BEST VALUE FOR THE PRICE

  • 4 of 5
This house is as described. Yes, it's old but is well maintained. The beds are clean and comfortable. The kitchen is fully stocked so we were able to buy groceries and make breakfast in the house. The metro bus stops at the end of the block. Neighbors were extremely friendly. We never felt unsafe coming home after dark. Everything worked properly. For the price, this was an excellent value. We basically only slept and ate breakfast there but were very comfortable. We had ten people and two slept on an air mattress, as described. It was so nice to be able to spend time with family in the mornings and evenings instead of being in separate hotel rooms. The owner was always helpful and friendly. I would stay here again if we come back to DC.

VERY OLD AND TIRED HOME

  • 1 of 5
The property is old and tired with odd size furnitures making the house even smaller. From our previous home stay we were given quality toiletries but not here, we have to buy our own.PICTURES ARE CLEVERLY TAKEN

The carpets was old and we feel there is more to be done to maintain the property to more liveable standards.PROPERTY CLEANLINESS IS BELOW PAR, WE HAD RASHES AFTER WE STAYED THERE

There is one thing which we were not at all happy was when the owner came in to fix the toilet seat without notifying us and we feel our privacy is violated. There are valuables we kept in the house and it would be a major problem if we have to accuse that something is missing. OWNER COMES IN TO MAKE REPAIRS WHEN WE ARE NOT IN WITHOUT OUR PERMISSION

It is important that owners inform us they are coming in and not just come when we are not around. I will never stay in a place where we do not know when the owner comes and go. When we asked the owner, he just said that he will never take a single thing - but the point is he should not have come in when we are not at home. HE SHOULD HAVE FIXED BEFORE WE CAME AND NOT WHEN WE ARE ALREADY IN THE HOME

I do not recommend any to stay here. NEVER RECOMMEND.

We have stayed in Colorado, and Texas and we have wonderful stay with the owners with minimum problems but this is the most disappointing!!!

Owner's Response: First and foremost I thank the guests for giving me the opportunity to host them in my place, but I am not surprised by the review received from them because I questioned them about the malicious damages to the materials in the house during their stay. The previous guests before them checked out late, two hours before these guests arrival. The cleaner informed me that the toilet seat cover was broken and the toilet seat itself was loose and need to be fixed ASAP. I bought a new toilet seat cover that night and called these guests to inform them that I will be coming early in the morning to fix the toilet. The phone did not go through because it is an international number out of USA. I sent an email but no return. I left my house very early in the morning to meet them at the house before they leave for the day.It took me over 1 hour 30 minutes to get to downtown because of the traffic. I got to the house, knocked at the door no answer. I called the cleaner and she explained that if repair is not done and the people continue to use it, it might cause a leak. I had a leak before and it leaked to the living room but it was fixed, and I don't want it to happen again. I opened the door with the spare key and entered the house. I replaced the commode cover seat with a new one and tighened the toilet seat knots. It did not take more than 10 minutes. I left a note for the guests that I have fixed the broken toilet seat cover and also mentioned about the effort made to reach them. I stated in my note that they should please turn off the light and close the water faucets while leaving the house because every light was on and the water was running in one of the faucets. The guests reacted with anger and called my house old and tired. Almost all houses in downtown in most US cities like DC, New York, Philadelphia, Boston are old. To compare Colorado and Texas with the East Coast is a poor compairism because East coast houses are very space conscious. Washington DC is even better in terms of space than Manhattan, New York. The guests moved my furniture around and broke the leg of my dining table, punched hole to the air mattress and broke several glass cups. I just bought another air mattress for the guests that came after.I BELIEVE THAT THESE GUYS WERE ON SOMETHING. It is a bad experience, I don't wish to have this kind of people again. I tried all my best and go extra mile to please all my guests even my past reviewers can testify to this.

QUITE MIXED REVIEWS

  • 3 of 5
Our family of five was supposed to stay in the house with another family of five. They arrived first and phoned us to say they found the neighborhood to be 'sketchy' and never ended up staying there the entire week b/c they didn't feel comfortable with the neighborhood. We decided to stay and had no safety problems at all and found it to be a quiet street and the few neighbors we saw were friendly. We were always home by dark and personally wouldn't feel comfortable walking around after dark.
The positives: 1) The cost - especially if you're splitting it with others 2) the location: It's very conveniently located - very close to bus stop which we took every day to the metro. Aldi and another chain grocery store are just a few minutes drive away which is very handy. 3) Owner is helpful with questions. 4) Kitchen well stocked with dishes/pots/pans although it would have been nice to have a dish towel and dishcloth
The negatives: was not very clean at all. We are definitely not a 5 star hotel family with unrealistic expectations. We have lived and traveled quite extensively internationally in Latin America and have stayed in many more 'simple' accommodations/hotels/lodging facilities that were way cleaner and more appealing than what we found this house to be. There were crumbs on the kitchen bar/counter and the last day when I looked under beds to see if we left anything behind I found a variety of gross items including dust balls, used Q-tips and rotting food in a take-out container so I'm glad I didn't check those areas until the last morning b/c I would have been grossed out all week. Clearly, the area under the beds (at least the two front ones upstairs) were not cleaned in some time.
Also, it advertises 2 parking spots which we definitely planned on since we had reserved it as 2 families both with vehicles. There is only ONE parking spot in the back alley which would have been a major issue if the other family had stayed. It's hard to find a spot on the street and you needed a special permit which was not at the house.
In summary, it worked out fine for our family but nothing to rave about. Thankfully, the other family committed to sharing the cost as planned even though they never stayed there. I would not pay full price again for the condition we found it in but if you need a cheaper place to stay and can split it with others it may be a good option for you if you're willing to look past some of the drawbacks we experienced

WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR

  • 4 of 5
The rental was perfect for our group. Plenty of good-sized bedrooms and comfortable beds. The kitchen is very well stocked with pots and pans, dishes, etc. Very short drive to a grocery store and metro station.

ACCURATE DESCRIPTION OF CLEAN HOME WITH GOOD BEDS

  • 4 of 5
This home was comfortable and the description and pictures are accurate. We enjoyed our stay. We had 10 people and there was plenty of hot water in the showers! The owner is very helpful and checked on us to see that we were all doing well. The home was clean, the beds were comfortable, and all the appliances worked well. I would recommend this property. We would stay here again.
