A Very Picturesque, Multi-Enjoyable 80-Acre Semi-Forested Farm Located in the Middle of Amish Country, Northwest of Mio, Michigan (Huron National Forest / AuSable State Forest)
The Farm is literally just minutes from AuSable River fishing, swimming, picnicking; canoeing/kayaking/tubing and launch sites. In addition, the Huron National Forest and AuSable State Forest offer hundreds of miles of trails for Hiking, Horseback Riding, ORV, Motorcycle and Groomed Snowmobile trails. By the way, ORV's are allowed on all Oscoda County Roads... Hey Golfers; ever heard of Garland? Just 13 miles away! Not a bad drive to enjoy a few great ones...
Our Farmhouse: Our quaint and cozy farmhouse, with a wrap-around valley view country porch, sleeps 4 to 6 and has been fully renovated (inside and out/top to bottom); especially the refurbishment of the original farm-grown and on-site milled hardwood flooring throughout, including the two upstairs bedrooms. The farmhouse features air-conditioning units on both floors; propane heat; HD TV; Satellite DIRECTV; and Blu-ray Disc/DVD Player. Carbon dioxide, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and emergency lighting also provided. For your arrival security, a pre-assigned coded entry pad (no keys) awaits your private code input. For your convenience, the entry pad allows you to enter your own private entry code for the duration of your stay.
The Living Room consists of a full size La-Z-Boy Sleeper couch that pulls out to comfortably sleep two. An HD TV with DIRECTV and Blu-ray DVD/Disc player rounds out this entertainment center.
Kitchen and Dining Room: The Fully-Equipped Tiled Kitchen, with two tiled entries, is all stainless steel with two electric stove tops, each with overhead venting; oven; micro-wave and oven combination; dishwasher; ice making side-by-side refrigerator/freezer; 12-cup automatic drip coffee maker; electric can opener; blender; mixer; safety toaster; dish towels and wash cloths; and Amish made Hickory cabinets. A gas grill, located just off the end of the lower deck, is also available for your outdoor grilling.
The Dining Room, located between the kitchen and living room, is very handy for preparing and serving snacks or meals from the peninsula stovetop kitchen counter. An antique dining room table, with an overhead stained glass chandelier, can seat six and can be extended to comfortably seat more (or, if nothing else, for the convenient placement of food). It is a warming experience having dinner, and through the dining room windows, watching big snowflakes floating down.
Our Property: The 80 acres consist of rolling/hilly meadows overlooking an awesome panoramic view of miles of the AuSable River Valley Forest; and a 3 acre, spring(s)-fed, stocked pond (beach deep up to 36 feet) featuring a 'right-on-the-shoreline' finished fishing cabin that offers electricity, propane heat, ceiling fan, covered porch and raised fire pit.
The property is as natural as natural can get. . . Groomed trails lead down from the meadows, through hardwood and evergreen forests (consisting of beautiful wooded valleys with four flowing streams) to and through beautiful cedar swamps.
The Pond-Side Finished Fishing Cabin makes for an excellent hangout for tubing, catch and release fishing, etc.
The farm house was well prepared and very accommodating. We loved the front porch for morning coffee and watched the birds. We saw the pileated woodpeckers which was a first. The hummers came regularly. We also experienced a group of about 20 wild turkeys - adults and young and younger ones. The children loved fishing in the pond and paddling their kayaks.
It's been 3 months since my boyfriend and I ventured to Michigan for a little getaway to celebrate our five year anniversary, and we still can't stop talking about it! This place far exceeded both of our expectations! Travel arrangements were tentative and Tina was very flexible, even though we didn't know what we were doing until the night before! We arrived late afternoon and took a walk around the property to see what 80 acres was really all about. Lots of walking/hiking trails both exposed and in the woods, a private lake to walk around, feed the fish, or paddle boat, a firepit, a flock of wild turkeys, a relaxing wrap-around porch, his and hers tvs ;-), chef's kitchen, deer sightings, and an awesome view of the valley/foliage.
Seriously, I could go on and on and on about how much we love this place. The weather did turn cold and rainy so we didn't get to enjoy the outdoors as much as we would have liked, but it was still an awesome experience. CanNOT wait to go back!
We decided to travel to northern Michigan to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving and see the fall colors. We were thoroughly impressed with the entire property. Customer service was impeccable as well. Tina, the owner, responded very quickly to our emails and the property manager even called to check in and make sure everything was to our liking. Everything was so well organized, labelled and so impeccably clean! The check-in, check-out was very well detailed and not a problem. They are even quick to give back your refund! The kitchen appliances appear new. They even have a crockpot on hand that wasn't listed as part of the amenities. They have plenty of facecloths and towels and in the kitchen a very good assortment of spices. They are very safety conscious and have an emergency kit, flashlight, fire extinguisher, smoke alarm, hose, escape ladder, etc. as well as emergency numbers well displayed.
The paddleboat was a favorite of the kids and they have fish food available. Husband loved the fishing cabin and wife enjoyed walking the trails and watching wildlife. Everyone enjoyed the fire pit in the evenings.
We were very comfortable in terms of enough heat at this time of year. There are two TVs and some board games and cards to wind down.
Don't forget to take a canoe or kayak trip on the AuSable river this time a year. It was a wonderful experience. The owners also have all kinds of pamphlets available to browse through about what to do and where to eat in the area.
Many thanks to the owners for sharing their lovely home and to the managers for doing such a fantastic job!
Just perfect. Everything was perfect. It was an excellent way to escape the city life, and remember what is really important: family!
We would recommend this property to anyone. Beautiful home, awesome location. Tina was very accommodating and quick to answer any questions we had. It was close the riding trails and to canoeing. We look forward to another trip next year with the family.
My wife, our 9 month old little boy and I were looking for something that could offer an outdoor experience in a secluded area. When traveling with a baby there's only so many things you can do and as this was our first family vacation so we had high expectations. Most of the rentals we've used from VRBO have not met these expectations and we realize that the photographers must be paid handsomely because what you get isn't always what was shown. This little farm in Mio, MI was more than perfect, it was exactly what we expected from looking at the listing on VRBO. In fact the pictures don't do justice for the pristine and tranquility of this beautiful property! We enjoyed coffee on the large front porch each morning as we watched the fog burn off (the views of the AuSable Valley are amazing!). We found that leaving to do anything wasn't necessary as our days were filled with fishing (and if you don't catch lots of fish then you're doing something wrong) and swimming in the beautifully manicured pond while hanging out at the really cool little fishing cabin. In the evenings we would build a fire and either cook over it or use the nice big grill to whip up something tasty. The kitchen in the little farm house is amazing and allows for more than enough room to prepare meals. Our little guy enjoyed his first fire roasted hot dog and s'more which was great! My wife and I found more than enough to do to keep up occupied when not fishing and swimming. You can play horseshoes, hike one of the many trails right out the backdoor and we brought a Frisbee and kite which was great fun. If you're looking for a fun, quiet, beautiful property for your family vacation and somewhere to connect with nature then I highly suggest you rent this farm! It was more than expected and perfect for us! Be on the lookout for lots of wildlife too! We saw several deer, wild turkey and the many bird feeders on the property attract all different kinds of pretty birds. A big thank you to the property managers for catering to our needs and to the owners for offering such a great retreat! We'll be back!!
