Photos and Description of the Limoux vacation apartment rental
In the heart of the Cathar country in a market town close to airport.

Two charming self-catering apartments beautifully renovated in a fine historic building, pre-dating 13th C. This unique house, once the dwelling of an aristocratic family, and reputedly a residence of the King of Aragorn in the 13th century, elegantly overlooks the river whilst keeping a warm and welcoming feel to make your stay relaxing and comfortable for adults and children. The 2 spacious apartments are independent, have fully equipped kitchens/dining areas and large bathrooms with baths and showers. Guests often comment on the unique decorations, a real feature, and wonder at the historical traces of it's long history.

In the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, Limoux is ideally placed for exploring the many medieval abbeys, Cathar castles and wineries that are found nearby. The town is renowned for its Blanquette, the 'original' champagne, for its Carnival which lasts for 3 months from mid-January, and the Tocques & Clocher wine festival. You can walk along the river to the restaurants of the town, and all services that you might need are close. We are quickly reached from Carcassonne airport at 22 kms.

Having lived in the area for nearly 25 years we specialize in being able to give full advice tailored to each guest's different needs. Be it in knowing where to go for sight-seeing, good restaurants, interesting wine caves, local arts and music festivals, walks of all levels, we are more than happy to pass an pleasant 30 minutes over a glass of wine planning your next day's trip. But only if you want to!

Winter breaks, ski and sight-seeing: Being in town and near Carcassonne airport, the Maison de Lali is very suitable for winter breaks. The sun shines here throughout much of the year - we have known it to be 24° centigrade in the January. There is a full sized golf course (with an excellent bistro and top-class restaurant) less than half an hours' drive away on the Limoux side of Carcassonne. The nearest ski slope is at Camurac about 1 hour away, with Les Angles, Pyrenees 2000 and Andorra easily accessible for a day's skiing. The Cathar castles are wonderful at any time of year, and a visit to the Mediterranean sea is always stimulating. There are good art galleries in Toulouse, Ceret and Sigean, and the famous carnival of Limoux lasts for 13 weeks staring in january. Of course, there is always the wine of the region to sample, and especially Blanquette of Limoux, the 'original' champagne. Recently our local mountain - the Pic de Bugarach - has been headlined worldwide. It is a wonderful place, and easily climbable.

Pets are welcome; visitors are allowed one dog (more only by prior arrangement) but it must not be left unattended in your accommodation. Visitors must make sure their pets do not cause damage to property or to get onto furniture.

Bird Watching in the Aude: Jonathan is a keen birder and a member of the steering committee of the League de Protection d'Oiseaux de L'Aude. He is happy to give advice as to local spotting, and will also accompany groups for a small fee. The Aude is very rich in habitats, from the coastal wetlands to the high mountains, with moorland, river valleys and forests in between. There are nearly 200 nesting species recorded in the Aude, with some very special rarities amongst them; Egyptian Vulture, Lammergeier, Eagle Owl, Golden Eagle, Blue-rock Thrush, Red-rumped Swallow, Alpine Swift, just to name a few that could be of interest to birders. The coastal wetland at Gruissan is a main migration corridor of France, with birds funnelled between the Mediterranean sea and the high mountains of the Pyrenees. There were over 35000 raptors recorded in 2011. It is also interesting for overwintering species, like Flamingos, Advocets, Wallcreepers, Accentors.

Guests comments.: 'your home is amazing and has everything we needed to make for an incredibly comfortable and relaxing vacation. We can't express enough how much your generosity meant to us. Indeed, you helped make our trip very memorable!!' B.&C.Love, Saratoga Springs N.Y.

'You have obviously worked hard to restore this lovely building, retaining its' character for future generations. The setting is stunning......' C.&P.Dickenson, Hereford, U.K.

'Staying here is like living in a painting. The building itself, so rich in history and strength of character, provides a feeliong of peace and tranqulility'. B.Jackson, Texas.

'Angèle and Jonathan - what an amazing experience we have had staying in your home by the river. Full of stories and so much history! Thank you for your warm welcome and interesting conversations'. Family Trussell, Sydney Australia.

Details for Swallow Apartment 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4, 1 Bathroom

Set in the oldest building of Limoux (somewhat romantically known as the King of Aragon's house - unproven, but ceratinly it has aristocratic origins) we spent many years restoring this fine old building with our own hands. With our skills of cabinet maker and painter-artist we worked together to bring out the best of this fascinating building, and its many unique features. The first floor apartment has been completely rebuilt to make a lovely holiday space for up to 4 people. There are 2 bedrooms, the main one overlooking the river and the other which we call the Maid's room on the other side of the building. There is a fully equiped kitchen with good modern appliances, a dining area and a balcony overlooking the courtyard. The main bedroom is large enough to double up as a living area with satellite T.V; DVD and internet connection.

About Jonathan Kemp

Angèle is Dutch, born in Zeeland but moved to Amsterdam for her education and career as an artist. Jonathan is English, born in Bath, making his living as a cabinet maker and woodworker before moving to the area in 1989. We met shortly before buying the house together, in a remote hamlet where Jonathan was restoring an old building.

Jonathan Kemp purchased this apartment in 1994
Why Jonathan Kemp chose Limoux

Having lived in Limoux for several years, we always said that we would buy a house on the river if one came up for sale. Walking the dog one Boxing day there was a for sale sign on one of the impressive but decrepit old buildings overlooking the water. Structurally it was sound, but everything needed doing, having been empty for at least 30 years. It has taken us 15 years to complete, having done virtually all the work ourselves, finding many wonderful and individual features as we went along. The local people described it as the 'King of Aragou's house', a trace memory when the Aragonese kingdom had a northerly border in Limoux in the 13th & 14th centuries. We live upstairs, in the 3rd floor apartment.

What makes this apartment unique

To overlook a major river is an unique advantage, and constantly there is life out there, ducks and birds, much increased since we have been here by the trees that have grown. It was hard work, but to inherit such a fine old building with so much history and individuallity is rare privilege. Revealing the old stones, hidden arches and niches as we went along was a voyage of discovery.

Set on the river, the house is in Limoux, the centre of a wine producing area that has rapidly gained status for its BLANQUETTE and other wines. Reputedly the method is the original for champagne, and this fine sparkling wine was developed at the nearby Abbey of St.Hilaire. There are many wine caves in area to visit, for both tasting and buying your wines. Market day is Friday, and pretty nearby towns host good markets on other days - especially Esperaza and Mirepoix.

The CARNIVAL of Limoux lasts from January to Easter, every weekend, and is becoming more and more popular each year. Many of the recent foreigners who have moved to the area have become regular visitors, enjoying this fascinating spectacle every weekend.

The ROMANESQUE ABBEYS are fascinating to visit, featuring the sculptures of the MAITRE DE CABESTANY. The numerous CATHAR castles - places of legend and wild beauty, and the CITE DE CARCASSONNE, make for a rich visits. The famous Pic de BUGARACH is 25 kilometers away, and can be climbed.

The MEDITERRENEAN beach is an hour away, as are the high mountains of the PYRENEES, with the ski slopes open in season. We have special interest in the very rich bird life, and are happy to share our knowledge. Jonathan often walks in the mountains, and is happy to provide advice as to beautiful walks to suit all abilities.

Other Activities: Visiting historical sites, gourmet eating, wine tasting, walking, bird watching, golf, skiing.

Golf: There is a golf course on the Limoux side of Carcassonne, le Domaine d'Auriac, less than 30 minutes drive away. It also has an excellent bistro, and the adjacent hotel has renowned up-market restaurant.

We often advise our guests to visit the prehistoric cave paintings at Niaux, in the Axe les Thermes valley in the Ariege. The 90 minute journey is worth it - these 14,000 year old paintings are some of the best in France, and you will come away with a another view of the presence of humanity on this planet.

Ski: We are in the foothills of the Pyrenees, and the nearest ski station is at Camurac. More sophisticated but also reached for a days' skiing are Les Angles, Axe les Thermes and even Andorra.

Notes: The house, which belonged to a nobleman, is set on the river bank on the 'quiet' side of town. A 5 minute walk along the water will take you to a bridge that crosses over to the main town, and the central square with its cafes and restaurants. All shops that you might need are available within walking distance, and good supermarkets are found 5 minutes drive away. The town's swimming pools are a short walk away. There are both indoor and outdoor pools, the outdoor pool with a grass sitting area around it, but we recommend to our guests to drive to one of the lovely lakes in the nearby hills, which are set-up for swimming access, and enjoy the freedom of swimming in the surroundings of forests and mountains. Next door to the town pool there are tennis courts, a Canoe/Kayack hire facility, a park and a children's play areas. There is off-road parking available behind the house, where your car can be safely parked. Living upstairs we are always on hand to advise and to help.

We stayed for a week in February and we couldn't have wished for a more comfortable and welcoming stay. The apartment is warm and cosy and has some lovely features which show Jonathan and Angele's skills as artists. We loved being able to walk into town within 2 minutes and having the view of the river right outside our bedroom window. All in all we would very much recommend it.

Riverside in Limoux! Wonderful!!!

Submitted: April 19, 2013 Stayed: March 2013
We cannot say enough about our Limoux "home" for the past month and our hosts, Jonathon and Angèle! We did not know this region of France and wanted a central location but not in a city. From the start, Jonathan answered all questions with patience and completeness. The process of booking, directions to find Limoux and Maison Lalii were comfortingly complete. Upon arrival, we were extremely pleased to meet Angèle and Jonathon. Maison Lalii is a beautiful, lovingly restored home on the bank of the Aude River....flowing just outside our bedroom window! Our view across the river to the spires of the medeival cathedral and Pont Vieux that goes to the main square of town... We walk along the river into town for coffee, pastry and bread...nearly each day. Our apartment in Maison Lalii does not disappoint ! We have a lovely fully equipped kitchen looking out to an indoor courtyard....flowers abundant in all pots!! Everything we have needed for our month long residence is here! Utilities are reliable and we have had no loss of anything as we have in other accommodation we have rented. The bathroom is well lighted, lovely large bathtub as well as separate shower... All linen needs provided. And, our bedroom is sooo comfortable! We sleep sooo well, waking up to the ducks on the river each morning!
Our hosts are so very interesting...they have shared so much information about Limoux, the region, local activities and so much more. Jonathon is an avid naturalist...we have enjoyed his knowledge of the river animals, the nature of the area...we look forward to coming back in a season to accompany him on a bird sighting adventure. Angèle is a beautiful artist.... We have thoroughly enjoyed living among her art in our apartment, not only on the walls, but her hand painted tiles, architectural pieces and furniture.... Truly feels personal and comfortable.
We recommend Maison Lalii to any visitor who wants to enjoy this region of France in a calm peaceful fashion. We are sad our stay is ending and know that we shall return!!!! Thank you Jonathon and Angèle for the pleasure of a home in Limoux.

Maison de Lali

Submitted: December 30, 2012 Stayed: December 2012
The description on the website certainly does justice to this comfortable and stunningly restored apartment. It has all the amenities that you could wish for and is exceptionally clean and well maintained. There are also some lovely touches provided by the owners themselves with some original art work by Angele and woodwork by Jonathan. The views onto the river from the Kingsfisher lounge are beautiful and overall it was a cosy and restful place to return to after our daily travels. We loved the big kitchen to sit around the table at night to chat over some local cheese and wine! Our gracious hosts gave us a wonderful warm welcome, nothing was too much trouble for them. Jonathan is very knowledgeable about the surrounding area, in particular for us about the wildlife in the region which we hope to pick up on our next visit.

The apartment is in a superb location. Limoux is a lovely french town with the restaurants, cafes and bars on the main square being the focal point. You can reach this by a short walk over the bridge from the apartment. It also has a good bakery and about 5 mins drive away is Le Clerc supermarket which is probably the best in the area. Limoux is great for sightseeing in the wider area. We would recommend: Rennes le Chateau, a steep drive up to the tiny village at the top with great views of Pyrenees and interesting church! (you go through the village of Couiza to get to it); Esperaza market on Sunday morning, in our opinon the best in the area; Quillan another lovely market town with a nice place to have a coffee by the river and a lovely restaurant called Le Galerie which does great meals at good prices; Rennes le Bains is a small spa town, tranquil and lovely to walk around and you can enjoy a nice leisurely lunch at the small restaurant under the plane trees in the square (in the warmer weather!); and the unique mediaeval city of Carcassonne, only 20 minutes away, which must not be missed but it can be particularly magical at Christmastime with the market stalls, ice skating rinks and twinkling lights. The location is also great for taking part in wine tasting of the splendid Limoux blanquette - a must!

We would highly recommend this apartment to both friends and family members and would definitely stay again ourselves.
Owner's Response: Thanks very much Damien for this good review. We'll put it up the top of our reviews!

This was our second time in Limoux staying at the Maison de Lali, our first time in the Kingfisher apartment. We had a fantastic stay, the apartment is very spacious and comfortable, with lots of interesting artwork and features. There is a comfortable living room area with satellite tv (including UK channels!) and DVD, and lots of windows looking onto the river and ducks below. The kitchen is really fantastic with a nice big table and chairs and beautiful finishings, and two great bathrooms. I can't really do it justice in words but it looks even better than in the pictures. We just love these apartments and this setting - for me there is nothing better than walking along the river bank to pick up the morning's treats from the boulangerie, then having breakfast on the lovely balcony. It is so peaceful and relaxing. Limoux is a fairly quiet town but has a number of nice restaurants and shops and it is in the middle of some really beautiful countryside, there is lots to see and do in the area (we ran out of time and were wishing we could have stayed another week). Limoux is very authentically French and not too touristy. Jonathan and Angele are fantastic hosts and will do all they can to ensure that you have a wonderful stay. We can't wait to get back there, hopefully next year!
