|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Are you travelling with friends or family? Would you like to stay in an affordable space that can accommodate 3-8 people? Our yurts fit the bill. What is a yurt, you ask? Each yurt is like a studio apartment in an 18 ft. diameter round, wooden structure with canvas siding. The property has 3 yurts. Each yurt has a bed for 2, table and 2 chairs, lounge chair, locking doors, full bath, internet, ceiling fan and fully furnished kitchenette. A nice full size air mattress and futon can be requested for additional sleeping. Covered decks throughout with a lanai deck attached to one yurt. This property is a great way to be 'together' and have your own independent spaces. Families with teenagers...you know what I'm talking about. Bed sizes to choose from are a double, queen or king. Other perks... the neighborhood has a farmer's market on Saturdays at S.P.A.C.E. and a playground. Plan to eat dinner at Kalapana Market on Wed. nights while enjoying live music. The next door Kalani Oceanside Retreat offers meals served buffet-style on an outdoor dining lanai that are vegetarian friendly. Kalani also offers yoga classes, bodywork sessions and community events. Check out their weekly schedule online. Pahoa has several great restaurants, 2 grocery stores and pharmacy. Local tropical sites include Kehena Beach, Ahalanui Warm Pond, Lava State Park, MacKenzie State Park, Steam vents, Kapoho tide pools and Isaac Hale Beach Park. Book your next family & friends’ vacation at the Ohana Yurts!
Mark and Kristine grew up in Illinois. They have lived in Arkansas for the past 12 years. They are raising 2 boys who are teenagers now. Mark and Kristine first visited the Big Island in 2008 as a result of finding Kalani Oceanside Retreat Center. They loved the area so much that they returned each year.
Mark and Kristine Stanley purchased this property in 2011.
In 2011, this property became available and we snatched it up. Our first order of business was to replace all of the decks for our renters comfort and safety. We usually get to visit about 2 times a year. Ohana means family and we chose to name it Ohana Yurts since it is a property that comfortably accommodates our family. So from our family to yours...much Aloha.
This was the perfect spot to begin our vacation in Hawaii. The Big Island has so much to offer and we saw all we could on our first visit! The yurts were a great landing place in between tours, hikes, and beach time. They are spacious and with multiple units this would be a great family destination. The units were clean, have lots of supplies and a convenient washer/dryer. Great local markets to enjoy and the owners provided lots of suggestions. Nice, walkable neighborhood. This part of the island is pretty tropical, but there's porch space if it rains!
It's been a little over a month since I spent eight nights at this property for a girls' vacation. It was simply an excellent setup because the three of us each had our own yurt. Each yurt had their own kitchenette which was well-equipped; each one had their own private bathroom with an open-air shower. Having your own yurt allowed for plenty of privacy, and yet with the adjoining walkways and decks, we could also meet on any given deck for morning coffee and fresh fruit to plan out our daily adventures together. They were also well equipped with towels, beach towels and beach chairs.
The yurts were comfortable with the ceiling fan on which allowed for the crosswinds to flow through. The open air allowed you to hear an occasional rain at night or just let the sound of the coqui frogs lull you to sleep.
The landscaping surrounding these yurts is quite lovely with tropical plants and flowers surrounding the grounds. Loved smelling the plumeria flowers which were in full bloom while I was there!!! The property surrounding the yurts was also an excellent place for us to meet at night and sit back in the lounge chairs while listening to the island sounds and star gazing. Incredible!
This was such a great location, too! Breathtaking views less than a quarter mile, beautiful beaches, lava flow boat tours less than ten minutes away, SPACE farmers market which is held weekly. This is such a great location to call home base which in turned allowed us to take day trips all over the Big Island.
It's a little slice of "paradise" that I'm so glad I was able to experience. Now, I'm left with the wonderful memories of this beautiful island and property and am dreaming of someday, when I will return.
I visited the big island of Hawaii and stayed at this wonderful property. The yurts have all the luxuries of home and a hotel with the private tranquility and atmosphere of Hawaii life. Each of us had our own room(yurt), restroom and shower. It was perfect for a girlfriend reunion.
I enjoyed sleeping with the screens uncovered, hearing the whisper of the wind and rain at night. It was so easy to sleep and relax. We would enjoy breakfast every morning sitting out on the deck and every night kicking back and watching shooting stars.
Also it is located near the most beautiful Hawaiian beaches, views and incredible lava flows. We were able to take day trips to all areas of the island from this location. And if you are lucky enough to stay here you can enjoy the local Kalani retreat center, the local markets and the great community atmosphere. I had the most relaxing, fun vacation and I cannot wait until my next stay.
We have been travelling around the world for 2 1/2 years and Hawaii was the first place we left that our boys actually cried about when we had to leave. I know the yurts had a big part in making our trip to the Big Island that impressionable on them (and us).
I honestly cannot think of anything negative to say about our experience.
We stayed here for almost 2 months in December until the end of January 2013 with our 3 boys. We had never stayed in yurts before so we really did not know what to expect, however after staying in them for one or two nights we were sold. They are just such an awesome concept. We stayed in the larger yurt and the boys slept in the second. During January my wife's parents joined us, and they stayed in the third.
We arrived after dark and were met by Juan, who got us set up, and explained where everything was, and took care of anything that needed attending. The yurts were clean, and everything was ready. Juan was just great.
The property is gated, with a large above-ground pool but the best part is the out-door showers. Each yurt has its own stove, sink, mini-fridge, small workspace, relax-chair and ceiling fan. Washer and dryer are also provided. Hi-speed internet was perfect. We work on-line and conduct video calls all the time - we had no troubles with the connection.
You have not lived until you have a shower outside in Hawaii on a volcano. Or sat on the raised deck sipping a tea during a sudden rain-shower. Or looked up at the amazing star-field in the sky from your yard, or fallen asleep listening to the coquí frogs (you will miss them after you leave).
The SPACE farmer's market was our destination every Saturday morning - just a great mix of people, food and oddities. The yurts are about a 10 minute walk to the ocean, and 15 minutes to Kehena beach. It's a 20 minute drive to Pahoa where you can shop at Island Naturals, an organic food store. Really great selection of local produce.
If you're a 'hotel' type or are looking to stay in a 'house', keep looking. But for a really different experience you need to experience the yurts. My only suggestion for improvement would be a larger fridge, but we managed just fine using the fridges in the other yurts.
When we come back we will have no hesitation using the yurts again.
My husband, 2 sons and friend, Sara, enjoyed our visit to the Puna district. We were very comfortable on this spacious property. Mark and I shared a yurt. The 2 teenage boys shared a yurt. Sara had one to herself. We could congregate in one yurt to play cards or enjoy time alone each in our own space. Beautiful flora was enjoyed on walks through Seaview Estates. This is a safe place to allow kids to roam. Loved the market in the neighborhood on Saturday morning. It was a great place to connect with locals and find out about events. The boys, the thrill seekers, enjoyed the waves at Kehena Beach. We enjoyed several day trips... Green Sand Beach, Rainbow & Pe'e Pe'e Falls, Green Mountain. Don't miss the Kalapana Market on Wed. nights. This is a rural location with everything you need close by. The yurts are great for family or friends traveling together.
This place is like no other place I've stayed before. I knew right when I arrived that I wouldn't want to leave. I was traveling with a group of 5. Three adults and two teenagers. The neat thing with having 3 yurts was that we all had plenty of space. We had space to get together and have dinners and card games as a group, but we also had space to spread out and have our own peace and quiet. There is a nice spot outside to enjoy meals as a group, plus there are three individual kitchens so you can cook for yourself if you would like.
One of the other great things about this little paradise is all of the beautiful plants on the property. You can just walk out your door and see many of the native plants right in your front yard. There is even a pineapple growing right by my stairs. Wouldn't it be cool to be here for harvest time? Speaking of yummy fruit, the farmer's markets here are amazing and a great place to grocery shop for your trip. Market is also a great place to make new friends and find out about things going on in this great little community. There is always something fun to do, so make sure to mingle so you can be in on what is going on.
I really can't say enough about this place. It is literally paradise. A little slice of heaven surrounded by heaven. Doesn't get much better than that.
