Overview

Marathon House Rental Photos and Description

4 bedrooms, 3 baths, sleeps 10

TRULY ONE OF A KIND, FABULOUS WATERFRONT PROPERTY - 4 BR/3BA - 3 BR/2BA home plus an attached 1 bedroom/1bath cottage. Includes your own wonderfully secluded private salt water tidal lagoon with fish, lobster, and all sorts of plants, and aquatic life !

New swimming pool with infinity edge and poolside Tiki hut just added December 2014. Heating and Chilling available.

Come relax in this very private and peaceful amazing water front property on the Gulf, with fantastic views of the water from the living room, dining room, kitchen, and screened porch. Boat dock for boats to 40 feet. Parking for your trailer and extra vehicles on adjacent lot. Four Kayaks for your enjoyment. PLR2011-00266.

The House: The main house includes 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Two master bedrooms provide a much needed respite from the busy life that you have come to the Keys to escape from. The private master bedroom and bath are located on one side of the living room, and the remaining 2 bedrooms and bathroom are accessed from the opposite side of the living room. The second spacious master bedroom and bath is attached to the main house, separated by a car port for additional privacy. The kitchen is open and comfortable to cook in with stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops, stainless steel range, dishwasher, and a large picture window with pass through to the large, enclosed patio. This gulf front home comes with all the amenities you would need or want, including a generous flat screen HD television in the living room, an outdoor gas grill, cable television and high speed wireless internet.

The Property: Easing out to the backyard through the expansive French doors, you will find a very coveted, one of a kind private 13 to 15 foot deep saltwater tidal lagoon, where you can snorkel and swim in the privacy of your own backyard. Please do not intimidate or catch the fish and lobster, they are our pets. Or you can relax on the generous screened porch, as you watch the kaleidoscope of colors dancing in the magnificent sunsets. The 50 foot dock will accommodate most boats, or jump off the end of the dock for a swim or snorkel in the gulf. 4 Kayaks are available for your enjoyment. Paddle on out to the deserted island for an adventure. An additional lot separates the house from the other houses on the street and can be used for parking your boat trailer, or extra vehicles. An abundance of landscape lighting around the backyard provides an amazing ambiance at night for a private swim in the lagoon.

The lagoon: There is no other body of water like this in the Keys. If you are familar with the TV show 'Flipper', you might be amused to learn that the dolphin Flipper once swam in our lagoon. The lagoon is a healthy aquatic habitat, which is healthy for your skin; unlike a chlorinated body of water such as a swimming pool. Chlorine is toxic to plants and fish, and also to humans. Because the lagoon is not treated with any chemicals (which would harm the fish and plant life) and is connected to the gulf via an aqueduct, the visibility and conditions in the lagoon are dependent on the conditions in the gulf. As the gulf water warms, the warm water provides more nutrients for plant life and plants become more abundant. Since lobsters eat plants and algae, expect to see more lobster off the dock by the jetty to the south, when the water warms. Be sure to get your lobster license though, if you wish to savor the taste of these delicate creatures. Fines are steep for poaching. Please do NOT catch the lobsters in the lagoon, as they are our pets, and help control the plant life. With a small aqueduct connecting the lagoon to the gulf, the water level will rise and lower about 2 feet with the changing tide, when the ocean ebbs and flows. Come with your mask and snorkel and adventurous attitude as you explore the marvels of the lagoon and the gulf. If you are squeamish about walking in the gulf or lagoon, remember to bring your water shoes ! If you desire a pristine, sandy beach, rather than an aquatic habitat, the renowned Sombrero beach is about one mile from the property. Of course, there will be no privacy, and you will have to compete with all the other tourists that have no access to water from their property. The water depth in the gulf by the dock varies from about 4 feet to 6 feet. If you venture out to the bay, the water level may be as shallow as 3 foot or as deep as 10 feet. Life jackets are provided.

We hope you enjoy your stay. And please, call us immediately when you arrive, if everything is not to your satisfaction.

Excellent owner

  • 5 of 5

This review is to give the owner Mark 5 stars as a great person to deal with. He promptly replied to our initial inquiry, provided all information needed, and gave us great customer service. Unfortunately, our planned stay did not go off as planned due to difficulties on our end, but we're very much looking forward to the opportunity to stay at this beautiful home in the future.

Love this place

  • 5 of 5

We have been vacationing in the Keys at least once a year for several years now. This property was perfect for our family. Marathon is centrally located in the Keys and makes it easy to get anywhere you want to go. The property itself is well maintained and spacious with all the amenities you want in a vacation home and then some. The new infinity pool was a pleasant surprise and a wonderful addition. Our nine year old loved the private beach at the lagoon. The view is spectacular any time of the day. I can't say enough good things about this place.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking such good care of our property, and for sharing your opinion with others. We strive to create an environment where wonderful vacation memories can happen and with the addition of the infinity pool, we can now accommodate not only the beach goer (our own private beach), the ocean kayaker (kayaks provided), the marine lover (marine animals in our lagoon), the deep sea diver (well, the lagoon only goes to 15 feet but that is considered "deep sea" by some :), and the olympic athlete (pool length 100 feet for laps), but also the "sit and read a book by the pool" guest :).

Fun place for family celebration!

  • 4 of 5

We were pleased to find the property clean and roomy as the pictures portrayed! Our family of 6 adults/3 teens/1 preteen loved the large rooms and kitchen--we spent lots of time on the porch with family games, or coffee and conversation. The kayaks, fishing gear and snorkeling gear provided were perfect for our water lovers and the tiki hut with comfortable chairs were great for late evening "gatherings". Our adults and kids loved kayaking, both in pool and out to the island. Fun for all! Also, loved having those beach towels available for family who flew, very convenient plus! We found our beds very comfortable and were pleased with quality of linens and towels We found grocery store, ice cream shop and many small local places with good food "Stuffed Pig", "Lulus"and "Sunset Grill" just a few of the many restaurants located nearby that we enjoyed. Our family also enjoyed going out on a boat to snorkel, this was also nearby and enjoyed lunch at "Porky's" adjacent to the boat launch. We spent two days in Key West and found it to be fun and educational as well. Some preferred the busyness of Key West and some of us enjoyed the quietness of Marathon much more--however, we all enjoyed each day to the fullest. Thank you for sharing your home with us, your response to our inquiries was prompt and we would recommend to others and would come again, next time in a cooler part of the year!

Owner's Response: Sunset Grill is one of my favorites too. There are so many great restaurants in the Marathon Area, and Key West. We are delighted you enjoyed the kayaks. As you discovered, the property is located in a fairly protected coastline area, with Rachel Island only a stones through, or 10 minute kayak trip, away. I love that the Keys have so much variety. We enjoy Marathon so much, we have not yet ventured much to the other Keys, but hope to do so in the Fall. We will keep you posted if we find any new "hot spots."

Definitely an outstanding home-away home.

  • 5 of 5

I would like to thank Mark and Lynn for sharing this outstanding home with our family. We have visited Marathon Key before and was impressed with the previous rentals. However, this property definitely provided our family a very comfortable home to stay. Specifically, we loved the large and private backyard/dock/tiki hut where we spent every morning enjoying our coffees and every sunset in the afternoon. The tidal pool is huge (much bigger than the picture shown) and we enjoyed snorkeling in it.

The dock is just perfect for us since we rented 27-ft boat and it's so easy to doc. We also enjoyed the three kayaks provided by the home and rented the paddle board from the shop at the corner of the street. They delivered to right to our door.

The inside of the house is just outstanding. The kitchen is very updated and roomy for us to prepare our drinks and meals. We loved the coffee maker and blender. The cooking utensils are of good quality.

The new refrigerator worked really well for us since it gives us plenty of room for drinks and water bottles.

The A/C worked extremely well considering the weather in middle of July.

The only two items which I hope that the owners will keep an eye on for future renters:

1. Bath towels - there is only one set to use and it should be carefully cleaned (and replace when they are wore out). We ended up buying our own towels.

2. Water pressure in the main bathroom is quite weak. My family rented two other houses in the area (same week) and the water pressure are much stronger in their units.

I would definitely stay here (and recommend to others) again since it is one of the best properties in Marathon.

Thank you Mark and Lynn again for sharing their home with us.

Owner's Response: Snorkeling in the lagoon is one of our guests favorite past times, as well as enjoying the sunsets from the Tiki hut. We will look into the bath towels, as we had 15 new towels the beginning of June. And no one has mentioned the water pressure before, so we will investigate this. We appreciate your suggestions and are glad you enjoyed your stay in Paradise, which will be even more enjoyable with the addition of a swimming pool this fall.

Adventure, Relaxation or Both

  • 5 of 5

Yours is the choice at this beautiful haven on the bay. Centrally located, Marathon is the best spot in the keys. This house is right in the middle yet offers seclusion a gorgeous view. Fun abounded for all 11 members of my family. We practiced our snorkeling skills in the lagoon, swam in the lagoon, kayaked all over the bay (even out to the island), fished from the dock, and had fun just watching the wildlife. The younger kids even practiced their kayaking skills in the lagoon and I saw signs of a soccer tournament in the cul-de-sac. The water is crystal clear in the bay and if you watch closely at sunset on the dock you’ll see lights in the water from the jelly fish. We snorkeled with Hall’s Dive Shop (best in the keys), boated around Islamarada, checked out the local beaches, found my sister’s life calling at the Turtle Hospital, visited Key West, walked the 7 mile bridge and enjoyed lots of seafood. Burdines has the best seafood and Keys Fisheries has the best Key Lime pie. Pictures do not do the house or property justice. Lynne and Mark were awesome to rent from and had the deposit back to me within the week.
