Welcome to Big Sur, the most beautiful place in the world
Big Sur Stone House is a fully sustainable ocean side home on the unspoiled Big Sur coast 62 miles south of Monterey, California. The gardens and grounds create a completely private and secure enclave above the Pacific Coast Highway. Sole access to the property is by private gated road. The forty-acre site occupies the center of a magnificent wide marine terrace with uninterrupted views of the central Pacific coast to each far horizon and is surrounded by the protected lands of the Los Padres National Forest.
You can hear the waves on the shore from the Master Bedroom and watch the surf from every room in the house.
The off-grid, two-bedroom stone-built home was designed by an architect who specialized in sustainable architecture for himself and his family. The house is built in two closely connected but separate wings for the maximum amount of quiet and privacy. Both wings have full direct views of the ocean. The Cottage Wing includes the kitchen, dining area, laundry, bedroom and full bath. The Studio Wing includes a large library and media room with a half bath, and the adjacent Master Bedroom and Master Bath with single spa tub.
A separate stone pavillion west of the Master Bedroom with a magnificent view of the ocean waves can be used for a private retreat or a larger indoor dining space for events. The grounds include a complete organic garden and orchard, satellite communication link, and fish ponds.
The house complex has a fully stocked library, including a complete collection of music CDs, phonograph records of many genres, an extensive DVD film collection, and a satellite dish for internet connection. The house has radiant floor heating throughout with tile and maple floors. The bathrooms and kitchen are served by both conventional and reverse osmosis water systems and have granite and onyx counter-tops. Hiking trails for the Los Padres National Forest begin at the entrance to the private driveway. The undeveloped beaches and coastal meadow of Pacific Valley below the house is an easy walk to the beach with a picnic lunch and a fine bottle of Pinot Noir. A popular public surfing beach, San Dollar State Beach, is 1.6 miles south of Big Sur Stone House and can be reached by walking, biking, or by car. Para-gliding the ocean thermals above the property is also a popular local sport.
Big Sur Stone House is 31 miles from the small shops and stores of Big Sur, the Post Ranch Inn, the Ventana Inn and Spa, and Nepenthe Restaurant. The house is 40 miles north from Cambria, California. It is approximately one and one half hours from Paso Robles Wine country (29.6 miles) ; three and half hours north of Santa Barbara (179 miles), and approximately four and a half hours north of Los Angeles (273 miles). Please e-mail or call for any questions.
Please, no agents. If you wish to book, please contact us directly. Having someone else act as your agent will often only add a layer of complication, delay, and expense to you. Because of the timely nature of booking a vacation rental several days of relaying communications back and forth between parties will raise the likelihood that the house would be booked by others not so encumbered.
C'est une villa magnifique, tres bien equipé avec un vue extraordinaire sur la mer. Le soir vous pourrez voir (avec un peu de chance) des chevreuils dasn la priorieté. Une des plus belles villas que j'ai pu louer. Prestation exceptionnelle. / This is a beautiful villa, very well equipped with an extraordinary view of the sea In the evening you can see (with a little luck) deer just near the house. One of the most beautiful villas that I could rent. Truly Exceptional.
It is really difficult to put into words how beautiful this place is.
I have stayed there several times over the past few years and am drawn back again and again.
Our whole family loves the place. My wife and two little boys think of it as our favorite place to get away from it all.
The house is lovely, and extremely comfortable. The grounds are wonderful and truly private. The views make you feel like you're in your own private kingdom.
I can't wait to get back.
This estate is truly a gem in the Big Sur hills with spectacular views of the Pacific. My wife and I combined a stay and our wedding/reception here and the experience was magical. The owners are warm and generous people, which made our time there even more special. I don't want to give away any details of this beautiful home and property as you just need to experience it to truly understand how wonderful of a getaway it really is. Highly recommended!!!
I can't even put into words how perfect our stay here was. We wanted to spend a few days "off the grid" and this was absolutely the perfect place for it -- literally and figuratively. If you want to remain dependent on your electronic devices on "vacation," look elsewhere; if you're committed to truly "getting away from it all," there is no better place to do it.* The entire home is self-sustaining, which alone is an incredible accomplishment. But to have this degree of luxury in an environmentally-friendly home is really incredible. (*I should note that, while we were offline during our stay, we were able to catch the Blackhawks games on DirecTV and we listened to an amazing assortment of music from their extensive collection.)
Driving up to the property, I couldn't even believe it was somewhere in that beautiful vista; it's completely secluded, although right off of PCH. Ana was so accommodating, the house was so clean and well stocked, and the view is... still just the thought of it is breathtaking. The sunsets, which you can even enjoy from the rooftop in addition to the gorgeous patio, are forever burned in my memory as some of the most beautiful I've even witnessed. You can see such an amazing breadth of ocean and mountains. And I have never seen that many stars in a night sky. The garden was overflowing with beautiful flowers and herbs. I even took a bath in the outdoor tub with fresh lavender picked from the bush right beside it while looking at the waves crashing into the rocks by the shore. One of the best experiences of my life! During our stay, we were visited repeatedly by a stalking but friendly tomcat, a pair of quail, countless other species of birds, and a doe that lingered about 50 feet away from us, grazing while we enjoyed the sunset.
We went to Julia Pfieiffer State Park and Sand Dollar Beach from the house - convenient and unbelievably beautiful.
The house is still a work in progress, so if you're the kind of person who will be dissatisfied with a few loose ends, go to a fancy resort instead. But if you are more interested in the beauty of nature and giving yourself the unwinding time so many of us need, the Big Sur Stone House could not be more appropriate. I can't imagine a more perfect getaway and I can't wait to go back!
My family and I have rented many homes and this home was the best one ever. The beauty of the location. The scenery. The comfort and decor of the home, everything. The owners have done a superb job in every aspect of a guest's needs from linens, video, audio and the fantastic and well stocked kitchen. The isolation is so calming yet the beaches and Pacific are right there. We did several incredible hikes, swam in mountain streams, swam in the Pacific with wetsuits, ate a great restaurants. Just being at the house is an event in itself. A++++. We spent 6 nights. We will be back.
My husband and I stayed at the Stone House Estate for two amazing nights during a recent vacation to celebrate his 50th birthday that took us to various Northern California locations. This property is situated on a beautiful estate with amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. The sunsets were absolutely amazing and my husband and I enjoyed hikes along the rocky beaches within walking distance from the estate. The home is well kept and offers everything you could possibly need. We could have easily stayed there longer but we were thankful for our 2 wonderful days/nights at Stone House. Ana was a real pleasure to work with and greeted us upon our arrival to make sure that we were well acquainted with the house. Thank you Ana for sharing your lovely home with us! We hope to visit again in the future!
The location, photos, and description are accurate- but pictures don't do this home justice. The home is clean, well-maintained, secluded, and it is clear that the homeowners have taken great care to reduce the home's impact on the environment (solar panels, composting, lots of natural light, excess water is rerouted to irrigation, etc). There is also a hiking trail right next to the house so you can also get a hike in during your stay. During our stay, we were able to see many animals on the property. Monarch butterflies and various bird species flew by, deer came down to the garden, and we even got to see a whale. The home owner is a wonderful and sweet person who is personally interested in her guests. When we arrived at the home, we received a warm reception and we were even greeted with fresh flowers, wine and chocolates! We had many questions about the location itself while planning our visit and we received timely, thorough, and detailed explanations each time. We would definitely recommend this location and can't wait to return. Thank you for making our stay so memorable!
