This beautiful 3 storey house is quietly located right in the heart of the old town of Vila Nova de Milfontes. South facing, with stunning views across the sparkling river Mira and out to the Atlantic coast beyond, the house has lots of traditional Portuguese character but offers contemporary living and stylish furnishings. Within a 5 minute walk of some of the best beaches in Europe - white sand, excellent surfing, clean water, uncrowded and unspoilt. Casa da Pombo is perfectly located for holiday makers in search of beautiful rural coastline (in a protected nature reserve), outdoor activities such as surfing, canoeing, hiking or just space to relax, sunbathe and enjoy the beaches and views. Excellent climate with sea breezes. Within a five minute walk are a range of typical Portuguese restaurants, inexpensive and many serving excellent seafood from the town's own fishing port. The town has good supermarkets, a surf school & surf shop, bike hire, tourist office, cafes and bakery.
Why Casa do Pombo?: Are you looking for the authentic Portuguese experience? Our lovely house is in the heart of a beautiful old town, but only 5 mins walk from endless unspoilt beaches. This is 'real' Portugal, a favourite seaside town for Portuguese holiday makers, with very friendly local people and lots of inexpensive restaurants and cafes serving typical home cooked Alentejan regional food.
The interior of the house is stylish and quiet with very little traffic noise around the house. The streets nearby are quiet, with the River below and the Church behind, and there is usually ample parking. There is a small paper shop at the end of the terrace and the internet bar is nearby. 5-10 minutes walk away are a wide range of butchers, bakers, fishmongers, supermarkets and daily public market. The excellent sandwich shop and cafe in the square offers cakes, sandwiches and soup to take away - perfect for picnics. Our visitor book in the house offers tips and advice on good places to eat out!
What else is special?: At night you can lie in bed and hear the waves breaking on the shore.
In the morning you can watch the sun rise from the roof terrace over the distant hills to the east.
You can watch cormorants flying up river in the evening to roost, skimming the clear waters of the River Mira.
You can look out across the unspoilt forest on the other side of the river, along the cliffs and coastline.
You can catch the summer ferry across the river to the cafe on the beach or drive across the road bridge (out of earshot) to park up on the south bank and walk along the cliffs or through the woods.
You can watch the most amazing sunsets across the red clay roof tiles and out to sea to the west.
Only 10 minutes from the house you can walk to unspoilt cliffs and sand dunes, discover deserted coves and beaches.
It is the most romantic place we can imagine - that's why we bought it!
And if you don't like that.....: you won't be surprised that there really isn't a throbbing night life in Milfontes, so it might not be for you! However there are some cool bars in the town (the Buddha Bar for instance), a trendy surf shop, lots of bars with pool tables etc., the surf school is a great way to meet other people and there are numerous cafes open until late in the evening.
There is excellent surfing nearby and for more adventurous trips out Lisbon is only 2 hours drive and we're told that a trip to Seville is only a bit further ... if you were staying for 2 weeks it would be worth the effort.
Inland Evora and the rest of the Alentejo region offers cultural and historical sights, with day trips and places of interest to visit.
Within an hour's drive are the mountains of Monchique, renowned for good hiking and bird watching, and beyond that is the Algarve, with the coastal towns of Lagos and Faro.
