Somesville House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 to 7 Bedroom & 4 Baths, Spectacular view, large lawn & 2 porches

Spacious historic home with large well furnished rooms many with good views. Works for 6 or 14 people as we can close a wing. Perfect for families with a well stocked kitchen for cooking. Enjoy the view to Somes Sound, swim at Somes Pond, rent kayaks, and be centrally located to Acadia Nat’l Park!

LOCATION ON THE ISLAND: We are in the center of the island 10 minutes to Acadia National Park's Ocean Drive and the Cadillac Mountain entrance. Somesville is the perfect location, 12 minutes to Bar Harbor and 7 minutes to Southwest. The free Island Explorer Bus stops about 200 feet from the house and is an easy way for all your family to explore on their own. The bus will even take your bike as well!

ABOUT THE HOUSE: 'Willowbrook' is a Classic Greek Revival home built in the 1800s. The interior is comfortable with 3 couches, good beds, lots of space and lovely linens and towels.

THE VIEW: Enjoy your view of the morning dew rising from the Mill Pond. View the yachts and boats as they finish their journey down Somes Sound to the Harbor. Look to the mountains of Acadia! From the side rooms we view the historic Somesville Bridge which is often illuminated at night.

INTERIOR OF “WILLOWBROOK”

FIRST FLOOR: This is a spacious home which can accommodate 14 people comfortably with 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. Inside is a charming interior with wide painted plank floors and colorful rooms. First floor has an entrance hall with staircase, master suite with queen bed and bathroom with a 6-foot claw tub. There is an additional bedroom with full bed. The Library-Parlor has a couch and leather gaming table with a good selection of family games. The living room has two couches, 32” screen TV with Dish TV service and seating for 12. The dining room seats 12-15 and has a sideboard for serving and an extra drop leaf table as well. There is a pantry with several sets of dishes. The kitchen is well equipped for all kinds of cooking and baking. There are plenty of pans, bowls, and platters for large groups. There is a breakfast bar area for morning coffee and pastries with a microwave. There is a kitchen table that seats 6, washer/dryer and back staircase leading to the second floor.

SECOND FLOOR: Upstairs the left wing has a charming queen bedroom with a spectacular water view. The second bedroom has a full size bed. Next to both rooms is a dressing closet with a bathroom with a shower. The right wing has a large bedroom with 2 single beds, a roll away cot, TV and another bedroom with 2 single beds. There is a bathroom with a shower. The 7th bedroom has a staircase to the kitchen, a double bed, and bathroom with a tub.

EXTERIOR OF “WILLOWBROOK”: We have front and back porches with plenty of seating and 2 chaises. There is a patio with a wrought iron table for 6 and a gas grill. Play croquet on the large lawn for family fun. Kayak and swim in Somes Pond up the street or Long Pond a few minutes from the house.

HISTORY OF THE HOUSE: Somesville is where Abraham Somes, the first permanent settler on Mt Desert lived. The house was built for Abraham Somes III, the namesake and grandson of the first settler of Mt. Desert Island. Abraham lived there with his wife Adeline Freeman Somes. Abraham was a shipbuilder and traveled to the West Indies, New Haven, Boston and Portland. This home is still owned by Somes descendants and is listed on the National Historic Register. It was once rented to the poet, Elinor Wylie and Thomas Berger, author of Little Man, Big Man.

ABOUT THE VILLAGE OF SOMESVILLE: Somesville is the quintessential New England village full of white clapboard houses. The entire village is a National Historic Landmark. It is situated at the end of Somes Sound which cuts through the middle of the island. Somes Sound is the only fjord on the east coast. It is the perfect place to end your day on the island.

The Somesville Library, The Gallery at Somes Sound, and The Mt. Desert Island Historical Society, and its picturesque bridge are across the street. Diana, the owner, is an artist in the Gallery at Somes Sound.

Enjoy a stroll through Somesville and soak in the charm. If you are lucky, you may catch the Blueberry or Strawberry Festival.

Somesville has a well-stocked convenience store, bank, ATM, church, post office, and a great summer stock theater, the Acadia Repertory Theater. Walk up to the children’s plays on Wednesday and Saturday. They are really a treat for all ages. Three golf courses within 10 minutes! Wonderful dining choices are only seven minutes away.

We live about 2 miles away from the house. We are available to answer questions to make sure you have a wonderful visit to Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. We have a wealth of information about the island which we love to share. We are also available to help if there are any problems during your stay.

AIRPORTS: The closest airport is Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) which is about 10 minutes from Willowbrook. Then Bangor International Airport (BGR) is one hour. There is a shuttle to Mt. Desert from the Bangor airport. You need to make a reservation and it is about $30. The cheapest fares seem to be from Southwest Airlines flying into Manchester, New Hampshire, which is a 5 hour drive to Willowbrook. There are also good fares with Air Tran into Portland. You can rent a car from Hertz or Enterprise.

SWIMMING:

Somes Pond - Fresh water pond - Take a right out our driveway and it is 1/4 of a mile up the road on the left. There is a grassy area which leads into the pond.

Long Pond - Head toward Southwest Harbor and take a right at the Firehouse and go about 2 miles it will be on your left. There is a dock to swim out to and it is great for kids. There is also a 2 miles hike from the south end out to Duck Rock which is a huge rock great for swimming for all ages.

Echo Lake - 3 miles toward Southwest Harbor Man-made beach on a fresh water lake perfect for children. Changing rooms/Shallow for at least 200 feet out

Sand Beach - on Ocean Drive is a lovely beach on the Ocean Drive one of the 10 most scenic drives in America. There is a great hike from the opposite side you enter the beach called 'The Great Head' hike. Also this is close to the entrance to the Beehive Hike.

BOATING AND KAYAKING:

National Park Canoe rental - You can rent kayaks, canoes or paddle boards on Long Pond. You can kayak on Long Pond out to Rum Island.

We can also provide information on the rental of sailboats or power boats.

FAVORITE HIKES:

Easy Trails: Flying Mountain, Beech Mountain, South Bubble

Moderately Difficult Trails

Giant Slide up Sargeant Mountain, Penobscot, Pemetic, The Beehive

BIKING:

Carriage Roads - What is a carriage road? It is the perfect place to walk, hike, and bike. There are over 57 miles of carriage roads on Mt. Desert. Our favorite is the road that runs around Eagle Lake. Eagle Lake is a lovely place for a picnic as well. There are two bike rental shops on the island to rent bikes.

PLACES TO PICNIC- A MOUNT DESERT TRADITION:

Mom's Kitchen makes wonderful sandwiches near Town Hill about a mile from the house. You can call ahead and pick them up on your way off for the day.

Sargeant Drive - is great for a picnic

Ocean Drive - in Acadia National Park

Seawall - outside Southwest Harbor.

We want our guests to fully experience the island and all it has to offer!

About The Owner

As a young child, my parents brought us to Mt Desert. I have always been in love with the island and wanted to capture its magic. I have a masters in Art History and Museum work and worked in the Smithsonian before raising three children. I have always been in love with the quality of light in Maine. I paint on the island in the summer and you can see my work at the Gallery Somes Sound in Somesville near the house.

The Owner purchased this house in 1968

Willowbrook

Wonderful old house !!! Property is great for dogs and kids and the porch has a gate that closed so we could sit and have coffee without tying the dogs out. Great location for heading out on adventures all over the island. Each family could take their own space or enjoy each other's company. Kitchen had everything we needed...even for a lobster dinner! Landlord was wonderful!

Our family reunion at Willowbrook

  • 5 of 5
Willowbrook was a perfect house for our week-long family reunion. We had 16 people, including a baby, a toddler, and four other children. The dining room and living room gave us places to gather, and the seven bedrooms and four bathrooms gave us privacy. The kitchen is well equipped for meal preparation and cleanup. We ate most of our meals at the home.

We enjoyed the history of the home and furnishings. But we were comfortable letting our kids play in the house. With reasonable supervision, they did not destroy any of the antiques. All of us, especially the kids, enjoyed the large fenced yard.

We enjoyed the location, across the street from the Somesville museum and the library. And the house is on a bus line, with a bus stop in front of the house. The bus ride to Bar Harbor is 25 minutes, quicker and more pleasant than driving and parking.

Fabulous, fascinating house

  • 5 of 5
I'd recommend this spacious, historic house for anybody who wants to enjoy Mount Desert Island while avoiding the crowds of Bar Harbor. All the rooms were large and well-furnished, many with good views; the house had fascinating old objects in every corner. It easily absorbed our 12-person party ranging in age from early 20s to late 50s, and when 7 more friends staying elsewhere came over for dessert there was plenty of space for everyone. We enjoyed playing croquet on the large lawn, relaxing on the side porch with its view of Somes Sound, swimming in nearby Long Pond, and exploring both the western and eastern sides of the park on foot, bicycle, and by car. The kitchen in the house is well suited for cooking and baking.

We also enjoyed meeting both the owner Diana and the caretaker Dave, who were happy to give us excellent advice on local activities. Thanks to them for a wonderful week!

Charming, spacious, historic home

  • 5 of 5
I would recommend this rental to any large group that appreciates a spectacular location, genuine historic status (a Park Ranger at the top of Cadillac Mtn made reference to Abraham Somes!), and the convenience of being close to Bar Harbor and the magnificent features of Acadia National Park. The house is very comfortable. The beds were fantastic and the kitchen updated so that we felt we had one foot in the 21st century. The porches were a great place to read and relax, and admire the view. We were grateful to have the chance to bring our small dog who enjoyed the big yard. Diana is a wonderful resource for any information about MDI or activities you might want to plan. My family and I would definitely rent this lovely home again.

Notes:
We are in the center of the island which means less travel time for guests to each area of the island. The free Island Explorer stops up the street. A fresh water pond is up the street as well. Great space for families with two living room areas and 3 wings for privacy. It is very special to wake up to our view and live in a home full of the history of Mount Desert! When you come home after a day on the island it will be a treat to enjoy 'Willowbrook' the home of Abraham Somes III grandson of the first settler of Mount Desert.
