An adventure aboard Storm Petrel can take you places only accessible by boat. Unpack once, and see the best the US and BVI have to offer. Captain Phil is a native Bostonian, has lived in Guadeloupe, St Thomas, traveled throughout the Caribbean and knows these areas well. He is a knowledgeable companion for your get-away, an avid sailor and wind surfer, who can teach you the finer points of sailing, or let you relax and enjoy the sail. Chef Laura will cater to your dietary whims and delight your palate with her fresh creations. She is also a cardiac nurse, licensed captain, avid sailor and fisherman. Storm Petrel is available for vacations of a week or more for 2-4 guests. Storm Petrel is a sturdy, seaworthy and safe 48' steel sloop. Outside, she has full sun protection with the covered cockpit and dodger, extra high life lines for safety and comfortable seating. Inside, she is dry and snug, well ventilated. Every day a new island awaits, and every room is waterfront with great views
Your trip: Your trip aboard Storm Petrel starts at Red Hook, St Thomas. From there, the possibilities are endless...a sail to St John, snorkeling or hiking in National Parks, sailing to Tortola, to experience the British Virgin Islands or just relaxing on the boat, watching the sunset as you sip a 'Petrel Passion', the captain's own rum and passion fruit cocktail. With Phil's 20 years of experience in the Caribbean, we know the best snorkeling spots, and everything each island has to offer, from quiet anchorages to vibrant beach bars. Every vacation is customized to what YOU want to do, not based on a preset itinerary. For the truly adventurous, trips to the Spanish Virgin Islands or St Martin can be arranged.
Your accommodations: Storm Petrel is a center cockpit sloop, that allows for a king size bed in the aft cabin. The forward cabin contains 2 single berths, that can be made into a large double by use of an insert. This is perfect for siblings or 2 couples. The main salon is spacious enough to comfortably seat 6 for dinner. There is a hot water shower on deck, conveniently located near the swim ladder, perfect for the after snorkel rinsing. The deck hatches allow for stargazing from your bed, and the tropical breezes keep you cool at night. We have snorkel gear to fit your party, and carry a windsurfer on board. Scuba diving can be arranged through local shops.
Requirements: A US Passport is NOT required for sailing in the US Virgin Islands (St Thomas, St John, and St Croix). or for the Spanish Virgin Islands (unspoiled islands of Vieques, Culebra and Culebrita) A passport is required for entry into the British Virgin Islands or any other Islands. We are a casual, barefoot cruising vacation. No starched shirts or dinner jackets on this boat! A few swim suits, shorts and t-shirts will take you through a week of island hopping. You don't need to keep opening your wallet, as we include everything except the bar, so it can be stocked to your exact preference. You don't need to worry about food, as all of your meals are prepared for you. Cruising taxes into the BVI and moorings, when necessary, are not included.
Captain Phil is the owner of Storm Petrel. He has been chartering in the Caribbean and Cape cod since 1992. He is a USCG licensed captain, speaks German, some French and Spanish. He has lived in Guadeloupe, Switzerland, and wherever Storm Petrel takes him. The co-owner and co-captain of Storm Petrel is Laura, an RN for over 25 years. She loves cooking, sailing, and fishing, and has been Phil's charter partner for the past 9 years.
Phil and Laura purchased this yacht in 1990
Phil is a native Bostonian, and knows these waters well. For summer sails in the cape, leaving from Falmouth, the sail can take you across Buzzards Bay to the Elizabeth Islands, Cuttyhunk, or longer sails can go to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. In the winter, St Thomas is easily accessible by commercial flights. Red Hook is at the east end of the island, and an ideal starting point for your charter vacation. The US Virgin Islands of St John and St Croix are an easy trip, and the beautiful British Virgin Islands are not more than a few hours sailing away.
The ultimate way to traverse the Islands is by boat, drifting from one island to the next, sleeping under a million stars. Chartering Storm Petrel allows you to create your own schedule, with no ferries to catch, and no rush to check out of a hotel in the morning. She can take you to places only accessible by boat, and you always have a waterfront room! Storm Petrel is a safe and comfortable sailboat. She makes her yearly trips to the US Virgin Islands for the winter, to Cape Cod for the summer, for chartering in both locations.
We would like to thank you very much for this wonderful 10 days on board Storm Petrel-the iron lady. We never expected this much. (St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. Martin, Antigua, and back!) You let us be part of your "family". We hope to come back again.
This review is long overdue!! (Sorry Phil and Laura) Anyway, our family of three sailed with Phil and Laura for 5 days this past March and had a fabulous time! Laura and Phil were the most gracious hosts! Not to mention Laura's cooking.....AWESOME! Phil was an amazing guide through the V.I., and Laura took us snorkeling in some amazing spots! She even snorkeled with my 9 year old and held his hand when the waters got a little rough. Thanks so much guys! We look forward to seeing you again next year!
My husband and I had such a great time with Phil and Laura on Storm Petrel! The boat is so spacious, well appointed and she sails beautifully! My husband and I got to sail her as much as we wanted, which was almost the whole four days! Phil and Laura were such gracious hosts- offered great suggestions as to where to moor, great sites to see on land in each spot, and prepared incredible meals and drinks! Laura makes an awesome margarita! This was our second sailing adventure with them and we will definitely book with them again!

Fun, sun, sail, gourmet food, and all around wonderful experience! This came as no surprise to us (quite frankly) as we had sailed with Phil & Laura in New England last July. This time we met them in St. Thomas and set sail for several out-of-the- way places that we had never had the opportunity to experience but always wanted to see.
Phil & Laura are extremely accommodating and can tailor activities, destinations, & fun according to your particular taste. And speaking of taste, you've got to enjoy Laura's culinary creations--simply outstanding and "clever" as well.
We highly recommend Storm Petrel! Thank you again Phil & Laura for our wonderful adventures and memories!
This was our first experience staying in a sailboat, and Laura and Phil made our stay an amazing experience, Laura's cooking is incredible, and both Phil and Laura cater to your preferences in terms of activities. Whether snorkeling, scuba, beach, hiking, paddle board or anything else they can do for you, they will find a way to make your stay a great one.
We visited several islands, snorkel in caves, and saw some of the most amazing coral reefs. Also fish, but more importantly relaxed.
We will recommend Storm Petrel to any family or couple that likes adventure, the islands and sailing..
Phil and Laura did a great job showing us true open ocean sailing on a very well equipped boat. Phil's 25+ years sailing experience with completion of many 1,500 mile open ocean trips (in this boat) allowed for a unique perspective to small sailboat capabilities. The gorgeous coves we anchored (only available to small boats) allowed for very secluded, relaxing and beutiful backdrop to the wonderful weather in the islands. Laura's cooking was fantastic, there is no reason to dine off the boat. Phil was very entertaining to our 17 year old son (and to us). Laura is the perfect host. Storm Petrel is a real sailing ship with Phil demonstrating the full safe capability of trans ocean sailing system in open seas. Note: we requested this and it does require a significant personal tolerance to the pitching and "keeling" of a traditional sailboat. Other more sedate sailing is thier normal mode. As this is a 48 ft. boat, it is close quarters, it is perfect for 2-3 guests maybe a little crowded with 4 adult guests. We had great dive/snorkel locations off the boat (small coves) and easy dive boat meeting for more advanced dives. Laura is a licensed RN with the ability to take care of most common injuries with an active group (we did not require any stitches or staples, but she was equipped).
My adult daughter and I (age Young 70) thoroughly enjoyed our week. Our hosts were very accomodating to our needs and interests. The property was well maintained, and we enjoyed smooth sailing around the islands. Our chef was amazing. We were very pleasantly surprised with the great culinary creations that came out of that small galley. They were as good or better than most five star restaurants. We are planning on scheduling another trip aboard Storm Petrel in the very near future. Would definitely recommend this to friends or relatives.
Red Hook is the quiet end of St. Thomas. It offers local bars and shops, incase you find you've forgotten something, or just want to start with a cold beverage. From there, we sail to your desired destinations, be it the National Parks of St. John, the unspoiled beauty of the Spanish Virgins, or the variety of the British VIrgin Islands. The choice is yours!
Other Activities: para-sailing rentals, kayak rentals
