About Dave Bachman

My day job is an enginner for a major IT company, while my hobby is historic home renovation. I am married and we live in the Washington DC area with our 2 children.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, and I love the Laurel Highlands.

Dave Bachman purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Dave Bachman chose Somerset

The atmosphere and setting of this property is breathtaking. It is very close to the resorts and other attractions in the Laurel Highlands, but is an attraction onto itself.

What makes this cabin unique

-Beautiful setting among the stream and woodlands.

- Trail leads directly into state park; makes for great hike or morning jog

- 1 mile/5 min to ski resort. Easy for skiers and nonskiers

-Walk to resturaunt with good food and great prices

- The atomsphere at sunset during the summer on the stone patio and firepit with a nice glass of wine with friends is priceless.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We found the cottage to be right out of a storybook! The sound of the babbling brook outside our window was so soothing that we never closed the windows. While other properties we looked at we're larger, they all paled in comparison to the charm and attention to detail. The kitchen was extremely well equipped, and the high end adjustable Sleep Number mattress was o so comfortable and not something found find in most rentals. While having vintage charm, the cottage was thoroughly up to date where and the craftsmanship is wonderful. We enjoyed every minute of it, from the creek side patio and outdoor firepit, to eating breakfast in the great room with all the windows open and hearing the stream and birds, to the private hiking trails The area offers so many things to do - we thoroughly enjoyed a tour of Fallingwater and great dining options, too (The Out of the Fire Cafe is now our favorite restaurant). In short, the cottage was everything it promised to be and we can't wait to come back!

Beautiful Cabin!!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a charming cabin this is the place! There were 5 of us staying in the cabin which had plenty of room and still had a cozy feeling. We loved the fire pit and the grounds surrounding. This cabin is well stocked for your needs. The great room in the back has a rustic charm which is very relaxing. Definitely feel like you are back in time but with modern updates. Don't hesitate to book!

A very nice, well kept cottage in a terrific area.

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was very nice, clean and had everything you needed. The rear of the property is truly beautiful with the stream and 2 wooden bridges. The front of the cottage is very close to rt 31 but the only issue there was hearing the occassional big truck going by. The area was great with good state parks close by, especially Laurel Hill park about 5 minutes away. TV with basic cable is provided but you only get 5 channels of which one is a shopping channel and one a cartoon channel, so bring lots of DVD's for evening TV watching. The one recommendation i would make to the owner would be to upgrade the lighting, in that the cottage has lots of dark wood and even in the daytime the cottage wasn't bright. There is a restaurant right next door but I wouldn't recommend it for dinner. I would recommend this property to others.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments and suggestions. Would agree regarding the need for additional lighting in some areas, and have had this on our to-do list.

Lovely, wonderful cabin

  • 4 of 5

Sylvania Cottage was a wonderful weekend getaway for my wife & I. We enjoyed sitting in the great room with the sound of Kooser Run outside adding to relaxation. The cottage was very cozy, comfortable & very well equiped for our stay. We will definitely stay here again, possibly this coming summer.

Wonderful stay!

  • 4 of 5

It was a great cozy place to stay with a good bit of space but enough charm to give you a bungalow feel.

We would definitely stay again.
