Fabulous Place-Unfortunate Experience

  • 3 of 5

We stayed at Casa Tres Amigos for a week with two other couples and the place was absolutely spectacular and delightful, fully meriting all of the five star ratings it has received. Unfortunately, our otherwise five star experience was seriously marred by a home invasion theft that occurred while we slept. The thieve(s) came into our second floor bedroom and stole wallet, watch, I-pad and back packs all located on our headboard not more than three feet from our pillows. We are thankful that no one was awakened or it could have been worse. We believe access was gained through the second floor veranda. Securing first floor access points proved insufficient. So the word of warning is, do not underestimate the risk of theft, even while you are present. All valuables must be secured in the in room safes provided and you must remain security conscious at all times. It is apparently an unfortunate fact of life in Akamal, and one we hope will be avoided by all who follow.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. How awful to have this happen on your vacation. We try our best to provide a safe and secure home for our families and guests and continue to make any home improvements that are needed. For guests staying at our home we ask that they pay particular attention to security and we stress the importance of locking the house up before going to sleep. We provide a list of personal security recommendations to help you have a trouble free vacation. Our friends and family have been visiting Akumal for over 15 years years and have always felt very safe here. This is a good reminder to us all that this can happen anywhere. Sincerely Thelma&Peter

Relaxing week in an architectural beauty

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a wonderful week at Casa Tres Amigos in Akamal, Mexico.

The house is an architectural gem, lovingly designed by the owners and built of the highest quality materials. There are inlaid tiles, brick vaulted ceilings, and a rooftop "palapa" where we would sit every evening to watch the moonrise and sunset. The view is gorgeous, right on a quiet beach. We could walk for an hour in each

direction. There are three large bedrooms with king beds, a fully equipped kitchen, private landscaped grounds, and daily housekeeping by a lovely woman who also made dinner for us two evenings. The owner/manager, Thelma, and next-door neighbor/manager, Horacio, were always efficient, responsive and very friendly.

Horacio arranged for a driver to take us to the nearby ruins in Tulum and other sites. There are several good restaurants in the nearby town of Akamal, where there is a diving center and snorkeling beach. The pool is beautiful and refreshing. We would recommend Casa to anyone who wants a relaxing, quiet vacation is a beautiful and secure home in a lovely setting. Our grandchldren couldn't come but there are lots of water parks and activities close to Playa del Carmen for children.

Put those travel books away - You will NEVER want to leave this amazing house and beach!!!

  • 5 of 5

We came down as two families with five kids ages 8-13 with all these planned outings and hardly left the house. It was too incredible to leave. The villa with the openings on both levels made it feel like we were outside even when in. The sound of crashing waves never left us and waking up to the sun rising didn't get old. Everyone loved the pool and when it was too dark to swim in the ocean, the kids swam in the pool. The bedrooms were clean, comfortable and very tastefully decorated. Every kid begged to sleep on the hammocks on the rooftop palapa and we all had turns. We walked up and down the beach in the morning and kept saying - "we have the best piece of beach right in front of the house!" We snorkeled every day directly in front of the house and saw turtles and stingrays - every time! The kayaks and boogie boards were used everyday. The house is very well stocked and had all our favorite games. We had the housekeeper cook for us one night after our day in Chichin Itza (our only outing) and the smells from the kitchen were mouth watering. We are already planning to come back next year.

For a perfect vacation stay here!!

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a week at this property with my parents in their upper 60's and my Brother's family (a total of 11 people including 5 children ages 9-12.) We had a wonderful time here. If you are looking for a place to get away and relax, this home is absolutely perfect.

What we loved about the home was that it felt very safe nestled within a gated with access just a few feet down onto the beach. There are several floors so with all the laughing of the children it was easy to get away and take a nap or get some space. We especially loved the hammocks on the the roof and my Mom and I tried to sleep out there one night which was really fun listening to the crickets and the ocean. Best of all was the living room and the doors that completely open out onto the pool. We sat and drank wine, listening to waves. Lovely!

The only problem we had was the floors are very slick. My Mom fell twice and the kids a couple of times as well. We all had to be very careful. I believe most issues stemmed from water being dripped in from swimming - so just be carefully with that. The wifi only worked for us upstairs and close to the office which was a slight inconvenience if you need to do some work while vacationing.

We visited many places like the Interactive Zoo and the Monkey Sanctuary. Both were loads of fun holding and feeding monkeys, alligators, snakes, etc. The kids loved it!

But - the house could not have been better and it was very nice having someone to come in and clean up/make beds to ensure that you were truly on vacation. Thanks so much!

Very nice home in great part of Mayan Riviera

  • 4 of 5

Pros: Beautiful newer home, very well layed-out, in great part of the Mayan Riviera. The entire west “wall” of the downstairs was a sliding glass door that would completely open up to the pool area. The ocean view was perfect. The home comfortably held 6 adults and 5 children (children in beds on the floor). Very quiet at night (no human noises … just the surf and/or the wind). The staff was friendly and helpful (except towel situation below). The kitchen, living room, bedrooms and bathrooms were well-situated, roomy and comfortable.

Cons: We very much enjoyed our stay, but I would be remiss if I did not list a few shortcomings of the property. A huge drawback is slippery floors. The house has smooth-surfaced tiles, probably installed because they are easy to keep clean, but they are only feet away from the pool. Even though we were as careful as possible, we did have kids going back and forth, and would get wet spots. My 68-year old mother fell twice! Also, WiFi signal is only strong enough for use in the office, which does not have AC. It felt as if the towels and toilet paper were rather rationed. There were four in our room, we were given two towels on the first day. I had to ask for more and they wouldn’t always replace them, even when left on the floor. I had to ask for towels at least four times during our week long stay. The DVD player doesn’t work.

The beach: There is a very small dune between the beach and the house that maintains the view of the water while providing privacy from folks walking up and down the beach (the beach isn’t crowded). For most groups this will be a positive, but if you have smaller kids that you would like to watch play on the beach from the comfort and shade of the patio, the dune is in the way. There are submerged rocks right at the shore, so ingress and egress from the water is tricky. But there are plenty of folks enjoying the beach. For the kids, I did prefer the beach at Akumal, just down the road.

Summary: We very much enjoyed our stay at Tres Amigos. I tend to list the cons and take the positives for granted. I have visited the Riviera Maya many times and Tres Amigos is definitely one of the better properties I have visited (if not for the floors, one of the best). The Akumal location is great for getting away from the Cancun crowds and getting close to many great activities.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay and thank you for the positive email sent to me the last day of your holiday(posted below) It seemed like everyone had a fabulous time. I was sorry to hear that the tile floors in the kitchen/living room were a problem. The area around our pool is non-slip concrete and we have long mats to the entrance of the house so guests can dry off before going into the tiled area. If the tile floors do get wet they are slippery and the water has to be wiped up to avoid any falls. Our property manager is looking into the DVD and reviewing the towel and toilet Paper distribution with our staff. Thanks you so much for the feedback Thelma&Peter, Cathie&Spencer, Red&Marcia

Turquoise Ocean Views from the Lap of Luxury

  • 5 of 5

To celebrate one of hubby's "bigger" birthdays, we rented this beautiful home for a special vacation with our adult children. It is spacious, extremely well-appointed, yet very comfortable. There were three couples in our group and we all had plenty of space. With all the balconies and roof top palapa, there were ample opportunities to getaway to enjoy a book while listening to the crashing surf. The pool overlooking the ocean is a dream come true and is surrounded with very comfy patio furnishings!! Walks on the beach were a daily occurrence because it is simply gorgeous. The provided boogie boards were put to good use too! So fun. The caretakers did a fantastic job and the property manager (just next door) is very friendly and helpful with suggestions for restaurants and activities. Thelma (one of the owners) was quick to respond with any questions and wonderful to work with. We would absolutely LOVE to return to this home for another dream vacation. It simply couldn't have been better and the memories will always be cherished!
