Photos and Description of the Marathon vacation house rental
4 bedrooms, 3 baths, sleeps 10

TRULY ONE OF A KIND, FABULOUS WATERFRONT PROPERTY - 4 BR/3BA - 3 BR/2BA home plus an attached 1 bedroom/1bath cottage. Includes your own wonderfully secluded private salt water tidal lagoon with fish, lobster, and all sorts of plants, seaweed and aquatic life !

Come relax in this very private and peaceful amazing water front property on the Gulf, with fantastic views of the water from the living room, dining room, kitchen, and screened porch. Boat dock for boats to 40 feet. Parking for your trailer and extra vehicles on adjacent lot. Four Kayaks for your enjoyment. PLR2011-00266.

The House: The main house includes 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Two master bedrooms provide a much needed respite from the busy life that you have come to the Keys to escape from. The private master bedroom and bath are located on one side of the living room, and the remaining 2 bedrooms and bathroom are accessed from the opposite side of the living room. The second spacious master bedroom and bath is attached to the main house, separated by a car port for additional privacy. The kitchen is open and comfortable to cook in with stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops, stainless steel range, dishwasher, and a large picture window with pass through to the large, enclosed patio. This gulf front home comes with all the amenities you would need or want, including a generous flat screen HD television in the living room, an outdoor gas grill, cable television and high speed wireless internet.

The Property: Easing out to the backyard through the expansive French doors, you will find a very coveted, one of a kind private 13 to 15 foot deep saltwater tidal lagoon, where you can snorkel and swim in the privacy of your own backyard. Please do not intimidate or catch the fish and lobster, they are our pets. Or you can relax on the generous screened porch, as you watch the kaleidoscope of colors dancing in the magnificent sunsets. The 50 foot dock will accommodate most boats, or jump off the end of the dock for a swim or snorkel in the gulf. 4 Kayaks are available for your enjoyment. Paddle on out to the deserted island for an adventure. An additional lot separates the house from the other houses on the street and can be used for parking your boat trailer, or extra vehicles. An abundance of landscape lighting around the backyard provides an amazing ambiance at night for a private swim in the lagoon.

The lagoon: There is no other body of water like this in the Keys. If you are familar with the TV show 'Flipper', you might be amused to learn that the dolphin Flipper once swam in our lagoon. The lagoon is a healthy aquatic habitat, which is healthy for your skin; unlike a chlorinated body of water such as a swimming pool. Chlorine is toxic to plants and fish, and also to humans. Because the lagoon is not treated with any chemicals (which would harm the fish and plant life) and is connected to the gulf via an aqueduct, the visibility and conditions in the lagoon are dependent on the conditions in the gulf. As the gulf water warms, the warm water provides more nutrients for plant life and plants become more abundant. Since lobsters eat plants and algae, expect to see more lobster off the dock by the jetty to the south, when the water warms. Be sure to get your lobster license though, if you wish to savor the taste of these delicate creatures. Fines are steep for poaching. Please do NOT catch the lobsters in the lagoon, as they are our pets, and help control the plant life. With a small aqueduct connecting the lagoon to the gulf, the water level will rise and lower about 2 feet with the changing tide, when the ocean ebbs and flows. Come with your mask and snorkel and adventurous attitude as you explore the marvels of the lagoon and the gulf. If you are squeamish about walking in the gulf or lagoon, remember to bring your water shoes ! If you desire a pristine, sandy beach, rather than an aquatic habitat, the renowned Sombrero beach is about one mile from the property. Of course, there will be no privacy, and you will have to compete with all the other tourists that have no access to water from their property. The water depth in the gulf by the dock varies from about 4 feet to 6 feet. If you venture out to the bay, the water level may be as shallow as 1 foot or as deep as 10 feet. Life jackets are provided.

We hope you enjoy your stay. And please, call us immediately when you arrive, if everything is not to your satisfaction.

We were two families of 3 (2 moms, 2 dads, and 2 girls 8 and 10) vacationing together.

When we stepped into this fabulous house we breathed a sigh of relief. We had just driven down from Orlando after 3 hectic days of theme parks and had stayed in an "adequate" rental.

The house is easy to find and private, yet very close to every amenity you need. The photos really don't do it justice. It was very clean and Lynne and Mark were available and close by if we needed them (we didn't). The kitchen had everything we could need or want and we did cook most of our meals at home.

Just an FYI for anyone that's interested; the king bedroom and the twin queen room share a bathroom and the single queen room has its own ensuite. We didn't have a problem with this, just information.

We visited the Dolphin Rescue Center about 15 minutes drive north, where the girls got into the water to meet a dolphin ($120 each). They were sooo excited!

We drove down to Key West. It's a little over an hour drive and I recommend the burger at Schooners. I'm glad we went in the off-season, I hear it can be crazy.

We were going to rent a boat but that darn Hurricane Sandy left the water too choppy for most of our week. Luckily for us, the huge tide-pool stayed calm and provided a safe haven for swimming and even kayaking! It was murky due to the high winds, but very swimmable. Bring your snorkel and mask.

Other than the windy days, the weather was lovely and warm. The screened patio is great place to hang out in the evening to play cards or just sit around and chat, margaritas in hand (the blender in the kitchen is very good for making margaritas!).

We would recommend this home and we would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Owner's Response: You are very resourceful, kayaking in the lagoon when the Gulf was too windy ! Two or three strokes in the kayak and you'd be to the other side of the lagoon, one would think. It is obvious you all had a great attitude, making the most of the high winds. We are thankful you were able to enjoy the lagoon and that the hurricane stayed off shore. Other guests have visited the dolphin center to swim with the Dolphins and remarked that it was the highlight of their children's trip. This is on our bucket list for our children. We look forward to your return visit next time you visit the Keys !

We had a wonderful time swimming, kayaking and watching the sunset at this beautiful home. The house was exactly as described though the living room sofa was a bit creaky :-). We all loved the huge coffee table that looked like a ships door! Lots of fish and lobster in the lagoon and the kids had a great time swimming with them.
The location is great and close to anything you need. Definitely lots of things to do nearby and the house was easy to locate and access. Will definitely stay again.
Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your experience with our future guests !! We are pleased that you enjoyed swimming with our pet lobsters and fish. We too love the coffee table, although at one point I tried to talk my husband into replacing it with a smaller size. I am thankful that I listen to him on occasion :). You are correct, it was a door in its earlier life. In just a few short months, we will be replacing the existing sofa with a new, bigger, even more comfortable sofa which you will be able to enjoy during your return visit. We recommend booking early for next year. After purchasing this property last July, we are beginning to get repeat customers booking a year in advance !!

Great Family Vacation

5 of 5
Submitted: July 31, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
The house was great and the accommodations were exactly as described. The owners were very informative and answered all questions. For boating it was in a great location being located between the 7-mile bridge and Vaca cut which allowed for easy access to the Atlantic. The dock can easily handle two 22ft boats but a fish cleaning station would be nice. The close proximity to grocery and restaurants is very nice. Breakfast is definately" The Stuffed Pig". I would definately recommend this property to my friends and family.
Owner's Response: David - thank you so much for taking the time to share your positive experience with others !! I've heard of the "The Stuffed Pig" and will have to try them for breakfast during my next visit in the Keys. A fish cleaning station will be installed this fall for when you come back next summer :).

Definite do-over...loved it :D

We had an incredible week and would definitely stay here again. The house was spacious and well equipped. The best part was the location. We really enjoyed sitting out by the water in the morning and watching the dolphins swim by. There was a school of parrot fish one morning. There was virtually no boat traffic to contend with...some boats going out in the morning and returning in the evening. It felt like we had the bay to ourselves and we had a blast wake boarding, skiing, kneeboarding and tubing. We have a small boat so we really liked that those not heading out could watch them while hanging out on the dock. We all liked jumping off the dock, swimming and snorkeling around. The previous renters left a gigantic raft which we tied to the dock and had a ton of fun playing on. We kayaked around and fished every day. In the evening we used up our bait feeding the fish in the tide pool. There is a huge variety of fish in there. A large conch and three lobsters came close to shore each evening. We spent a half day at the Dolphin research center and would recommend that. It was our first time there although we've been to the keys over 20 times...would definitely repeat that trip. We took the Spirit charter out to Sombrero and really liked the catamaran. We could sit on the rope net on the bow right over the water. It was really fun. Everything was clean and really nice. If you want to avoid idling through canals this is the place for you and its only a short run to vaca cut.
Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your wonderful experiences !! We are so thankful you are enjoying our recently acquired Paradise location, and that you took such good care of the home. We too love that the property is in the middle of Marathon and within walking distance to grocery stores, restaurants, clothing stores, the post office, sandal outlets, and organic shops to name a few. Yet, once you step into the house or walk around to the sandy lagoon entrance in the back, you are transformed to Paradise, with your own private cove, lagoon, and sandy play area complete with a Palapa for shade !! I didn't know what a Palapa was, but learned it is the grass covered mini-hut near the waters edge of the property. We look forward to your return !!
