Vacation at Heron Cove
Heron Cove is a modern two-bedroom main house with full bath and separate new guest house with own full bath, located on Ten Mile Lakes in Lakeside, Oregon. Take in the breathtaking views from every room, barbecue on the decks, relax down at the newly-constructed carpeted Cedar Boathouse, kayak around the lake, rent a boat at nearby marina, or simply enjoy the natural beauty of Oregon and let bald eagles, osprey, otters, trout and newts entertain you. The house features a splendid master suite with vaulted ceilings and 8-foot high windows that occupies the entire second floor, as well as separate kids' bedroom, kitchen with full appliances, separate laundry room. Newly-built cabin is right next door.
Ten Mile Lakes
Ten Mile Lakes is one of Oregon's largest and most popular recreation lakes. Fishing is superb year round. Come catch large mouth bass, trout, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. Ten Mile Creek, which feeds into the ocean, provides great steelhead fishing in the spring and fall. With all the fish that abound, you’re also sure to see lots of birds, maybe even an eagle if you are lucky. If fishing isn't your thing there are large open areas on the lake that are perfect for all types of watercraft sports including: boating, jet skiing, canoeing, and kayaking.
Lakeside is located on the Oregon coast about midway between North Bend and Reedspord, three miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, sheltered from onshore winds by the Oregon National Dunes. Average temperatures in the 60s to 70s in the summer and 50s in the winter. The drive from Eugene is just under two hours. Visitors primarily come to Lakeside for outdoor activities associated with Ten Mile Lakes and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, which include waterskiing, jet skiing, beachcombing, camping, fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, scuba diving, dune riding, wind surfing, horseback riding, swimming, picnicking, and sightseeing.
In addition to the master suite, the main house offers a second bedroom with a twin/full bunkbed, perfect for the kids. A third bedroom, with a full-sized bed and private bathroom is located adjacent the main house in a newly built separate cabin. The main house living room has a full sized futon couch, dining table, fully furnished kitchen, washer/dryer, VCR, house and beach towels. The new cedar boathouse is carpeted with tables, chairs, and propane stove.
Note: As stated below, Heron Cove requires a minimum THREE-NIGHT STAY and--to ensure to quietude of neighbors and protect septic system--there is an ABSOLUTE LIMIT OF SIX GUESTS AT ALL TIMES, which can be monitored.
Note2: Heron Cove is located six miles from Lakeside, the last two along well-maintained gravel road. There is little turnaround at the house, so trailers of all kinds should be left at Sunlake Marina (1/4 mile away). During winter months, the fairly steep driveway makes all-wheel-drive a plus, though you can also park along road. Please be advised that the walkway from house down to the boat house might be rigorous for retirees (ramp and twenty steps).

We are an active family from Eugene, Oregon. Mia is a faculty member at the University of Oregon and Michael is a writer. Our two girls are in elementary school.
michael welch purchased this house in 2010
We wanted a place where we could relax, bring friends, be astounded by the natural beauty of Oregon, and watch our kids grow. Two recent favorite memories: watching an eagle fly by while we were down at the boathouse sipping our morning coffee, and watching the kids march back down to the lake to go swimming for the gazillionth time that day. Pure bliss.
Watching eagle, osprey, and heron in their natural habitat, playing with newts and other water critters. Going for a kayak. The house is very peaceful and a wonderful place to unwind.
We came off season so I was worried about cold and wet but the house could not be more inviting! And with a roaring cast metal fire, it was cozy beyond words. The drive up was like driving through a rainforest, with a winding road that seemed to go on forever. The owner's directions were spot on, but as he recommended, getting there in daylight is a must. I packed enough food for us to stay put during our stay and I'm glad I did. Once in this cozy home I did not want to leave for more than a walk. The kids had a blast taking the kayaks out and the boathouse was a relaxing place for me to sketch and them to try and fish. They are desperate to come back in the summer so they can swim and play on the trampoline. No wifi was fantastic: as a family we played cards and board games (there is a variety of games in the cabin). The view is amazing and the set up in the cabin is perfect for a small family: big refrigerator, fresh water spigot, plenty of dishes and pots and pans. The only thing I would recommend to the owner is two comfortable chairs instead of one in the bedroom: it would have been nice to sit comfortably with my husband and share the view. There is also a separate double bedroom with bathroom in the front of the house which we didn't use because we all wanted to be together, but useful to know if you are a larger group or if you just want to get away during the day for a quiet nap. Comfortable, clean, cozy and cute!
I cannot begin to express what a fabulous time we had during our week stay! After a rather stressful year of change and being over extended, we all soaked in the beauty and relaxation of your gorgeous and thoughtfully considered home. We were in, on, and around the water daily: paddling in the kayaks and canoe provided, jumping, fishing, swimming, diving (how we loved the diving board!). Your boat house is amazing, and we spent much time there---and of course cavorting on the fun station! My husband Ken spent hours every day casting (a metaphor for the throwing away of stress!) and he proudly provided us with a delicious dinner from the lake. We saw abundant wildlife including an otter, actively fishing osprey and countless heron, and quite enjoyed the challenge of trying to catch the elusive frogs. Your home has absolutely everything one could hope for.....and more. We felt so at home---loved your music and movie selection, loved the open and serene master bedroom, loved the colorful accents throughout your home, loved your selection of games. The guest cottage worked perfectly for my son and his girlfriend. The folks at the marina were very kind...we rented a boat one day to explore the whole lake. Your arm of the lake is by far the most protected and lovely!
My whole family baked in our time unplugged together at your place....so much fun and connection!
Thank you thank you! We will be back!
Our family of five (two teenagers and an almost teenager) just spent 3 great nights at this house to purposely re-connect as a family after six months where we were not all at the same place. We wanted something just for us to be together, play games, and have fun. And we needed the kids to value that, too. Overall, it could not have been a better time.
What really makes this house nice is the boat house that includes all kinds of non-motorized watercraft to use, and has a "living room" where you can hang out all day overlooking the lake and be sheltered if a wind or rain comes along. Almost no motorboats came by over the three days (it was August), which was great. The setting is beautiful with great blue herons and bald eagles both spotted (the eagles we saw in March when we came previously). A morning fog on the lake is a magical time to kayak or canoe as well.
The house and guest house fit us fine, although we tend to not be too picky. The master bedroom is an open floor loft overlooking the lake. A small room with bunk beds worked fine and the guest house slept two of our kids. Two bathrooms are nice as well. We cooked just fine, played lots of games, and just enjoyed each other - everything we wanted.
As for the ramp and steps from the house to the boathouse, it is a bit of a workout, but not a big deal. The lake's elevation can vary by 12' over the year, so I suppose there are times of the year when it isn't as steep. But that must explain why all houses are up on a hill; the nice thing about this house is that the boathouse actually has a comfortable hang out spot rather than just being a garage for boats.
We had a great time and have already recommended it to several friends.
Dealing with the owner, Michael, was easy and expedient. The property was explained adequately on VRBO. Four adults and two kids spent six days. It is a good thing we didn't all get there at once as the cleaning lady didn't finish cleaning until 7:00 p.m. (4:00 check in). When we arrived we felt like we were guests in someone's home; their personal clothes, cupboard food, refrigerator food, and bathroom items were in the various cupboards, drawers, or on one of the four clothes hangers. We moved the the owners' stuff to the side and tried to make the stay convenient for us. There were few places to put our clothes and supplies--we lived out of our bags and boxes for the week. The kitchen was adequately supplied except for oven cook ware; we borrowed from the cleaning lady (who was very helpful). There were burned out lights in the living room and few places to sit. Bath towels looked a bit dirty with holes in some.
The water tastes and smells terrible. It was suggested we bring our own drinking water and were glad we did.
The boat house on the water with diving board and the white water kayaks were the best features of our vacation there. We loved being on/in the water, but were disappointed that the water was (typically) brown. The 85 steps up to the main house got old. We spent a lot of time down below and a few of us even slept there. Without the boat house, there would be no reason to stay there (and it would be a 1-star).
It was a great area in which to vacation with the dunes and ocean close by.
The price is quite high for what turned out to be an average house.
Our family of six (teens and pre-teens) had an excellent stay at Heron Cove. First, lack of cell and Internet service was exactly what our family needed to unplug and enjoy our vacation in Oregon. It's a plus rather than a negative!
Second, close access to the Dunes was great! We enjoyed a day on ATVS then lunch at Don's Main Street Restaurant (great pie! ).
Third, the boathouse was where we wanted to be....kayaks, canoe, swimming, diving, fishing, so much to do in a very quiet and peaceful spot on the lake.
Great views, fun outdoor activities, comfortable place to rest and relax..... one of the best vacations we've had!
Michael was great to work with and very helpful.
We stayed at this property during the last week of June 2014. The lake and surrounding area was so quiet and peaceful that we felt we had the lake to ourselves. It was sunny during the first half of the week and we had a blast hanging out in the boathouse which really is the gem of this property. We thought the water might be cold but it was very pleasant for swimming. It was great to have access to the kayaks and canoe in order to explore the lake, and the water trampoline was fun just to sun bathe on. The second half of the week it rained on and off (a fine Oregon mist at times) but we still enjoyed sitting down at the boathouse and playing games or reading.
The house was very clean when we arrived and the extra large refrigerator was a bonus since we had planned to stay put for a full week. The owner was very accommodating and helpful. He had recommended that we arrive before dark as the address was a little challenging to find - good suggestion! We had 3 generations with us so the separate guest room/bathroom next door was perfect for Grandma. The second bedroom in the house was a bit small for our two teenagers so one slept out on the futon in the living room. We really liked that this property was pet friendly. They have 2 separate gates that kept our small dog enclosed (and the neighbor's dog out) which was much appreciated. If you are looking for a beautiful and secluded location, then this is the property for you!
