There is snow in the Park at higher elevations and the wildflowers are in full bloom! Built in 2005, this charming home is located on 15 acres in the Dunlap foothills, amongst a beautiful oak woodland. Skylights in the kitchen and living room give you a bright, cheerful atmosphere. The master bedroom has a queen bed and a soothing, romantic rose and green garden décor. The second bedroom, the Woodland room, has a full bed, and the third bedroom, the Bluebird room, has a full bed.
Linens and towels are provided. The kitchen is fully equipped. The picture windows in the living room, frame a vista view of the Central Valley cities, the coastal mountains at sunset and a breathtaking sight at night, of the stars and Milky Way with the city lights twinkling below. On the fourth of July, we watch the fireworks from afar, in over 5 different cities! This is the place to sit and bring your binoculars or telescope, to view the night stars.
In your front yard, a picnic table with umbrella gives you a vista view for breakfast. Along the side of the house there is a shade shelter with a large picnic table and a charcoal barbeque under the oaks, redbuds and elderberries overlooking the deer trail.
Roads and trails meander amongst the 15 acres, revealing lovely, shady spots with granite boulders, to sit upon, in restful contemplation. A horseshoe pit and lasso golf game area has been added just below the home.
Foothill bird watching offers a host of different species not found in the city, these include California quail, turkey vultures, red-tail hawks, acorn woodpeckers and various towhees, are just a few of the daily visitors. Deer and rabbits usually stop by to nibble the flowers.
Located 15 minutes away are the Twins restaurant and in the town of Squaw Valley: Hummingbird Breakfast Deli, Bear Mountain Pizza, two small mini food marts; two gas stations, a library, feed store, hardware store, and car repair garage. Squaw Valley hosts a variety of small, country events such as a Mule Show in May, Garden Tours in the summer, a rodeo in May and various other festivals such as the Turkey Testicle festival and a Crafts and Art Fair in October. The Endangered Cat Haven, housing and breeding endangered wild cats, and Rosemary’s Herb Garden, offer unusual tours in this unique foothill habitat. We're also 8 miles from St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Ranch
Located 30 minutes away for water lovers, Pine Flat Dam with water-skiing, fishing, boating and swimming is a refreshing stop. We have even enjoyed sailing on the lake in our small 19 feet O’Day sailboat.
Avocado Lake, near Pine Flat, is a small lake, perfect for children to wade in and practice their swimming. The Kings River flows in this same area and offers more fishing holes and picnicking along its banks. Spend the afternoon golfing at the Sherwood Forest Golf Club. There are wine tasting tours and a fruit trail along the Blossom Trail as well.
Located 30 minutes away is Kings Canyon National Park, (URL link provided below) breathtaking in its views of the great Continental Divide and many of the oldest redwoods in California, including the largest living tree, General Sherman. . Our rental fees are 50 percent less than staying in the hotels there, so you can enjoy the park and then come to your own comfortable home in the foothills. Special December event: December 10th; the Nation's Christmas Tree Service: email us for details. (Cross-country skiing in the winter)
Located 45 minutes to 60 minutes away is Sequoia National Forest, the other half of our Kings Canyon Park. In the summer, you can travel up through Kings Canyon Park, into Sequoia National Park. In the winter you have to go around through Visalia and Three Rivers, to reach the Sequoia Park.
Cities nearby include Visalia, Fresno, and Tulare, all with their own special spots and events to explore. We will fill you in on those special restaurants, antique shops, a great zoo, parks and many other fun events in these cities.
It is our pleasure to offer this unique foothill experience for you. We love and care about this area and look forward to providing a restful, memorable vacation. Come and see for yourself why this area is so dear to us.
Photos don't do this cottage and amazing view justice. The drive up is amazing, but once you get to the cottage the view is breathtaking. We arrived with our 3 kids, nephew, and fur baby and were greeted by Elaine shortly after. She showed us around and made us feel welcomed. You will be delighted to know that this cottage really is home away from home. You have everything you could possibly need - besides food, which you can bring from home to have breakfast, bbq's, lunch, coffee...just like home. There is a trail that leads back around to the cottage, but is well worth the walk. Our kids absolutely loved it! The view of the stars at night is stunning, since it feels like you can literally grab the stars out of the sky. Cottage was roomy and the home was clean and well stocked with games, movies, and books - everything you could want for entertainment. This property is a must-see. You definitely won't regret staying here. We will be back soon.
We stayed here on our trip to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Beautiful house and location !
The house was fully equipped with everything we needed. The owners were very prompt and helpful ! The house had lot of board games for us to play. The kitchen was fully equipped. The heaters were nest controlled -- so kool :)
I think the pictures don't do full justice to the comfort of house and beauty of the place around :)
We saw milkyway and shooting stars on one of the nights -- courtesy the amazing location of the house ! Such an amazing experience !
The house offers everything as promised in the description !
Thanks Elaine / Kimon for being a great host ! Would totally stay here again on my future trips to Kings Canyon / Sequoia.
Beautiful home in the mountains, as exactly as described. Make sure you take the time to watch out the window of the blue bedroom. There is a bird bath that the rabbits will come down to visit. We enjoyed watching the larger rabbit with the spot out of his left ear. Lots of birds to watch. Stars are amazing if you enjoy the night star! We saw a few falling stars. Easy access to both parks. Make sure you stop for groceries before arriving at the property.
This lovely home was an amazing find for my family and me. I have two daughters who are 11 and 14. They both loved the hikes, sitting and watching the view, bird watching, and star gazing. This home is very private and affords you, the renter, the opportunity to enjoy peace and quiet while still being within 35 minutes of the entrance to King's Canyon National Park. You simply cannot go wrong! The owners are incredibly accommodating and offer suggestions for places to go but also provide a great deal of privacy. They were next door but you would hardly know it! If you are looking to rent a house in the mountains, enjoy some solace but still visit some extraordinary scenery then this is the place to do it! And you can't beat the reasonable price. Go for it - you will not regret it!
This property is quiet, private, and very nicely appointed - just what my wife and I were looking for near the Big Stump entrance to Sequoia National Park. The park entrance is only a 25 minute drive, which made coming and going each day a very reasonable trip.
We were greeted by the owners upon our arrival, who live just down the dead-end street. They were happy to tell us everything we wanted to know about the surrounding area and shared their recommendations for our time in the parks. Sunsets are beautiful from the front porch, and if you ask them to switch off the lamp post for your stay, you can see an incredible number of stars on a clear night.
If we ever go back to Sequoia/King's Canyon, we will absolutely stay at Starry Oaks!
I'm not one who enjoys writing reviews... but this house is amazing! It's not a huge house, but it's spotless and well organized. In the house, there is a folder which catalogs pretty much everything (scissors, towels, etc.)!!! It made our lives so much easier, as we didn't have to spend half an hour looking for a can opener... Also, the house has everything you would ever need. You really just need to bring yourselves and some food.
The owner is super nice as well. She seemed generous and accomodating. We arrived before the check-in time, but she was very nice about it. She does live next door, but you don't have to worry about her being nosy. She is not intrusive at all, and the two houses are so far away from each other that you can hardly call it "next door."
The outdoor seating area is also beautiful. We spent hours just sitting outside, grilling BBQ, playing music and stargazing.
The only downside, I would say, is the drive to the national park. The roads are very curvy, which makes the ~30 min drive quite tiring... but it's something you probably can't avoid regardless of where you stay. :(
Anyway, it's a great place to stay overall. Would definitely stay again!
