures don't show the lower bedroom which is essentially a sort of musty basement. Not a huge deal, but the pictures on this site seem to not show it anywhere which is slightly shady.
We had one very minor issue (no wifi password) and the owner was very speedy to correct it, which is always appreciated.
Having a canoe to use was an awesome perk. We explored all over the lake in it. The dock is great for hanging out on and the deck is fantastic! It's huge and the view is incredible, i can't stress that part enough. Also, a flying squirrel was living in the birdhouse west side of the deck, which is always fun to see.
If you choose to leave the comfort of the property and lake, things to do in the area are plentiful. Quick and easy drives can take you to excellent creeks to play in, waterfalls to view, and beautiful old growth forests to hike in.
We stayed here for 5 nights in the summer and I think we only saw 15 boats (maybe) and half of those were canoes/kayaks. It's a truly tranquil setting.
At the time of writing this (2014) the county that the house is in is the only dry county in all of NC. If you like alcohol, bring it in. If you come from the west, it's worth the drive to the east to get your hands on some of the amazing NC craft beer.
The only other small thing was that we didn't know what to do with the trash. I think the info folder for the house could use a slight update to correct this, but that's an easy fix.
We would (and probably will) rent this house again in the future.
Oh, and the furniture is really pretty.
This was our first time visiting Lake Santeetlah and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. What an amazing view of what has to be one of the most beautiful lakes on earth. The cozy, rustic feel of the cabin made us feel right at home. Aside from a visit to the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest one day we just enjoyed the comfort of the cabin and splendor of that beautiful lake...canoeing, boating, fishing, swimming, and most importantly...relaxing. Can't wait to go back!
Our family of three and toy schnauzer stayed for a week....not nearly long enough! We have vacationed on L.S. for the last three years. This home was charming and perfect for us! Scott, the owner, was great to work with. He is there if you need him, but not intrusive in any way...exactly what we look for in a VRBO owner.
The main level and upstairs of the home have been completely remodeled in an authentic old log cabin style with beautiful and unique upscale, artistic touches. The linens and bedding were fresh and plush: the mattresses super comfy. The lower level offers two twin beds and a futon; it is the original part of the cabin, reminiscent of a finished ratskeller with a campy feel...perfect for kids looking for their own space to hang out.
The cabin is situated on the best part of the lake...the views are simply magnificent. The deck is huge with several different seating areas. Our only challenge for the week was the deck furniture. The furniture is eclectic and done in a very heavy, thick wood. We had a lot of rain in the afternoons the week we were there (N.C. has had record rainfall this summer) and the furniture would get saturated. Several evenings we were unable to sit because everything was soaked through. We went into town to try to find cushions to no avail. I would recommend adding some cushions or mix in some seating that dries out a little quicker. But don't change the awesome loungers or the captain chair settee!
I would highly recommend renting a boat, if not for the week, at least for a day. We are big lake people and this lake is spectacular. We have been renting from Deyton Boat Camp from Bob and Joanne. They are awesome people and take very good care of their customers, something that is crucial when renting boats. If you have a day you're looking for a field trip, I would recommend the Joyce Kilmer Forest...a bit of a hike (literally), but well worth it!
We left after a week talking about next year. We will definitely rent this beautiful log cabin again!
We were there for a week and except for a trip to the grocery in town we just enjoyed the place, the lake, and the weather. Owners are great hosts and the place was very clean on arrival. The amenities including TV, internet, and outdoor grill were all fantastic. Definitely would do it again.
The property is beautiful! We wanted to find a location where our children could stay with us. As we are Florida residents, the location was perfect for meeting our family at a central location. The cabin has been recently remodeled with some very unique features and the best of kitchen appliances. The property is clean and well maintained. We had ample space for our guests. Lake Santeetlah is pristine! It must be even more beautiful in the warmer months. We will definitely book the cabin again!
Each time we stay at the cabin it gets nicer and nicer. We have enjoyed every season except spring. We hope to change that this spring. We were looking at the open dates when we came across the review that was posted by James. I felt compelled to write a rebutal. Scott and Katie take such care of this home, they go out of their way to make their guest feel right at home. The bathroom upstairs is beautiful and it is crazy to say that people can se in. It is extremely high up and the view is the amazing mountains. That is a ridiculous statement. The downstairs area is perfect for the kids to hang out. It is cozy and clean and completely livable. Sometimes you just cant make people happy. You just really need to see this cabin for yourself. I know we cant wait to get back there.
Joyce Kilmer National Park is 20 minutes away.
