My husband and I, along with our 3 sons and their wives and one baby granddaughter stayed at the "Mt. Rose" home while we were in town for the National Bowling Tournament. The very first morning, (Friday Apr 19, 2013) when we awoke, one of our daughters-in-law woke up with bites on her arms. We all figured she got mosquito bites from being outside. The next morning, more bites appeared and again the next morning. By then (Sunday April 21, 2013), the bites were on her legs, shoulder blades and my son (her husband) had them too. That morning, they found 5 bugs on their bedsheets including one on each of their pillows. They put them in a baggie and we called the property owner. Lisa said she'd call an exterminator. That afternoon, the exterminator came and found bed bugs between the mattresses. The exterminator NEVER checked the other beds that the rest of us were sleeping in. They sprayed what smelled like rubbing alcohol and left. Needless to say, NONE of us slept that night. All we could think about was bugs crawling on us. The couple with the bites tried to sleep up in the loft on the leather couches but were not comfortable there either. The bug bites were very itchy! They had to wash ALL of their clothing as they were heading to Yosemite afterwards for a few additional days.
Lisa did not want to take responsibility for the house having BED BUGS!! All she was concerned about was how much money this was costing her. I told her that it would be fair to refund that couple's percentage of the total fee. She refunded 25% of what she had agreed to! Lisa claimed that she had the property cleaned after every renter. Why wasn't checking the beds for bed bugs a routine part of the cleaning process? When a renter is charged a CLEANING FEE shouldn't they be entitled to a CLEAN rental home?
As if the bed bugs weren't bad enough - the dishwasher wouldn't drain so we had 1-1/2 days of washing and drying dishes for 9 people, the master bath toilet handle was cracked, the sauna button fell off in his hand and my husband had to screw it back on with a table knife before he could use it, the outside pool table had ONE cue stick with a tip on it, the dart board had no darts to use, the electrical outlet in the bathroom attached to the BED BUG room didn't work. The maintenance is certainly lacking in this house! This was the most disappointing property we have EVER stayed at and we have been a renter of VRBO properties for 10 years
Owner's Response: In almost ten years of renting houses, I have never had a problem with “bed bugs." Contrary to this lady’s representations, I apologized to her repeatedly and had service people at the house as soon as possible after I was notified of a problem – the dishwasher was repaired Monday morning after she called me Sunday evening and the pest control company was at the house seven hours after I was notified. Obviously, no one can take care of a problem if they don't even know it exists.
I have learned that in recent years, bed bugs have appeared in some of the best hotels in the country, and are not a sign of dirt or incompetent cleaning. They are also not preventable in advance and can only be exterminated when they appear. I had this done very quickly and then repeated a second time. Also, because I wanted to be sure that no bugs remain, I removed the mattress and box spring and replaced them with a new bed. All of the other beds in the house have been inspected and cleared by an exterminator.
I am sorry that this happened, and I have since done everything I can to take care of the bug problem. I regret that this customer was unable to accept my apologies or to recognize that I did all I could as quickly as possible. It is unfortunate, but I cannot make her anger go away.
