This home sits on an 80 acre parcel that was homesteaded in 1913. The home itself was built in 1963 by our Grandparents using handhewn redwood beams that were harvested from the property. We are making this home available as a vacation rental. Relax in this peaceful setting as you listen to the year round creek. Stroll through the orchards and pick fresh oranges and apples. Read about our family history of those that braved the wild and wooly coast and made Big Sur their home for generations. The home is ideal as it is centrally located between Carmel and Big Sur. Play in Big Sur during the day and dine in world class restaurants in the evening in Monterey and Carmel. Because this home is located right off the main road year around access is no problem. The home has been recently updated yet still retains its original charm. Our online calendar is kept up to date so please check the calendar for availability.
Location, Location, Location:: The home is 3.9 miles from Highway 1 and is located on a ridgetop 1350 feet above the Pacific. The home offers beautiful views of the canyon and ocean and because of its location the home is generally above the fog lending itself to spectacular sunsets and sunny days while the coast can be covered in fog. Because of its central location it is a 30 minute drive south to to Big Sur along some of the most beautiful coastline in California and crosses the world famous Bixby Bridge. With so many activities to chose from in Big Sur your days will be filled. Want a romantic or indulgent dinner? Then a drive 30 minutes north to Carmel-By-The-Sea offers numerous restaurants with a wide variety to chose from with unique shops and numerous art gallerys as you stroll through its quaint town where Clint Eastwood once served as Mayor.
Nearby Activities:: Horse back ride at Andrew Molera State Park, hike the Los Padres National Forest on some of the most challenging trails. In Palo Colorado Canyon you can stroll along the redwood covered Mill Creek Redwood Preserve Trail or drive just four miles up the canyon to Botchers Gap where you have access to the Ventana Wilderness along the Skinner Ridge Trail. Golf at the world famous Pebble Beach Golf Links, wine taste in Carmel Valley, whale watch or kayack in the Monterey Bay or just stay home and enjoy the peace and relaxation that is the essence of Big Sur. Massage can be arranged right in the home.
Our Goal:: We are not in this to make a living, we are simply using the money to pay the taxes on the property to ensure that the legacy that our Great Grandparents left us will continue on for many generations to come, We have had many friends that have recommended their friends stay with us which gave us the idea of making this home available as a vacation rental. The upstairs bedroom has a queen sized bed, the downstairs bedroom has a queen sized bed and a double futon. We live nearby but your privacy will be our utmost concern.
I looked at this property before but opted for a 100 year old cabin closer to Hwy 1. I was to rebook the 100 year old place but the listing showed not available. I later found the site was not working. How lucky for my family of 4. We found this cabin to be much more accommodating and comfortable. This is a charming home cared for with love and pride. My husband and I spent a great amount of time on the deck overlooking the forest and ridge. Just being, listening to wildlife at night, watching the forest come alive in the mornings. The deck is large and comfortable, it pulled me like a magnet upon rising. My husband was drawn there when the sun set after our day trips to the various parks and towns. He is a star gazer and brought his portable telescope for viewing. He grilled steaks one night & declared he must have a gas grill just like it. The grown kids enjoyed the panoramic views from the rooms & wifi. They were up with the dawn bird watching, enjoying the ridge wake up. The kitchen is spacious, well stocked with a large separate dining room. We dined and played board games in the dining room. It's a perfect floor plan for families. We ran the roads somewhat. The parks and area are otherworldly beautiful. The same can be said about the ridge house. We enjoyed being right there and not always going. We did dine at the local tap house burger night and dined in Monterey as well as shopped. The Ridge is close to everything but far away to wrap yourself and your senses in tranquility and peace. Thank you Cheryl & Jake for your lovely hospitality. We will be back!
What a treat! I stayed here with my siblings for our annual hiking trip and I have to say it was perfect. The house was spotless, well equipped and in a beautiful setting. The road in can be daunting so we just planned our days so that we took one trip out in the morning and one trip back when the sun was setting. Truly a lovely home! Big Sur is one of the loveliest places on earth - how nice it is right in our own backyard!
My family and I were thrilled and then sad upon leaving this wonderful place. We already miss it.
The drive up to the house is a little daunting but it would depend on each person if this is a negative. My wife grew apprehensive each time - but my daughter and I grew excited and felt like we were on a mysterious adventure climbing up into our little hideaway!
My wife then fell in love with the house, the peace, the fresh air and the serenity and mystery of the morning mist coming from the ocean and covering the redwoods while enjoying her coffee.
My daughter was thrilled at the wifi - while sitting by a warm fire while I played guitar softly.
If we lived here - we would feel like we had a secret that we hoped the world would never discover.
We cannot wait to return!
Visited Big Sur with my sons for a getaway prior to my youngest son's wedding. The cabin was the perfect spot to stay for hiking and exploring the beautiful coast.
The winding drive through the redwood forest lets you know that you are escaping from it all.
The house itself is beautiful, wonderfully laid out, wonderfully decorated with the owner's antiques and personal touches.
We wish we could have been there more and explored the property a bit more, but for us it was perfect.
If you want to be close enough to enjoy Big Sur/Carmel/Monterey, but get away from it at the end of the day, and have a beer on the porch surrounded by redwoods, this is your place!
A very nice home, with excellent amenities. The pleasant owners live very close by. It is relatively secluded, and has a somewhat difficult uphill access, but not prohibitive. Close to many great state parks, Carmel and Monterey.
