Nice location; BUT in need of TLC / up-keep...

Nice location, on a quiet cul-da-sac. House was NOT clean when we arrived! Dirty dishes in the
dishwasher, used towels/wash cloths in one shower, and waste baskets had NOT been emptied. (Alcohol bottles, used q-tips, "used" feminine products in BR waste basket.) There was dried tooth paste in sinks, soap trail running down the shower, where an old used bar of Dial still remained. Carpeting in the down stairs bedroom,and family room, had not been swept in quite some time... Basicially we were grossed out when we first arrived. Was quite obvious, that it had not been looked after/cleaned prior to our arrival!!! The owner requested that we give his brother, (who lives at the property above the garage) $50-$100 when we arrived, for cleaning the place! The hot tub water had NOT been treated~we did not realize it until we got in. Horrible odor of mildew/black pieces of scum floating everywhere. We both got red raised skin bumps, after being in the tub for less then 15 minutes. We mentioned it to the brother, and he came right over, and put a powered chemical in the water. (Should have been done before our arrival.) The floors were filthy, and if we wore white socks, they were gray to almost black in no time. The half bath on the main floor had a bowel movement in it, that had not been flushed! We are in our late fifties, and were very disappointed to have a not very nice note left taped to the garbage can one day, by the brother of the owner, that lives at the property. As we traveled from Ohio, we tossed some used glasses in the trash can when we arrived. There were two empty Chic-filet glasses. The note stated that we should not throw DQ glasses in the garbage, as they may leak and draw raccoons... We don't go to DQ! The A/C upstairs kept tripping the breaker. We e-mailed the owner, as he had NOT returned our call. (Was in the high 80's & 90's while we were there. Good thing we were able to get it working ourselves... The dock is totally unacceptable, as it is old, and missing the floatation device, that keeps it from sinking, when you step onto it. Made it impossible to dock our boat, and walk out to the dock safely... The brother had to come in and out of the the property on Sunday, seven times! He had to bring in his personal items to put in a closet upstairs. Folks were arriving onThurs., he moved items from the garage apt. where he lives, to the home we were staying, so folks could stay there. First day we had to buy toilet paper and paper towels. EEK!
Owner's Response: I am sorry that these guests had so many problems. The house was indeed cleaned prior to their arrival, and I have not had any problem with cleanliness before now. In fact I doubt that all the problems mentioned in this review are true. However, I will pay closer attention in the future that the house is satisfactorily cleaned before every guest.
The hot tub was recently repaired and placed back into service. I wish the guests had let me know that it was not adequately cleaned. I could have had it drained, cleaned, refilled with fresh water and running again within 24 hours. I used the hot tub last week and it was great!
Indeed, the dock was missing a flotation device (although no guest had complained about it previously, and my parents, both in their 70's, access the dock without difficulty). Still, I have since added a float under the dock's walkway which should fix this problem.
It is unfortunate that the upstairs A/C unit quit working while these guest were staying. It is a bother to have to change to a downstairs bedroom mid-visit. I arranged for a repairman who came the next day and fixed the problem. The upstairs A/C is working fine now.
Finally, I am easily reached by phone or email. And if any problems arrise during a guest's stay, I will do everything I can to remedy the situation as quickly as possible.
I am sorry that these guests did not feel comfortable. I try to be a thoughtful home-owner and strive to make my home inviting and comfortable for all my guests.
