BEAUTIFUL APARTMENT WITH POOL IN UNSPOILT VILLAGE IN STUNNING COUNTRYSIDE

Gharb Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Frequent repeat guests and consistently high reviews for many years. Free WIFI

Sleeps 2/4. Beautiful 1 bedroom apartment with a private balcony and shared swimming pool in an exclusive development. Located on the edge of a peaceful inland village but within a short walk of Ta'Pinu cathedral, local restaurants, grocery shops and bars. Airport transfers and car rental can be arranged. All bookings include free WIFI, welcome grocery pack, linen and indoor towels, maid service and local assistance. An excellent base for exploring the rest of the island.

We named our property “Scenic Escapes” for its picturesque country location where you can unwind and escape everyday life for a while. Our apartment building “Ta’Gaglione” was designed by a renowned local architect and is built from the Gozitan creamy limestone to create a small exclusive development of just 8 apartments. We offer good quality self catering accommodation in an ideal location, being on the edge of this peaceful traditional village, yet only a five minute walk to the village centre. Gharb is a historic local village with the community centred around the picturesque church square, which frequently plays host to local events involving music, dancing and plenty of food where all are made to feel welcome. Nearby is the celebrated Ta’Pinu cathedral, while the Azure Window and Blue Hole diving site are just 3km away and the quaint capital Victoria can be reached in 5 minutes by car or bus.

There are several restaurants within a few minutes walk and some friendly local bars in addition to a well stocked supermarket for those nights when you want to eat in. With a tastefully decorated bedroom and bathroom, cosy living area with balcony and swimming pool with sunny deck area overlooking open countryside together with numerous guide books and local information, our apartment offers you a peaceful retreat whatever time of year you choose to visit.

Getting there: FLIGHTS

Fly to Malta's International Airport from London Heathrow/Gatwick in just 3-3½ hours. Most other UK airports will only add another 30 minutes or so to your journey. Malta is also served by numerous other large European airports and is very well connected.

Useful travel information: TRANSFERS TO GOZO

For a stress free start to your holiday, we can organise private transfers from Malta airport direct to our apartment. Please contact us for a quote.

There is a public bus service from the airport to Cirkewwa where you can catch the regular Gozo ferry for €4.75 Euros (£3.60) per foot passenger.

The other option is to hire a car at Malta's airport. Car hire is amongst the cheapest in Europe, with prices starting from €18 (£14) per day.

Whichever mode of transport you choose, it is actually a scenic journey along the coast road and the ferry has excellent facilities including a magazine kisok and cafeteria. The total transfer time should not exceed an hour and a half.

Peaceful Gozo: With a population of just 25,000, consisting mainly of farmers and fisherman, Gozo and it’s inhabitants have a personality quite distinct from big sister, Malta. The countryside is much greener with steep fertile valleys fringing spectacular rugged cliffs that plunge down to reveal alluring bays.

WALKING

Gozo is wonderful walking country with plenty of well trodden tracks through the more famous of the islands landmarks such as Calypso's Cave or the Azure Window but also some hidden secrets such as the beauty and peace of the Lunzjata Valley and the tiny hamlet of Ghasri.

ROCK CLIMBING

For the adrenalin junkies, the Maltese Islands offer a varied and scenic playground for rock climbers of all levels. There is a comprehensive guide in the apartment cataloguing 21 areas on all 3 islands with 1,200 + climbs.

DIVING

Gozo is an enviable base for diving with depths from 5m to 45m and sights from natural rock formations to sunken wrecks and reefs bursting with marine life.

Many people don't realise how stunning the islands still are in the autumn and even the winter – yes, we do get the odd cold spell and rainy day but also a lot of days with brilliant blue skies and sunshine. Off season it makes this area all the more magical ... less tourists to compete with and a more leisurely pace to be taken.

For water lovers, the islands offer some of the best diving in the Mediterranean. There is a wealth of choice for complete novices through to challenging wreck dives for the more experienced. Trial dives in the calm clear waters of Xlendi Bay are a great place to start and from the tender age of eight, children can take the Padi Bubblemaker course to introduce them to the world of scuba diving in a pool in less than six feet of water. In addition to the Mediterranean Sea and many beaches just a short drive away, there is windsurfing, sailing and kitesurfing. If you prefer a slower pace and a little more peace, you could try deep sea fishing, or take a leisurely cruise around the rugged coastline or just enjoy swimming in one of the many beautiful hidden bays.

We are on the island with the oldest freestanding Neolithic temples in the world; they make Stonehenge and the Pyramids look like new builds! Both Hagar Qim and Mnajdra are in the south of Malta but well worth the trip, plus you can also combine it with a trip to the famous Hypogeum, a vast underground burial chamber where over 7,000 human bones were discovered. The most intact temple is on Gozo itself; Ggantija (meaning Giant) was reputed to have been built by a local giantess.

Walkers, cyclists and horse lovers can explore the breathtaking local scenery – most of it so unspoilt … There are the caves of Xaghra , the nature reserve at Ta Cenc, numerous country walks where you can explore the island's unique flora, folklore and maritime museums, the busy market towns of Xaghra and Victoria, windmills, the craft village at Gharb, and a positive plethora of baroque churches!

Talking of food, there are many local delicacies to try. Seafood and shellfish are in abundance. Fish soups, home-made pizzas, aromatic fruit and vegetables, exquisite pastries, award winning wines and let us not forget the ice-creams! Hungry?

For those of you seeking a more tranquil and relaxing holiday, simply rest by our sparkling pool/in our spacious apartment or treat yourselves to a day at a local 5 star spa centre.

Take a day trip over to Malta on the regular ferry service and wander around the baroque modern day capital Valletta, peruse the delights of colourful Marsaxlokk and it's famous Sunday market; amble through the medieval 'silent city' of Mdina for breathtaking views or unwind in one of the award winning spas on the island.

If your idea of a good holiday is tranquility, magnificent unspoiled scenery, the best diving in the Med, superb food and the most amazingly friendly people plus a typical Mediterranean climate, then Gozo is a good choice!

As my husbands family still live in Malta, we have been regular visitors to the islands since I lured him away from the sunshine to live in the UK many years ago. He claims he is still waiting for summer to arrive! Needing a bolthole from the hecticness that comes with being part of a large and noisy Mediterranean family, we bought our first property in Xlendi in 2003. It's only when various people asked if they could stay that we thought maybe renting was the way to go. The overwhelming interest took us by surprise, so we felt more confident in buying our second property in 2007 this time with a pool because us Brits do love to swim in a pool rather than the sea! Desperately not wanting to fall into the pot of cliches, but both places truly are magical, charming and soooo relaxing.

Elaine Meli purchased this apartment in 2007

Gharb is just so traditional Gozitan; there is nothing touristy about this village. There are frequent events taking place in the parish church square where it seems as though the whole village has turned out. There is an annual BBQ when each house turns up with their their family recipe offerings; you can only begin to imagine how much food there is! Gharb is surrounded by greenery with many different walks available from right outside the apartment door, including one of our family favourites up to the little chapel of St Dimitri that has far reaching views over the island. It is a quiet village so a car is probably necessary if you want to travel further than Victoria, or else you are very fit and don't mind walking everywhere. There are only 8 apartments so the development is very small and exclusive. Only one is lived in permanently by a retired English couple while the rest are second homes, so even in summer it is not busy and the pool is never crowded.

The apartment is in a very peaceful location and feels very exclusive. There are little extras in the development that feel very homely; like the library of books in the hallway for example. It is very well kept and presented and exceptionally clean. The apartment itself is very stylish and well thought out and is a comfortable base from which to explore this little gem of an island.

Perfect for a quiet getaway in the sun

  • 5 of 5
We were looking for a quiet week away in the sun, and this flat was absolutely perfect. The village where it's situated is lovely, with a few good restaurants and walking distance to the next village where there's another good restaurant. We did several walks and the scenery was beautiful, and I'd definitely recommend hiring a car so you can get around to the various beaches on the island, plus it's very cheap. The flat itself is very comfortable, although if it had got much hotter we would have wanted air conditioning, so the small pool that the 8 apartments share was very welcome. All in all a great week, thank you!

Enjoyable holiday in quiet apartment

  • 4 of 5
This flat is in an 8 flat block on the outskirts of the lovely village of Gharb. It is in good condition, with a spacious bathroom, living area and balcony. The flat is really quiet, we barely a heard a sound from the neighbours, and the road is not noisy in the mornings. The swimming pool is pleasant from which there are some nice views and amusing cats. A friendly cleaner came to visit to provide clean sheets and towels. In terms of location, the property is 5 minutes walk from a spectacular church that is worth going to, while everywhere in Gozo is an easy drive.

On the down side, we found that the neighbours could have been more welcoming. Most are permanent residents and appeared to look down on us as mere visitors. Also the kitchen is a little bit basic, without an oven and with only basic utensils; if you are really looking to cook quality meals on a daily basis then you may find it tricky.

Overall however it was exactly as we had hoped, and we would thoroughly recommend it for a two person holiday.

After a long, snowy and cold German winter we really looking forward to our 2 week break in Gozo. We elected to rent Elaines flat in Gharb because of it's location and pictorial as well as written presentation. In all aspects we were more than satisfied - two weeks of glorious sunshine and an appartment that fitted to a 'T' it's description. Having previously lived on the island of Gozo for several years I was somewhat surprised by the amount of vehicular traffic passing through this once peaceful village. However, I feel sure that this is as a direct result of the new road building/upgrading currently taking place and am confident that upon completion (later in 2010?) peace and tranquillity shall once again return to the village of Gharb.

Whilst the temptation is to frequent restaurants advertised in most of the Gozo literature I would highly recommend those on a budget but still hopeful of receiving well presented and cooked food to try the local sports clubs which are available in most villages. The club (football) in Gharb is called 'Rangers' and is located a leisurely 5-10 minute walk from the appartment.

The appartment is well suited for those who enjoy activity holidays such as diving (of which some of the best sites in the Med are to be found) and ramblers etc but like to escape from the more touristic places in the island by returning to a quiet and peaceful village. For walkers/ramblers good footwear is essential as some of the best routes/views are to be found by following often stoney and uneven paths. I am thinking particularly of Comino here which is well worth a visit to enjoy the wonderful views to be had by walking around it's circumference.

You will find the neighbours of the other flats friendly and helpful and only too willing to offer advice when requested. This friendliness extends to the Gozitans as well of course and if you really want to learn a lot regarding Gozo, the inhabitants way of life - both in the past and looking towards the future, then taking the time to talk with them will reap enormous benefits.

All in all - a very enjoyable holiday and a very clean and presented appartment.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Gharb. The apartment had everything one could need and we had a very relaxing time. Despite the coolish edge to the breeze now and then we managed to sit out in the sheltered garden area. I never realised that cats were such good timekeepers. It was quite amusing to see 5 turn up to be fed each day between 4 and 5 pm.

The Easter celebrations were most interesting. We took in a few of the processions and services. I was astounded at the beauty and extent of the floral arrangements in the churches - all very different to Easter in the Church of Scotland.

We would certainly recommend hiring a car. The roads are a trifle uneven but they added to the fun of the holiday! Having survived Italian drivers on previous holidays we found the natives very similar in attitude etc!

The candles certainly came in handy on Good Friday when there was an island power cut in the evening.

We managed to get to Valetta by the number 45 bus and took the north route tourist sightseeing bus trip, getting off in Mdina for a couple of hours to look round. Once back 'home' we both agreed that we were pleased we were staying on peaceful Gozo.

a peaceful holiday

  • 4 of 5
I very much enjoyed my week at this attractive apartment in Gharb. i appreciated the quiet location and enjoyed the local walks as well as the hop on hop off bus which stops near to Gharb at Ta Pinu and at the craft village - which itself is well worth a visit. i appreciated the information provided at the apartment; the local shop was well stocked so catering in the apartment was fun, but I also enjoyed dining out at Salvinas and at the places I visited including of course Victoria, San Lawrenz and Marslaforn. the garden and balcony were nice for relaxing in the sun.

Lovely apartment in a peaceful village

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here for a week in March and found the apartment clean and bright with everything we needed.

Gharb is lovely, and Gozo is so small it's easy to get everywhere, we were glad we had a car though, and the car hire is cheap enough.

Neighbours were great, our keys were really stiff at first and the people below let us in a couple of times (they worked fine by the end of the week - may have been newly cut).

Unfortunately we didn't get to use the pool as it was being maintained but the pool area was very nice and I'm sure it'd be lovely in the summer.

We spent the second week in Malta and really wished we were back on Gozo!

We hope to come back again, really pleased with the apartment, thank you.

GHARB VILLAGE

Our apartment is located on the edge of this peaceful inland village but within a short walk of local restaurants, grocery shops and bars. We are a 10 minute walk to the shrine of Ta'Pinu, probably the most revered church on the Maltese Islands; a very interesting folklore museum and a glass blowing shop selling samples of the local art, the beauty of which will rival those found in Venice at half the price!

There are some excellent restaurants for a village of this size with a choice of pasta, local cuisine, fish and seafood. Just under a couple of miles away next to Dwerja and the magnificent Azure Window, you can swim at the Inland Sea, where the sea has cut into the cliffs to form a shallow, sheltered salt water pool with pebbly crystal clear water.

The capital Victoria and its' markets are only 5 minutes away; we are 5 minutes from Dwerja and the Azure Window and only 15 minutes from the red sandy bay of Ramla and the prehistoric temples of Ggantija.

Other Activities: Snorkelling.
