We spent our holidays exploring France for 12 years until we fell in love with La Rose des Vents on a rainy day in October. Here we could develop the type of luxury self catering holiday accommodation we were always searching for! So we took the plunge, gave up our busy careers in the NHS & National Grid and moved to this beautiful region.

Since then we have lavished care and attention renovating the properties to ensure our guests have a great holiday and along the way learned to speak french, made lots of friends, sampled numerous restaurants, were adopted by a litter of kittens - Honey, Lucy & Rosie, joined a couple of classic car clubs and explored the area in our Morgan sports cars - our other great love.

Lyn & Graham Peek purchased this house in 2004

We had visited this Region before and loved everything about it - the climate, relaxing lifestyle and people. We live in a small hamlet - no traffic noise - just birdsong and the occasional tractor. No light pollution - the stars are absolutely incredible and in summer guests enjoy a midnight swim whilst watching the meterorite showers! However, we are not isolated but ideally located. The bustling town of Cognac is just 15 mins drive away and Saintes & St Jean d'Angely close by. Even closer, at 5 minutes drive is the busy market town of Matha. In 45 mins we can be sitting on the beach, or for a fix of city life be in Bordeaux within an hour and a half. It is beautiful driving country on near deserted roads, through rolling vineyards and there is always something going on - street theatre, music festivals, firework displays, artisan markets and fetes.

Our home is over 200 years old and on that first visit we could see the potential. In addition to the Manor House, the former separate stables and an estate managers house are set discretely within 2.5 acres of beautiful gated grounds with views over the vineyards once owned by the previous owner.

Although we named them Rose & Manor Cottage, the fully renovated properties are now spacious houses with private gardens and courtyards offering complete privacy and the cottages are only one of three properties in this area (Val de Saintonge) to be awarded 4 stars by the French Tourist Office for their comfort, style and facilities.

We are constantly improving the facilities and services we offer, and in addition to offering B & B mini breaks outside high season,in 2012 we introduced the option of reserving a 3 or 4 course dinner on the day of arrival to be served by candlelight in the cottage, or under the stars in the garden.

Come and relax by the heated pool or explore this beautiful region - any queries, just ring the bell by the kitchen door, we are here to help and if you are interested, enjoy a complimentary ride through the vineyard in our 4 seater Morgans.

We stayed at Rose Cottage in August 2008. It was exactly as stated in the details and we were hugely impressed by the decor, cleanliness and facilities. The cottage is absolutely beautiful. Our two girls loved the pool and the fact that they could watch the British TV programmes they enjoy! We bought fresh croissants each morning and ate them in the beautiful secluded patio area. The supermarket in Martha is convenient and only 10 minutes away. The area is lovely to explore and Lynn and Graham are excellent and attentive hosts. We followed their recommendation to visit a brandy house in Cognac and also discovered a fantastic park there. It's only an hour to the coast and we also enjoyed our visit to Saintes ( good shopping !) We can truly recommend this gite as the perfect holiday resort and look forward to visiting again. You would need a car although there are interesting walks around the area. A week wasn't really long enough !

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. We like to think that both our cottages are of high quality but must point out that this lovely family actually stayed in Manor Cottage not Rose Cottage, and we look forward to welcoming them all back in the future.

Me,my husband and our one year old stayed at Manor Cottage and had a wonderful time. The cottage is comfortable and very well equipped with the bonus of UK television too. Our son especially enjoyed the brilliant pool and we used it every day. The cottage feels very secluded and private even thought the lovely owners are right there if you need any help, directions or recommendations of places to visit.
We had the option of dinner on the first night and found it really tasty and an absolute lifeline after a long days driving. My husband also loved his trip out in the Morgan.
All in all we had a great time and Lyn and Graham were brilliant hosts, even making sure the sun shone every day for us!

A wonderful place to stay, so relaxing a real home from home. We had a lovely holiday at Manor cottage. Lynn and Graham are the perfect hosts and are always on hand for help and information. They take great pride in the cottages and this really shows as they feel like well cared for homes rather than holiday lets.
We had a great welcome pack, and lots of local information in the cottage. The cottage was absolutely spotless, we have never stayed in cleaner accommodation. The cottage is very comfortable and well equipped it has everything you could possibly need in a holiday cottage.

We were on holiday with our two boys. The weather was not great - which is very unusual at this time of year. However, we found fun activities for every day.
We all enjoyed the pool, it was perfect. Heated, clean not a leaf of insect insight and just the right depth (around 1.4 meters, if I remember correctly). We could swim and it was not too deep for the kids. All this and you are surrounded by beautiful gardens.

All this and a ride in the Morgan!
Thank you Lynn and Graham - sorry it’s taken me so long to write the review. We will back again soon.

The Manor Cottage was wonderful, warm, immaculate and homey. We recommend you stay here when in the area. Lyn and Graham were perfect hosts!! Lyn brought us whatever we wanted for breakfast every morning, fresh croissants, juice, yogurt and fresh fruit. She offered to fix eggs and bacon, whatever we wanted.

They gave us directions and recommendations for the area as they are well versed in what there is to do there.

The garden is just gorgeous and so peaceful.

If you're looking for the best of both worlds; places to visit during the day and privacy and comfort in the evening this is the place to be!

Owner's Response: We are very happy that Kathy & Ray had such a good time with us. Exploring France, they only had time to stay with us for 5 days and booked our new mini break option, which is proving very popular.

More than just a self catering holiday, it includes tea and cakes on arrival, breakfast delivered to your cottage each morning, a welcome aperitif and 4 course dinner with wine, coffee & cognac, served on your first night, in the Manor House, plus a complimentary tour round the vineyards in our 4 seater Morgan Sports cars.

For guests staying a short time, we supply a welcome folder brimming with ideas of places to visit and the best restaurants to try, and we are on site to answer any queries or make any reservations for our guests.

Thank you Kathy for your kind comments, and we hope to see you again.

Beautiful cottage, very clean and superbly well equipped. Ideal for classic car owners who are unable to carry very much luggage.Lyn and Graham are very friendly, helpful and willing to give advice and tips on great places to visit and guidance on excellent restaurants. The duck menu at Chateau Mesnac should not be missed!
This was our second visit and once again we had a great time.
The pool area is lovely, ideal for a relaxing afternoon.
We would thoroughly recommend staying in the cottage to anyone wishing to explore the Cognac region.Ideal for cognac tasting too at several of the cognac houses in the area.
We will certainly be staying again in the future.

The cottage is sympathetically restored to a very high standard. We loved the interior living spaces and the bedrooms were the best we have experienced on holiday. The property was well equiped and clean. The children (12&9) loved the outdoor space and swimming pool.

The overall property, including the grounds, had a lovely peaceful feel and the owners, Lyn and Graham, managed to be friendly and helpful without being obtrusive. The sharing of the grounds and pool with the owners and the family in the other cottage worked very well. It was fun mixing with everyone, but the other cottage is just far enough away, the other side of the grounds.

The property is ideally situated for visiting Cognac, Royan, Sainte and Angouleme. Maritime Charente is a very beautiful part of France and perfect for family holidays.

We would recommend this holiday to anyone.
